Tornado Picture...Heavy Rain Continues...Ike Roars Ashore!....UPDATE

Watch NBC Action News HD this weekend from 8-9 a.m. and at 5 & 10 p.m. for the latest on the weekend rain chances!

****Added some forecast rain totals for tonight to the paragraph about Ike****

The past two days has provided some wild weather across the area.  Lots of rain and even some tornado touchdowns.  Let's start with a picture from Douglas County courtesy of Ron Bishop of a tornado that caused damage about 1/2 mile west of the Douglas and Johnson county line late Friday afternoon.  The tornado was near 458 road.  Overall I saw 11 reports of tornadoes across the viewing area.  When the NWS concludes its damage surveys I'd expect there were a few multiple reports.

The other main concern has been flash flooding as a tropical airmass has been established across the area and has resulted in torrential rains in many locations.  I will compile a complete list of 3 day rain totals later today.  So please send along your rain totals once again!  If you are still seeing rain in your backyard just send your total in around 3 p.m. today.  Here is the radar estimate from early Saturday.  Parts of the area have now received over 5" of rain.  The graphic that we showed for days leading up to this event showed 3-5"+ over the metro and it looks like that has already happened.

Hurricane Ike roared ashore overnight as likely a strong category 2 hurricane.  Ike was just 1 mph away from being a category 3 hurricane.  So more or less this was a major hurricane!  Ike made landfall at Galveston, TX at about 2:10 a.m. CDT on Saturday.  Winds were measured around 100 mph in Galveston.  The devastion will be widespread and the pictures will likely be heartbreaking once the sun rises on Saturday.

The effects of Ike will begin to impact our viewing area tonight and early Sunday.  The best chance of seeing heavy rain from Ike will be southeast of Kansas City.  Areas like Sedalia, Clinton, Marshall, and Warrensburg stand the best chance of seeing rain, possibly heavy with totals around 1.50"-3.00"+.  Here in the metro the northern extent of Ike could bring a few additional showers overnight and early Sunday.  Some of the rain could be steady or a period of heavy rain cannot be ruled out.  Totals in the metro will vary quite a bit but could range from 0.25" to over 1".  Best chance of 1" or more would be in southeast areas of the metro.  Right now the GFS has Ike a little farther north than the NAM.  I'll split the difference and keep a small chance of rain in the early Sunday forecast for KC.  Here is a look at the GFS 6Z rainfall forecast for the overnight period (1-7 a.m.).

Right now if you are heading to the Chiefs game I think it is dry at kickoff(although the seats may still be wet!).  Temperatures will be in the 60s and it will be windy with gusts around 25 mph.

Sunshine finally returns to the area with improved weather conditions by Monday!

Make sure to watch NBC Action Weather Plus for LIVE updates from Houston/Galveston on the effects of Ike.  Also, watch NBC Action News HD for the latest on the weekend forecast.  Thank you to everyone who stopped by the blog during this stormy period to give us rain totals and storm reports.  This is what makes this the best blog around...you!

5.33" here in western shawnee k-7 & johnson drive!  Amazing.  My backyard is literally a swamp, so much that I expected an alligator to emerge up onto my porch when I went out to get the rainfall total!

Also -- about Ike, yes it is definately a powerful hurricane, but it is what it is -- a category 2.  Hopefully Gary will not hype future hurricane's like he has for Ike and Gustov -- saying "they could turn into a cat 4 or 5".  Sure, any hurricane could do that, but depending on weather conditions, they may or may not.  Ike had NO chance ever of becoming a cat 5, and a 10% chance tops to be a cat 4 earlier in the week.  Lets leave the hyping of hurricanes for the other stations and the national media.  Do what YOU do best, predict the weather for the KC area more accurately for the past 5+ years than anyone else.

Thanks,
Tim ******************** Tim, The NHC also put chances on Ike becoming a category 5 hurricane. And at many times in the Gulf were forecasting it to become a category 4 hurricane. To say it had no chance in my opinion is wrong even though the chances were small. Jeremy

Tim, Ike was a Cat 4 for quite an extended period of time when it demolished the Turks and the Eastern end of Cuba.  And while Ike technically hit as a category 2 it is going to be some of the worse flooding the Houston Galveston area has ever seen.  So I'm not real sure what's overhyped.

Doug, Gary made his comments after Ike left Cuba and was back over the gulf waters.  He said it on TV and on the blog that Ike could be a cat 5.  It was NEVER close to becoming a cat 5.  And to your other point, of course the storm surge is bad, it is bad for every hurricane.  When was the last time you heard someone say about a hurricane "well, the good news about this hurricane is that there is little to no storm surge" -- of course, you never hear that.  A Cat 5 would have had 50+ mph faster winds and more of a storm surge.  Also keep in mind Ike went ashore at high tide, which made the storm surge greater, anyways.  I hope that everyone is ok in the houston/galveston area and damage is at a minimum, but things could have been a LOT worse.

Good Morning Jeremy!

What a wild week here at 130th and State Avenue in Western Wyandotte County! Monday Sept 8 brought a very storm thunderstorm overnight and we received 3.24 inches of rainfall. One Thursday Sept 11 we only received .33 and I was a little worried about not getting that much more rainfall based on radar trends. BOY WAS I WRONG! Friday night brought a brief weak tornado touchdown at 130th and State Avenue that damaged tree tops near Sandstone Amphitheater . We had leaves falling from the sky for about 15 mins. Never seen anything like it before. So for Thursday through this morning we have received 4.57 inches of rainfall. Now if you want a weekly total Monday through today that would bring us to 7.81!

Jeremy,

After Ike passed over Cuba, the greatest chance the NHC gave Ike to become a Cat 5 was 2%, and 14% to become a Cat 4.  Those are very, VERY low odds.  All i'm trying to say is that for the 90-95% of the people that use the TV weatherman for their EXCLUSIVE source of weather / hurricane information, it was made to seem that Ike's chances of developing into a 4 or 5 was MUCH greater than it actually was.  Every weathercast during the week I heard "Ike could become a cat 4 or 5", when there was an 85%-90% chance that it wasn't going to happen. ****************** But the 10-15% chance and the fact that the NHC did forecast the storm to become a category 4 certainly justifies mentioning a possible 4 or 5. I don't think Gary mentioned that it would make landfall at a 4 or 5 though. You should ask him when he blogs on Monday. Jeremy

I for one am glad that we don't appear to be getting multiple inches of rain this weekend here in Lee's Summit! I have a couple of questions though, one of which could be a life saver in the future. Question one.. When my weather radio went off for the tornado warning here in Lee's Summit, I turned on the radio part and all I got was static. It has never done that before and it was fine later on, no problems. Does that mean that a tornado was near me and was interrupting the signal? Also was anyone else in the Lee's Summit area watching NBC on the T.V. while hiding in the basement and have the screen go blue and then a phantom voice say that people in Grandview and Lee's Summit areas should seek shelter immediatley.. Was that the Emergency Broadcast system? I have never experienced anything like that before. Please forgive my questions as I am not a native Midwesterner.

Tim in Shawnee ... Your number are off on the NHC's Cat predictions for Ike. In the final wind probability update on Wednesday — well after the storm had entered the Gulf — the 48-hour estimates, which at that point roughly equates to landfall, were 27 percent for a Cat 4 and 4 percent for a Cat 5. (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/archive/2008/al09/al092008.wndprb.039.shtml?) Now, to their credit, those numbers shrank a great deal on the first update on Thursday (down to 10 and 1 percent, respectively), but as late as Wednesday night there was still at least some thought that Ike could strengthen to a 4.

I guess it all comes down to how you define "hype." Is merely mentioning the fact that Ike could have reach Cat 4 or 5 status amount to hype? In my mind, it doesn't. I don't remember every weathercast word for word, but I have no memory of Gary every going overboard with talk of a 4 or 5 at landfall. My memory is of discussion about track, wind speed, surge projections — all factual — and mentions of possibilities that it could strengthen to that level — at that point, also factual. I don't remember him focusing on that possibility at the expense of the facts or the more probable storm forecasts. So in my mind, no hype from Gary on Ike.

Just for Tim's benefit, I did find these comments on the earlier blogs. Is this hype or just mentioning it here and on the air? I guess it will be subjective depending on who wants to interpret it how. But it WAS mentioned so Tim was not really wrong. And I still am annoyed about hearing about it at all while there were possible touchdowns around the Kansas side. Sirens went off even after it was said on air that Johnson County was no longer under a waning. I was on the phone with a friend and heard his sirens go off not 2 minutes after that statement was made. Ya gotta wonder what the heck someone is seeing when they're told they're out of the woods and then get slammed with heavy wind, very heavy rain, thunder and sirens going off. When the sirens were going off before that there was no rain and just a slight breeze. Just my venting but about 2 or 3 weeks ago there was no warning for a severe TS and I drove home in nickle size hail and got the warning  5 minutes AFTER I got home to western WyCo. Very frustrating lately.

Weatherfreak01 where are you originally from?  A tornado doesn't interrupt a radio signal and would have nothing to do with your radio broadcasting static.  Heh, I imagine if the tornado hit the broadcasting station it might knock out the radio signal, but that's something entirely different from it preventing you from getting a signal.  I'd suggest the signal was down for some unknown reason.  It happens sometimes.

The emergency broadcast system is activated in case of emergencies.  I've never seen it done here in Kansas City because I have satellite.  However, when I lived in Lincoln, Nebraska the television would occasionally emit a horrific screech during a tornado warning.  The screen would go maroon and some voice would come on stating that people in Lancaster County should take cover immediately.  Sorry, it wasn't the voice of God.  :)

Have a nice weekend.

I also Dont get the EAS because I have Dish Network.

However In KC Area. We would get like a Nuke waste green with the Horriffic Tone that frightened me as a kid with some speech saying either This is a test or NWS has issued a Tornado warning for Johnson County Ks.

It was Scary yesterday after seeing a Wall and Funnel clouds while I was coaching Jr High football for the Sirens to go off. I thought that the wall cloud which was 4 blocks away had but down a tornado in Olathe.

Guess not. But Oh well. Great freakin time last night with that

More rain is in the forecast tonight for some...KC will have showers and some steady rain.  Heaviest downpours will stay south and southeast of the metro.  I'll talk totals on the newscast.

Hi Zazel,
To answer your question, my family and I moved here from smoggy Southern California. The most excitment we had there was where the brush fire was burning today, weither or not the beach was closed due to sewage being spilled, who shot who over what and if we could actually see more than a 1/4 mile without haze from smog ruining the view.
Thank you for answering my questions. When the T.V. screen when blue and the phantom voice told us to seek shelter immediatly, there was no screech before the voice like there is for the EBC tests. As a matter of fact, the voice was kind of quiet (at least compared to my 13 year old).
That is wierd about the radio going to static though. It did say on the screen why it was going off, just the NOAA radio part was static. Like I said before, it was fine later. I had been watching the news and tracking things on the web before we got our warning so I was not surprised when our warning came. I was already moving the birds into the basement when the radio went off. The puppies are easy to get into the basement, you just tell them, "go to bed" and off they run, birds are not as easy to train. And they have a heck of a time picking up their cages and carrying them down stairs. :-)

SPRINGHILLNEWS,
Can I ask you which channel you were listening to on your scanner? Or if it was more than one channel, can I please have the channel numbers? I have a scanner that I use to listen to trains (we like trains too). Knowing the address to program in would be helpful. Thanks.

Momof3, sorry I wasn't trying to be rude. I was just frustrated. I agreed with Tim and I was posting comments regarding the comments of Ike being a 4 or 5. But about the last two times there has been severe weather in my area there have been either no warnings or late warnings. You know, when people are scared or concerned and trying to figure out what's happening around them it's nice to have someone explaining it to them. Like I said, when the severe TS hit and I was suddenly getting pelted with nickle sized hail I asked a friend to check the stations for warnings and there was NONE. About 5 -10 minutes after I got home there was a warning for a severe TS in Dotte, which by that time had passed over. There were several of us leaving to go home when it hit and we were all going different directions and it was scary.
Yesterday I'm driving home, all I get on the radio is tornado warning from the NWS but not where in the county. I'm trying to decide do I try to find a store to hide in or try to go home? Then on TV I'm hearing about Ike on every channel and my sirens are going on and off for an hour or so. My friend in JoCo gets the word he's in th all clear and gets slammed with a heavy TS.
So I'm sorry if I came across as rude but you know, some of us get real concerned about what is happening, we aren't chasers or meterologists, and we want to know what's going on.

I noticed a secondary spin at the eastern side of Hurricane Ike as it came ashore in Texas, much like how a second tornado forms as the original one dies . . . is this something new or is it a common happening?  Thanks!

Weatherfreak01 -

Actually I am a ham radio operator and was monitoring Johnson County Emergency Communication  Services (http://skynet.entz.net/webpages/shorty/k0ecs/).  During storm activity listen in on 145.470 MHz.  Also Skywarn is located on 146.820 MHz (http://kcskywarn.org/).

What you will hear are trained wx spotters verifying or denying what radar is indicating.  This way Pleasant Hill NWS stays abreast of what is happening out in the field.

Enjoy.
