Morning Thunderstorms...September 24, 2008

Good morning bloggers,

Watch NBC Action News for the most accurate forecast!  And, Thursday night at 10 PM will be the special segment with the Dog Whisperer.  Cesar Millan teaches Breezy, Stormy, and me some lessons!

A complex of thunderstorms formed overnight and this is now moving through at 6:30 AM.  You can see the radar image below, and the outflow boundary produced by the thunderstorms on the line south of Belton and Holden, which is racing south with thunderstorms forming north of it.  This has placed us in a zone for thunderstorms that should last into mid-morning before falling apart.  Some areas will see some locally heavy downpours, which is great news for your lawn, but will create a wet morning rush hour.

The weather pattern is in transition during the next two weeks.  It has dried out, so this mornings rain is a nice change of pace.  Have a fantastic day.  We will try to update the blog later today.

This is the most intermittent type of thunders storms. It might started poring in five seconds then it completeley stopped and it keeps doing that, it getting heavy again, the first dropp marks to hit the ground must have a diameter of 3.5"!

Juba,

Thunderstorms produce some pretty big rain drops.  Some of them may be melted hailstones.  It is stormy early this morning.

getting some thunder and heavier rain again right now at k-10 and k-7.

enjoy the day all! - mike

Mike,

It sounds like you enjoyed the weather this morning.  It certainly did get exciting for a while.  This should all fall apart by mid- morning.

The slow ride gave you a chance to see the lightning and enjoy the morning thunderstorms.  Have a great day Mike!

There were cool looking clouds driving E on Colbern Road towards Lake Lotawana. They looked kind of like small clouds layered under other small clouds. Towards the lightning it was a flat grey, boring.. I took a couple pictures of the cool clouds, but they don't show the coolness that well. My SLR probably would have done a better job than my point and shoot camera, but the husband put it somewhere and I am not sure where.

thunder getting louder!!! :-)

Audra,

Our Powercast HD computer model really pegged this mornings thunderstorms well.  It is falling apart just as it had suggested it would.  But, most of us had a nice rain before it weakened.

Have a fantastic day.

We put down some bug killer on our grass last night...I was hoping to get a few drops this am. It looks to be falling apart right at the Miami County/Linn County line though. Maybe next time. I will certainly enjoy the day though. There are only so many more nice days left for the girls to play after school so I am taking all I can get. Soon enough I will complain the girls are full of energy and no where to run it off cause of the weather. LOL!!

Oh my goodness!! Somebody needs to find out a rainfall total for Stilwell or Louisburg and west and South of there. I drove up Old Metcalf this AM. and about 167th and Old Metcalf it started to pour. And I do mean pour!!! I have never driven in rain where your wipers were absolutely useless, even on the fastest speed. Where there was spray coming off of your tires because the rain came down so fast and so hard that the roads were seriously ponding. Where the water just grabbed at your tires to the point that you were forced to slow way down. And it continued- all the way up 69 south, west on 68, and south on 169 to Paola. People were waiting under bridges because you just couldn't see. I have reached Osawatomie now where it is doing nothing except for an occasional flash of lightning, a rumble or 2 of thunder, but no rain. So if anybody has a rainfall total for around 155th and Metcalf (Stanley) and anywhere south and west between 69 and 169, I would be curious as to how much rain did occur in that area . It has to be a significant amount!

-------------------------

It was likely around 1/2 inch to maybe 1 inch.  It would have been more if it would have lasted longer.  It was certainly a heavy downpour, and the rain is now rapidly coming to an end.

The morning rain was quite welcomed! Have noticed a great increase in the fall color foliage this week. In some areas it looks like mid October, think we are seeing an earlier change of color this fall.

Gary, i can't wait for Thursday night!  I'm anxious to see your Dog Whisperer segment!  Did you catch his 100th episode?  Maybe someday you and the dogs will be on the 150th episode or something!  We had a nice little shower this morning- it came down pretty quickly.  My rain gauge says close to an inch- could that be right ( I'm at 68th Terr. and Oak )- don't know if the hubby watered the other day and could've possibly gotten some water in the gauge.  Anyway, it would be nice if we got an inch this morning!  Dea

If KCI got 0.94 inches of rain this morning as the NWS website indicates, that gives KC an "official" rain total of 9.78 inches for September.  Moving up the ladder of the wettest Septembers on record.  Gary indicates perhaps one more slight chance of rain before the month ends?

I have no idea how much rain we had this morning between the 7 and Colbern. But it rained for a little over an hour here. As soon as the rain started the thunder and lightning reduced which was a small bummer. It was not pouring, just a nice steady rain for over an hour.

Thanks for the info on the earthquake website.  My only guess is that it had to be construction going on.  The K-State campus has been breaking ground nearby...

Wow...the storm this morning was perfect...thunder and lightning upon waking up, enough rain for the grass and flowers and clear skies by lunch time:)

well the rain was certainly welcome, the rain might delay the continuation of the changing leaves by a little bit...however it may be too late for them though as even the largest trees are beginning to change here...about a month earlier than last year.

as far as the front goes, it is rather weak which wasnt expected from me a while back, although it became rather evident it wasnt going to be a pattern changer several days ago.  but atleast some of us knew it would be coming a couple weeks ago and it came exactly when we said it would! whereas others thought it would wash out before it got here just a few days ago...and yet they are the ones with the 'advantage' of having a theory to predict weather before others...but i digress...

i am happy to see that this front however appears to be the first in a line of several disturbances coming over the next several days.  another front will come through sometime later saturday...and another on monday, and another on tuesday...it looks like we will be back into the 60's for highs by perhaps monday.

scott, the backdoor coldfront is back on the maps...and yes, the beginning of october looks good...well...interesting, atleast.

Regarding the changing of the leaves, the last time I was in KC over Labor Day weekend I noticed the burning bush in our front yard already had some bright scarlet leaves on it, and many others were beginning to get a reddish tinge.  I remember thinking at the time that it seemed kind of early for this change.  It seems others are also noticing a much earlier fall color change this year.  A harbinger of things to come, or a relic of the cooler than normal LRC pattern we've had for most of the past year????

Yeah, sure Notes, you are not kidding.  I get it!  I only rarely don't back it up with my favorite 500 mb maps.

Anyway, the fun begins very soon.  Tomorrow, we will go into the changing pattern a bit.

Gary, Scott, Pt. Murphy.... you guys have all alluded to the fact that October looks 'interesting'.  Would someone please clarify that a a bit more for those of us who aren't so good at reading maps & things?

I've got a more stuff to do outside before winter than I want to think about .  Painting, bushes & trees to plant, limbs to trim up, patch up the driveway, plus all the basic winterizing.  How about a few clues guys?

Thanks

Tomorrow we will go into some of this.

Good coolish morning to you sir!!! Just wanted to drop in and say hello-still haven't had much time to really follow things but I still try to read the Blog every day even if I don't really have a chance to make an entry-I hope that some time here soon things calm down a bit and I can get back into the game. Kind of like the John Fogerty song: Put me in coach....

We wound up close to 1/2 an inch out here in SW Lawrence yesterday. (I'm about 1 mile East as the crow flies from Clinton Dam). Interesting this morning: I was out at about 4:00 A.M. and you could see the fog trying to roll in/develop-it looked like that scene out of the Exorcist when Father Baron first arrives at the house......

The next few weeks will be fun to watch for sure and see how things develop-I must say a tearfull farewell to the LRC of 2007-2008-it sure gave Lawrence some fun weather at times-thunder snow-heavey rain-cool temps-great year for sure!!!

Kind of looks like now that the quasi tropical system along the Eastern Seaboard is kind of gumming the works up a bit for the next few days but after it finally exits, things look to really start moving again.

Have a great day-and as much as I like it to be cloudy and cool this time of year (hey-easier to teach Latin, History, and Politics to 13-18 year olds when it is cloudy outside-to say nothing about the teacher!!!LOL) this weather the past days has been spectacular!!!! Great to enter a Blog again-man I miss this!!!! Again, have a great day and as always, thanks for providing such a great place to discuss weather-You, Jeremy, Brett and Jeff are TIGHT!!!!
