First day of Autumn...September 22

Good morning bloggers,

Fall begins at 10:44 AM this morning.  The sun will rise directly in the east today, and set directly in the west.  But, the day and night aren't exactly equal. This actually comes close to happening on September 25th when the sunrise is at 7:09 AM and the sunset is at 7:10 PM.

Jeremy posted some pictures yesterday from the Plaza Art Fair (check out his entry below).  Below is another picture of Adogg (Drexel, MO), one of our favorite bloggers that we met on Saturday.  We would like to thank everyone who stopped by to say hello.  Here is the link to more photo's from the Plaza Art Fair:  http://www.nbcactionnews.com/ugc/cat/2008ArtFair/default.aspx

The weather was outstanding for the Plaza Art Fair, and this nice late summer/early fall weather will continue.  Look below at the 500 mb flow forecast for Thursday:

The main jet stream is still way up to our north.  An upper level high is trying to form over the southern Plains and this combination will allow us to be in the 80s most of this week.  The entire weather pattern is about go through some major changes, but not for another few days.  More on the changing weather pattern on NBC Action News tonight after Heroes.  This is premier week, and Heroes season premier is on tonight.

Have a great start to your week!

Gary

Good Morning, Gary,
Reference your first paragraph, is Sep. 25 actually the equinox?

Have a great day!

Edna,

No, today is the equinox, but the equal day and night lag by a couple of days every year.

I always celebrate this day- Fall is my favorite season!  In the past we have held "Autumnal Equinox" parties!  I feel like I've been "gone" forever... my computer has been down the last few days and I've been totally lost without my fav. weather blog!!  Wish I could've come down to the Plaza Art fair and seen you guys but had to pull "chauffeuring " duty for my daughter all weekend as the hubby was out of town.  Maybe next time...  Anyway I'm so glad the weather cooperated for the art fair- it was just perfect!  Happy Fall everyone!  Dea

Edna, I wondered about that, too, since I remembered "equinox" means "equal night"...Here is an explanation from wikipedia:
There is either an equinox (autumn and spring) or a solstice (summer and winter) on approximately the 21st day of the last month of every quarter of the calendar year. On a day which has an equinox, the centre of the Sun will spend a nearly equal amount of time above and below the horizon at every location on Earth and night and day will be of nearly the same length. The word equinox derives from the Latin words aequus (equal) and nox (night). In reality, the day is longer than the night at an equinox. Commonly, the day is defined as the period that sunlight reaches the ground in the absence of local obstacles. From Earth, the Sun appears as a disc and not a single point of light; so, when the centre of the Sun is below the horizon, the upper edge is visible. Furthermore, the atmosphere refracts light; so, even when the upper limb of the Sun is below the horizon, its rays reach over the horizon to the ground. In sunrise/sunset tables, the assumed semidiameter (apparent radius) of the sun is 16 minutes of arc and the atmospheric refraction is assumed to be 34 minutes of arc. Their combination means that when the upper limb of Sun is on the visible horizon its centre is 50 minutes of arc below the geometric horizon, which is the intersection with the celestial sphere of a horizontal plane through the eye of the observer. These effects together make the day about 14 minutes longer than the night at the equator, and longer still at sites toward the poles. The real equality of day and night only happens at places far enough from the equator to have at least a seasonal difference in daylength of 7 minutes, and occurs a few days towards the winter side of each equinox.

Is it just me, or do the trees seem to be starting to change early? This weekend I started noticing yellows, golds and even some reds on some trees. I thought usually the changing doesn't start until October?

Marlina, I noticed the trees changing a few weeks ago. It is more noticeable now. I agree that based on them starting to change a few weeks ago, it seems early to me too.

But I couldn't because of a family event:(

Gary and Team,
You said that the weather pattern is about to go through some big changes.  I was wondering if you have an idea if the weekend will be dry and warm?  It is a big weekend at KS Speedway and we always hope for weather like we have been having the last couple of days! :)
Thanks--Anna

JudyH and Gary, thanks for the additional info about the equinox.

Gary, I well remember how particular my dad was about everyone being very quiet when the weather forecast came over the radio back in the 30's and 40's.  How he would have "eaten up" your weatherforecasting on television with all the visuals!!!  I'm just like he was about listening close to the weather.  I get so bothered if the telephone rings during weather!

As always, thanks for your outstanding work.  Edna
