Saturday Night Rain....Rain Totals

Get your day started right by watch NBC Action News HD Sunday morning from 8-9 a.m.!

A large area of rain continues to stream north in association with Tropical Storm(soon to be depression) Ike.  As mentioned in the last blog the heaviest rain tonight will reside southeast of the metro.  But more rain will overspread the city and add to our already impressive rain totals.  Many locations have seen a months worth of rain in just 3 days!  What an exciting late summer with 4 tropical systems impacting our weather...Dolly, Gustav, Lowell, and Ike.

I just checked out the latest Powercast for tonight and typed in a couple of specific cities/locations.  Here is the rainfall forecast for a few spots.

KCI: 0.25"

Olathe: 0.66"

Lee's Summit: 1.00"

Locations farther south and east can expect more rain with totals of 1-3"+ being common.  Maybe a few spots see 4" totals.  Personally I'm ready for this rain to be done!  Especially after seeing 3 day rain totals like the one's below!  Once again a huge thank you to everyone how took the time to post your totals.  These are a little out of order..

Rain will taper early on Sunday and it still looks good for the Chiefs opener.  Windy and cool, but dry.  Please send in final rain totals if you receive more rain tonight sometime on Sunday and I will try to update the list so everyone can see how their tota compared to others.

Just a quick note...as the sun was setting this evening the sky turned to an orange blaze in some locations.  I think the right combination of the sun dropping below the cloud deck, some light rain falling, and the lingering volcanic ash in the atmosphere provided a spectacular sight.  I received some pictures of the sunset and will try to get one of these pictures posted by Sunday morning.  Also a great shot of a double rainbow in Leavenworth from Saturday evening!

Stay dry and I hope everyone's sump pump has been working!

As of 845pm my total now is just at 6" since this monsoon began Thursday.  What did I feel as I checked the gauge?  More rain drops.  Here we go again!!!!!!

I have over 6" in the rain gauge, very close to KCI. Radar est. precip dosen't show this much, but my sump pump is saying it may be true. New construction house, moved here a little over a yr. ago, and the sump has never had water in it until now. Also, looks like IKE is throwing some lift and moisture our way. Had a nice little shower pass over recently. Oh well, I dont believe I will be watering anymore this year. YEA!!!

Absolutely beautiful sunset with the orange glow and double rainbow.  We could see the entire rainbow from end to end from our house.  So since 2 major hurricanes have ripped up the Gulf of Mexico does this lesson any chance soon of the gulf current rebuilding there to sustain growth of any storms there in the next month?

It was an incredible sunset tonight. It seems as though if this was partly cloudy in the west in the desert a cowboy could be finishing a movie if it covered the entire sky. So far 5.06" at Johnson County Executive Airport.

That big ol yellow blob radar doesn't look like it is moving NE. More of a NW movement. So I would guess that I'll see close to 1.5 to 2 inches in La Cygne. NWS says I'll only get 1/4 inch. I find that funny since up until now they were forecasting 1-2 inches then upto an inch on this afternoons update to the new 1/4 inch amount. Hmmmm.... kind hard to take them seriously.

Does anyone know how much more rain we will get - out around Kingsville?  I'm surprised it hasn't happened before because of all the rain, but this morning, our basement is leaking again.  I've had to empty the leak bucket three times since about 3:30 this morning - and it's a big rubbermaid container!  Just wondered if anyone would nkow where Ike is going to hit and an estimate of new rain?  I have to go back to work tomorrow but if we're getting a ton more rain I'll have to stay home and empty the bucket.  Thanks - Laura

ok LAST comment ont his.:
.2 How does the National Weather Service (NWS) define a severe thunderstorm?
The term severe thunderstorm refers to a thunderstorm producing hail that is at least penny size, 0.75 inches in diameter or larger, and/or wind gusts to 58 mph or greater, and/or a tornado. Although lightning can be deadly, the NWS doesn't use it to define a severe thunderstorm. If it did, every thnderstorm would be severe, by definition. Also, excessive rainfall may lead to deadly flash flooding, but heavy rain is not a severe criterion either. The flood threat is handled through a separate set of watches and warnings from your lcoal NWS forecast office.

Last I looked, a nickel is bigger than a penny.
I'm done, 10-4, over and out.
September 14, 2008 9:56 AM

Zazel said:

Except for I think you might be using an old definition.  It seems I remember someone posting that definition before and Scott told them the revised hail size was now one inch, which is larger than a nickel or a penny.  That's probably why most warnings, when issued, state the storm is producing quarter size hail.  Sometimes if four quarters hit in the wrong spot they add up to far more than one dollar!

Whirlygirl,
The new definition for a severe thunderstorm is 1" hail, as they revised it like two years ago, when Pleasant Hill was one of three offices testing the new size out. I believe it is standard across much the Midwest now.

I just heard from a friend who lives in the outskirts of Galveston. He works for NWS so he has been very busy. He said that the images and videos that we see on the web are very conservitive. He said it is a mess down there and you can't imagain the damage in Galveston. He and his wife made it through with very little damage so they were one of the lucky ones. They were also one of the families who did not stay (well, he did for work) his wife went home to family in LA. He says it is pretty bad down there. No power, everything a mess, his wife is coming home with a generator to power things. He also knows how lucky they were. I hope everyone else who has friends and family down in TX faired ok too.

Another 0.37 inches from 'Ike' - or the deformation band to the northwest of Ike, I probably should say.

Four day total goes up to 5.08 inches.

Month to date now 9.59 inches.

2008 to date now 45.13 inches.

As far as the sunset, it seems to me it was just the sun pointing up toward the bases of the cloud deck from beyond its west edge as the sun got near the horizon just before setting.  Shining through some light rain added to the spectacular effect.

What volcanic eruption has been attributed to enhancing the effect by Jeremy?

Gary, Jeremy, Brett and Jeff...I think you all did a awesome job with this storm. It was just like that spring storm that was slow to have the rain totals add up, some people started to "not believe"...but when the rain finally started it seemed to not stop. I think we all have enough rain for now. I can tell ya the river down here is WAY up and in some places spilling over into farmland. I would dare to say if we got about 3-4 more inches of rain here and over near Ottawa/Osawatomie then we could of had another flood like we did a couple years back.  IMO only I am saying this! The weather is wonderful today...so much so I am inspired to put out my Halloween decorations. :o) Yes early I know but my girls LOVE it!!!!!!!

Nice to see that occasionally there is bickering that I am not part of.  LOL.

Severe limits for hail is one inch.  Also, there was very little about those storms that were severe, really...short of a few spinup tornados.

I am normally very aware of what is going on weatherwise, and paid that night no attention as the atmosphere really only barely had some of the characteristics of severe.

I will say this...Lee's Summit EMS needs to get a grip.  Not a very good effort.

Ike certainly left its mark...was it overhyped?  Dunno..  Certainly, plenty of property damage.  Maybe the hype saved lives in convincing many people to leave.

Was it the storm of the century like Gustov was suppose to be?  No.  Neither one..and that is where I agree to the overhyping.

Also, I laugh about the arguments about if Ike was a major hurricane.  Certainly it was.  One MPH under Cat 3 status is very subjective.  I do not like the current scale for hurricanes.  I think something needs to be done to more accurately measure the damage potential.

Much like the EF system for tornados.

Anyway..back to the LRC.  This year looks like a lot of FUN!  Looks like each cycle has 3-5 nice storms.

Scott, Friday caught me totally off guard. When I left to get my daughter at school at 3pm for an appt in Leawood I was just happy the rain had cut down to sprinkles and pretty much stopped. The next thing I know around 1700 the ex is calling , telling me there is a warning for Johnson County. I did NOT want to be caught on 435 in OP during rush hour. I guess I have watched Sean drive enough now to safely but expediently get to an area where I could pull over somewhere if need be. I am training Kristen to watch the clouds so she can go with me next season. She had her eye on the right clouds just in case. Even though nothing happened in my area , I prefer to err on the side of caution and am also aware that many people on the road are oblivious as to what is going on, as evidenced by the many folks we saw driving INTO the storms we chased that were not chasers.
