Heavy rain on Red Friday

Happy Red Friday bloggers,

It is going to be a soggy morning for Red Friday.  Ryan Kath, one of our NBC Action News reporters is outside getting soggy supporting the effort this morning.  There is a band of enhanced lift moving slowly across our local area this morning.  Rainfall rates will be 1 to 2 inches per hour in the heavier rain bands.  A FLOOD WATCH has been issued by the National Weather Service for today as the creeks, rivers, and streams may not be able to handle these rainfall rates and amounts causing some of them to overflow.  We are in the tropical stream from what is left of Tropical Storm Lowell.   Look below at the 5:45 AM satellite picture (Image shack isn't working this morning, so I had to have the pictures hosted from a different source, if you can't see the pictures I will try to load them in a different way later this morning)

Hurricane Ike did strenthen a bit overnight, and it is forecast to become a category 3 hurricane before it makes landfall tonight or Saturday morning.  Ike may still turn our way.  Look a the GFS forecast from the 06z run overnight.  This is valid at 1 AM Saturday night:

Ike is going to get picked up and ejected out sometime Saturday night or Sunday.  Most models took Ike a bit closer to us on Sunday, than their previous runs.  We will be analyzing this closely as a farther northwest track could bring us a wet Chiefs Sunday.  Meteorologist Jeremy Nelson will be tracking the latest model trend on our Midday newscast at 11 AM this morning, and I will try to get the blog updated later on.  I am Emcee of the Cancer Action Volunteer Awards banquet today at noon, so I will try to update the blog around 3:30 PM today.

So, if Ike comes our way, how much more rain? I got 1.5 inches last night in La Cygne. Making a 2.5 inches total so far.

Roof is still leaking too. Guess I'm gonna have to pay another roofing to come in and fix it. These guys can't get it right!!! WHat is the worst is it was fixed prior to the new roof being put on and now I get to start all over again trying to figure out why it is leaking.

Thanks for the total.  Sounds like you need to get some video of your roof leaking and contact our Call For Action department.  Maybe they could help you or lead you in the right direction.

Farmgirl, I just got my roof and gutters replaced and I have my fingers crossed there are no leaks. I know how you feel. I worried about my roof and gutters for some time when I knew they were bad. So far so good with the new roof.  We shouldn't worry about a new roof leaking, right?  It does seem ridiculous, but I will feel better when this passes and the house remains dry. I would take Jeremy's advice and notify the BBB if the roofer doesnt come through for you.  Good luck!

If the next two model runs continue the farther west projection on Ike's path I will buy into it.  For me still here in North Texas, what this farther west track would mean is a greater threat for flooding and stronger winds from Ike, if it verifies.  Just when I was beginning to relax.  NWS has issued a Tropical Storm Wind Warning for Saturday starting 1 county south of my current location and south from there.  Here we are under a Tropical Storm Wind Watch.

From the radar it looks like it's going to be a very wet Friday in KC, with the heaviest rain still to your west but headed your way.  I heard a report on the Weather Channel this morning that Highway 50 was closed either near or in Sedalia due to high water, is that true?

That is funny.  At the old house I had 2 old fashioned rain gauges.  One in the garden and one on the deck.  In big rains like this they would differ by as much as a .25 inch.  I have no clue why other than maybe it's because they are $2 rain gauges made in China and perhaps they weren't made right.

Does the latest GFS run continue to show Ike's center tracking farther to the west on Sat. than earlier runs?  So far NWS and NHC have not adjusted the track westward, or have they?  Does the western trough appear to be splitting into two pieces, with the southern piece staying farther west, and if that's the case could that cause Ike to initially move farther west before recurving?

****************

The NAM has us on the edge or just missing the rain from Ike.  The GFS is still much farther west-northwest and gives us some rain Sunday.  Still probably not an all day rain.  I'm guessing the right solution is somewhere in between.  Hopefully the rain stays away for the Chiefs game.

Nastyweather...I am glad the Galveston mayor "changed her mind."  I think the advisory that anyone staying in Galveston Island or any of the other barriers would face certain death kinda shocks you into reality.....

And Dr. Masters from Weatherunderground just stated that the storm surge from Ike could rival Katrina's and be one of the most damaging hurricanes of all time.

He stated, "Ike continues to grow larger and has intensified slightly since yesterday, and the hurricane's Integrated Kinetic Energy has increased from 134 to 149 Terajoules. This is 30% higher than Katrina's total energy at landfall. All this extra energy has gone into piling up a vast storm surge that will probably be higher than anything in recorded history along the Texas coast. Storm surge heights of 20-25 feet are possible from Galveston northwards to the Louisiana border."

Higher than anything in recorded history along Texas Coast???

Wow!!!  As I said a few weeks ago.  People along the coasts need to worry about the Storm Surge.  A 25 foot storm surge would drown countless people who would decide to stay along the barriers...flooding which comes from the storm surge kills more people than any of the wind events that are part of a Hurricane...

mmancubfan said:

Didn't catch this either from Masters...

"We can expect Ike to cause the largest and longest-lived power outage in Texas history, with power knocked out along a 200-mile wide swath in eastern Texas and extreme western Louisiana extending 300 miles inland to I-20. Dallas will be at the fringe of the region of widespread power outages, and should not suffer major power failures."

And the whole Houston metro area should experience Hurricane force winds for EIGHT HOURS....WOW!!!!

Yeah mmancubfan, Ike may go down as one of the most devastating Category 2 hurricane of all time, especially if it makes landfall at the SW end of Galveston Island and sweeps across Houston as currently predicted.  Its large size and the fact that it's been able to build its storm surge across the entire length of the Gulf will be bad.  Anyone whose judgment would lead them to remain on a barrier island along the Upper Texas Coast to ride this out gets my nomination for a Darwin Award.

mmancubfan said:

I must grimly agree with you Sedsinkc...

If this cane goes up the SW end of the island, south of the city just like you said, the storm surge will probably overtop the Galveston sea wall which is 17 feet tall.  That would flood the CITY of Galveston...not just the island.   And they haven't even evacuated the Galveston jail yet in the city..... And it looks like Port Arthur, TX is going to see a 15-20 foot surge which will overtop their sea wall by six feet flooding the entire city.  Masters also noted that will also cause flooding of the major oil refineries which are numerous in Port Arthur area.

I think the media seems to think that since it isn't hitting New Orleans it isn't as big a news event.  I haven't seen Masters doom and gloom so close to a landfall since the day before Katrina....

This could be alot more catastrophic than people think....

Just think, if all the refineries in Port Arthur and around Galveston Bay are flooded and put out of commission for weeks by this hurricane, gas might go to $5 a gallon or higher nationwide.  That's grim too.  Let's hope every last person on Galveston Island gets off now before it's too late.  A recent ob from Galveston had winds there already gusting around 35 mph.  The city of Galveston is built on Galveston Island, and the eastern end of the island where the city is located is protected by the 17 foot seawall.  Let's hope it's enough tonight.  The west end of the island has no seawall and was devastated in 1983 by Alicia's storm surge of "only" 7 to 9 feet.

NOT pleased with Ike.  I hoped if I ignored tracking it, it would go away.  I feared this.  Heck, I remember watching Ike develop before he was named and even then during Gus, noting not to take eyes of Ike developing thousands of miles away.

I am already to that point of reconsiliation between the awe of the storm and the impending human tragedy.

I pray for those impacted.  I hope Pvt and I can sit back and debate and laugh about the overhyping of this storm later.

Right now, I am not sure we will have that conversation.

As far as rain here...tough forecast.  I am throwing all the models out and just going with sat/radar and other composite indicies at this point.  The GFS has suffered as of late, can't stand the NAM..and think due to the near range of the rain, I can make better decision based on data other than model.

For sure it is wet..and cool..and I see every indication [IMO] that the rest of the season [fall/winter] will be this way.

It would suck if the basement flooded! It did a little in I think 06. It was not a problem on the unfinished part of the basement (like I said a little flooding) but the finished part got the carpet wet. Talk about stinking! I finally had to call someone in to take care of it. Now we have a large model railroad layout on top of the carpet on the finished side of the basement. We can't just lift the carpet and put a fan under it to dry it out like we did last time. I am going to keep my fingers crossed that my basement does not flood along with anyone elses! One change we have made to the outside of the house since the last flood is we bought and put on drain spout extenders to move the water as far from the basement as we can. So far the sump pump is pretty quiet, so that's good!

Weatherfreak01, I too put 7 to 10 foot drain spouts on all the gutters to keep as much water away from the foundation as possible. Only problem is I live on very flat land the and the yard is starting to pool. The water from the road way will probably flow over the driveway again and wash it out even though we put a new larger culvert in the spring. This year has been rediculous for rain fall!!

I hope your basement stays dry. Well see what happens with mine as it has a few issues waiting to be repaired in October. I have spent over $18,000 repairing a 10 year-old house from the rain, wind and hail this year. I guess I should watch the money pit movie since that is what I have. :) I put a roasting pan in the attic to catch the dripping water. Had to go to work, so hope it doesn't over-flow.

They are not that bad so far (though I have not gone into the garage yet today!). When they blew more insulation into the attic the company said that they did not see any evidence that the roof over the house was leaking yet. Question for you though farmgirl.. Why do you keep going to different companies to get your roof fixed? Why not make the company that re did your roof fix it since that is what you paid them the big bucks to do in the first place? They should fix it for free since they are the ones who did a poor job. I agree with Jeremy, you should think about calling the call for action news department. I am hearing about too many roofing companies who leave their customers with leaking roofs. Somebody needs to call them to task!

I called my roofer repair man- he only fixes roofs and doesn't replace. I want him to tell me what is wrong with the roofing around the dormer. I can see lots of nails sticking through the roofing boards too. That doesn't seem right to me either.

Sigh - Hubby picked this company. I wanted to use the one we used when we got hit with a F0 twister in 2006. But they were a higher on the bid, I'd rather pay for a good job than a half-done job. Hard to find workers who take pride in the work they do.

So here I am crawling through a hole in the dormer wall on the inside of the office closet with a roasting pan. Size is about 2.5 feet wide and 3 feet tall in the shape of a trapazoid. Can't gain weight or I'll get stuck!! :)

Something for your guys to think about regarding the storm surges and the sea wall in Galveston.  When they first built the sea wall they built it at 17 feet.  However, that was years ago and now they are worried that after years and years of build up there is only 8-10 feet actually above sand.  This would make a 20 foot surge even more devastating.  I lived in Galveston for a very short period of time and this was something tossed around back then; now it seems it is a very legitimate concern.

even though i admit the storm surge will be bad in spots, i am not overly excited about ike.  his pressure continues to rise, and is looking more and more ragged as time goes on.  peak surface wind gust was only 93mph, and the pressure is that of a weak cat 2 storm.  the shear size of ike is impressive, but its not a balanced storm.  certainly not a 'perfect' storm.  its just unfortunate its heading to such a susceptible area...where even the surge of a cat 1 would cause damage.  i hope for their safety down there, but i am upset at the doomsday approach being taken, but if it works to get people out, it works.  i am still mad that we are going to be paying for it through gas price hikes though.  when its all said and done, the devastation wont be nearly as acute as they are predicting(thankfully) especially inland...this thing is going to lose its punch quickly once the eyewall comes ashore...lots of rain inland though.

Checking some tidal observations along the upper Texas and Louisiana coasts, the tides are currently running 5 to 7 feet above normal, about 10-12 hours +- until landfall.  Ferry service from Galveston Island has been suspended and Texas DPS will likely close the causeway from Galveston to the mainland very shortly, if they haven't closed it already.

In current satellite photos, it looks like deep convection is wrapping completely around the eye of Ike.  Although Ike may not strengthen before landfall, this envelopment of the eye by deep convection on all sides will likely keep the storm from weakening much before landfall.

pvt_murphy,
You say Ike is weakening, yet the T.V. says it look like it is strengthing a little bit. The eye is starting to get a little more pronounced. The T.V. is also saying that the winds are 105 not 93 like you are saying. Mostly they are saying that the main threat is storm surge. Ike is still over 100 miles away and things are already starting to flood. The mayor of Houston has talked about evacuations. What Alby21 said is very interesting and makes sense. I heard that they built the sea wall after a 1900 hurricane and they did build it at 17 feet. It makes sense that through the years it has reduced in height due to sand, etc. On the T.V. they talked about the wind as an after thought, it is all about the storm surge.

Posted by the NWS this afternoon..
THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR NORTHWEST...NORTH CENTRAL
AND WEST CENTRAL MISSOURI...AS WELL AS EXTREME EASTERN KANSAS.

.DAY ONE...THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT

THE POTENTIAL FOR HEAVY RAINFALL WILL CONTINUE ACROSS THE OUTLOOK
AREA THROUGH TONIGHT. ONE TO THREE INCHES OF RAIN HAVE ALREADY
FALLEN ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE OUTLOOK AREA WITH AN ADDITIONAL ONE TO
TWO INCHES POSSIBLE THROUGH TONIGHT. THIS WILL LEAD TO THE POSSIBILITY OF
FLASH FLOODING AS WELL AS RISES ON AREA RIVERS WITH RIVER FLOODING
LIKELY. THE MOST LIKELY AREA TO EXPERIENCE HEAVY RAINFALL THROUGH
TONIGHT WILL BE ALONG AND NORTH OF A KANSAS CITY TO MACON LINE.

OTHERWISE...AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE HAS DEVELOPED ACROSS SOUTH CENTRAL
KANSAS TODAY AND WILL MOVE NORTHEAST ACROSS NORTHWEST MISSOURI THIS
AFTERNOON. ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE THROUGH TONIGHT
AHEAD OF THIS FEATURE. WHILE OVERALL INSTABILITY WILL REMAIN
QUESTIONABLE...SUFFICIENT SHEAR AND COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF LOW LEVEL
MOISTURE WILL MAKE ISOLATED TORNADOES A POSSIBILITY WITHIN THE
STRONGER STORMS...MAINLY ALONG AND SOUTH OF A KANSAS CITY TO MACON LINE.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY

HEAVY RAINFALL WILL LIKELY BE ONGOING ACROSS PORTIONS OF NORTHERN
MISSOURI BY SATURDAY MORNING. AS A COLD FRONT MOVES ACROSS THE
OUTLOOK AREA ON SATURDAY...ADDITIONAL RAINFALL AND ISOLATED
THUNDERSTORMS ARE LIKELY. THE STORMS ARE NOT EXPECTED TO BE
SEVERE...BUT AN ADDITIONAL INCH OF RAINFALL IS POSSIBLE.

FOR SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY...THE FUTURE REMNANTS OF HURRICANE IKE
WILL MOVE THROUGH NORTHWESTERN ARKANSAS INTO SOUTHEASTERN MISSOURI.
THIS TRACK MAY PRODUCE ADDITIONAL HEAVY RAINFALL OF 1 TO 2 INCHES
FOR AREAS GENERALLY SOUTH OF A LINE FROM KANSAS CITY TO MOBERLY.

pvt - the peak surface gust of 93 mph is a bit light right now.  I am assuming you are getting this from the drop/HH reports...

Here is a buoy in the path that has something a bit different...and a bit more current...

http://www.wunderground.com/MAR/buoy/42361.html

105MPH at 968mb

[though looking at the last four readings..the instrumentation may be broken now]

Rare humor from Notes, though spousal abuse probably isn't the funniest thing.

I have a link I am dying to post here for you hurricane junkes, but likely would have it pulled as it is for other network stations.

For those that know where Master's blog is...it can be found there.

Current obs for Beaumont, TX has winds gusting to 51mph.  Galveston is not updating their current obs.  I've been watching the radar loop and am wondering if Ike will make landfall east of Galveston, or whether it's just the eye wobbling a bit more to the north right now....

Closer to KC, looks like scattered thunderstorms are developing and increasing in number and intensity near the front to your southwest.  From their direction of movement, Kansas City looks to get hit with more heavy rain from these storms in the next couple of hours.

Good afternoon from wet and soggy Grandview.

Have been watching the progress of Hurricane Ike throughout the day from work.  Due to the communication ckt's that this storm is going to bring down, I will be a very busy person tommorrow at work.  Of course there's not much I can really do if the sites are (1) underwater and (2) no power....

The current rainfall for Grandview is sitting at 2.90 inches.
