Upper flow strengthens...September 19

Good morning bloggers,

It is Friday!  The weather pattern is going through some rather significant changes and I am going to go over some of the details below.  But, first here is our schedule for the Plaza Art Fair.  We have a booth and will be out there all day on Saturday.  Please come by and say hello.  Stormy the weather dog will be there from 6 until 8 PM.  Here is our schedule of appearances:

Saturday

  • 10 AM-Noon:  Christa Dubill, Mike Marusarz, Amy Hawley, Jack Harry
  • Noon-2 PM:  Elizabeth Alex, Lisa Benson
  • 2 PM-4 PM:  Jenn Strathman, Leeah Brennan, Larry Seward, Keith King
  • 4 PM-6 PM:  Chris Hernandez, Marissa Cleaver
  • 6 PM-8 PM:  Gary Lezak, Jeremy Nelson, Sloan Heller, & Stormy
  • 8 PM-10 PM:  Russ Ptacek, Cynthia Newsome

The weather looks outstanding for this weekend.  There is a weak and disorganized upper level system that will be passing by today and tonight.  This will bring a few clouds, but otherwise I am expecting the weekend to stay dry. We have a very slight chance of showers in the forecast (10% Saturday and 20% Sunday), but we may take that out as there just isn't enough lift to produce any signficant rain.  A brief sprinkle or shower is possible, but the clouds will really be there to make some beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

Look below at the 500 mb forecast for this evening:

As you look at the map above and the map below I really just want you to notice one big thing.  The energy in the flow is steadily strengthening as Autumn approaches.  This flow aloft will continue to get stronger until it reaches its peak strength in January or early Februrary.  On the map above there are 14 lines of flow.  On the map below there are 10 lines of flow.  This means there has been around a 40% increase in energy into the weather pattern since the middle of summer.  What causes this increase in energy?  Temperature contrasts!  As the temperatures start dropping over the North Pole down into Canada the flow aloft will strengthen and it is happening right now.

The LRC (Lezak's Recurring Cycle) that we have experienced for the past 11 months is about to go through a massive transition.  The pattern will change during the next three to six weeks, become established and then begin cycling through what will be next years weather pattern.  This will all happen by early to mid November.  We have learned a lot about the LRC the past two years.  One of our findings is that the pattern continues through the summer and lasts into September.  And, then it goes through a huge change between September 15th and October 15th as the new weather pattern evolves.  Remember, the pattern that is about to form is unique.  The pattern we are about to experience will have never happened before.  Our winter forecast will be based on the LRC and we should have our first impression by sometime in November.

Have a great weekend.  Come on out Saturday evening and visit with Jeremy, Stormy, and me.  If you have any questions about the LRC or weather just ask us and we can discuss anything you would like to talk about.

The Dog Whisperer special segment will be on next Thursday night at 10 PM.  It is premier week on NBC beginning Monday night with Heroes.  I love that show!  Monday is also the first day of fall.

it will be exciting to see the LRC set-up and then your winter forecast! i know that scott believes it is forming now, so the contrasts between yours and his will also be interesting to follow... then to see how they compare to what NOAA will come out with. good luck! - mt

MT,

I do believe the extremely early stages of the new weather pattern has to be starting now, but something much bigger happens in the next three to four weeks.  Last year we identified the beginning of the cycling pattern during the first two weeks of October.  It is still too early, I believe, to identify the new pattern.  We are still in the old pattern which is slowly falling apart.

NIce and crisp here in Leavenworth County this morning, some low-lying fog and no sunshine just yet, gives a very fall morning feel to the day. I noticed driving back from Atchinson yesterday that the leaves are already changing and taking on some striking colors, seems a bit early to me me.
I have really appreciated this summer, my air-conditioner NEVER turned on, unheard of in Kansas, my lawn and pastures are still lush and green.
I hope the LRC gives the snow to the southern half this year, up north, I personally ( I know this won't be popular) could do without even one snowflake, I am convinced the big ole fat black wolly worm I saw, was just visiting from Johnson County...LOL
Everyone have a fantastic day, and enjoy this WONDERFUL weather Gary ordered up for us!!

No plaza art fair for me...I have to work :o(   boo hoo!!! I sure hope everyone else has a great time though. I can not wait for the LRC to get going....I want to be in the bullseye for snow this year. Last year was not exciting at all! Maybe this year we can all benefit, it is a nice thought anyway. LOL!! Have a great weekend all!!

i see you finally toned down your high temp forecasts for the rest of the week...

i am curious to see how next weeks storm evolves...

-------------------

Pvt Murphy,

I only dropped the temperatures by a few degrees.  This upper level storm moving across today was not anticipated a few days ago, and is the main reason we dropped the highs by three to four degrees.  Your doubt of the stretch of 80 degree days all in a row was justified.  It may still end up near 80 all of the days and go above 80 Monday into Wednesday?

Gary,

This seems like a very typical quiet early fall pattern. We are approaching the 2nd severe weather season for the fall months, we will have to see if that pans out at all this year..

Since its quiet, I just had a thought of a while ago you may remember Gary.. let me see if you remember...

But I remember the 1997-1998 El Nino and you used to do a special presentation when you worked mornings with graphics and music, and the music you made or used, would make people cry! I love stuff like that but I can be an oddball.

Jon

---------------------

Jon,

Are you talking about when I would have the special graphic "The Changing Weather" and we would have some soap opera music come on, and then I would go into the weather pattern and how it is going through a change?

What are the chances of a warm dry winter?  If it is as long and cold as last winter I might have to move.

Gary, I remember many years ago my dad's telling me that the weather gets unsettled around the equinox.  That would agree with the LRC's pattern changing September 15 to October 15.

This week has been spectacular.  I love fall and October in particular!!!  October always goes by so fast, but I'm thankful it is a 31-day month!

Have a great weekend!  Edna

Edna,

It's only one extra day.  But, we will cherish it!

Gary, I saw a qiuck piece on a national morning news show this morning about scientists believing we're entering a massive cooling period for the next 20 years.  Do you think this is so?

----------------------

90% of scientists believe the earth is warming up.  We will just have to see how the next decade plays out.

Any interest in starting a "Date for the First Freeze" competition?  Not with prizes and such, just thought that's are next thing to focus on for weather, since things are rather boring right now.

I really dont like this weather,  I like the rain, but even I think it is time for a break, so I am just fine with.

I think Heroes is awesome!

Do you think you and your dogs will be on an episode of Dog Whisperer. I hope soo, I love that show. Ceasar is an excellent dog trainer.

One thing about the fall colors this year is the huge oak in my front is getting a lot of yelow colors on it, and the leaves usually just turn brown and die. I think this is going brilliant year for watching the leaves change colors.

Gary- do you know what happened to the programming tonight?- 8-10?

*****************

Hmm...not sure.  If it was something other than what was in your guide at home we may have been running something else to do make-good ads.  This is when ads get wiped out due to breaking news, sports shows running over normal local programming, etc.  Stuff like that.

What happened to our fall-like weather for next week Gary!

******************

80 degree highs are less than 10 degrees above average.  So while warmer than most days so far this month it is very fall-like.  This is the kind of fall weather I love!

Well it looks like as fall officially begins a summerlike anticyclone tries to take over, go figure, right now the biggest weather that I can see would be some wind Monday into Tuesday.

One thing that I still can't get over is the massive wind storm Ike produced when it met up with that mid lat. system, I mean OHIO had over 2 million people with out power second only I believe to TEXAS!!
It is the closest thing I can think of to actually having a "landacane", I guess it goes to show that there is NO rule that mother nature can't bend if she wants to.
