Rain Chance...Cooler Air Arrives

Watch NBC Action News HD after NFL Football and starting at 5 a.m. Monday morning as we track thunderstorms on LIVE:ESP!

What a great weekend weatherwise!  Highs were in the 80s and sunshine was the rule.  This weather came at a great time since we had thousands of people in Kansas City for various outdoor events.  High temperatures both Saturday and Sunday were about 10 degrees above average.  No where near record territory though...as the record high for Sunday was 103 degrees!

The focus quickly shifts to a cold front and our next rain chance.  Showers and thunderstorms are lined up in the Plains right now.  With a northwest flow aloft these storms should drop into our region tonight and Monday.  Rain chances sit at 60% for about the next 12-18 hours for the viewing area.  Not everyone will see rain, but if you are need of some rain this is our best chance for the next 7-8 days!

Here is a look at the infrared satellite picture.  The blue and violet colors represent the colder cloud tops associated with the thunderstorms.  So the storms are located from Minnesota back into Nebraska.

Rain totals will be tough to nail down since there will be storms scattered across the region.  Locations that do see the storms could see 0.50" or more of rain.  But once again some spots will see nothing!  Rain chances are the greatest in KC early Monday morning through about the midday hours.  After that I think the focus shifts south/southeast.

Once the front swings through the cooler air will spill in.  Not cold for this time of year, but you will notice the change with a cool and crisp airmass in place.  This will lead to lows in the 40s and highs in the 60s to low 70s for a good part of this week.  Here is a look at the forecast position of the large trough over the Great Lakes.  This will continue to push the cool and dry air our way.

There is no freeze in sight and no rain outside of Monday.  That means for allergy sufferers the moderate to high pollen and mold counts will continue.  Hang in there!

Brett will keep you updated Monday morning on the rain and track the showers on LIVE:ESP.  I'll be back in Monday-Wednesday for Gary.  Thanks for stopping by the weather blog this weekend!

Are those false echos on the radar or has rain already started to form East of the metro?

The radar is in clear air mode.  Just some 'clutter'.  The rain is still in Nebraska.

been watching the radar since the first storms popped up in southern south dakotas this afternoon. looks like we ll be gettin a few rumbles in a few hours. thats what i like, night thunderstorms. are you gonna time it out for us jeremy?

I think in the metro or close to it 4-7 a.m.  northwest MO probably 2-4 a.m.  Areas southeast of I-70 during the morning or later.  We'll have to watch how far south the tail end of this goes.  Not everyone is going to see rain.

Good Morning!

Got a whole .04 here at 130th and State Avenue. Sure feels refreshing outside this morning and I am sure it is a sign of things to come later this week. Have a good day everyone.

Anyone else's ears congested this morning? Mine are driving me crazy!  Is something going on with the pressure today that could be causing this? :)

jeremy,

what do you think about the second cold front progged to come through on wednesday? dont you think it will reinforce the cooler air even just a little bit? you have it getting warmer on wednesday when it could actually be the coolest day of the week.  does this mean that you dont think it will have an effect on our weather? i figured at the least it would provide some cloud cover and with morning lows around 40 it would severely limit daytime heating during the day...i always thought that these backdoor coldfronts tend to really take a bite out of our temps...they certainly did during the summertime~ ****************** PVT, We'll adjust the 7 day as needed when I get in today. Last night I think I was one of only two stations in town to have temps in the 60s for 2 days this week(Tues/Wed). So as always we were on top of things. Wednesday could be cooler than 68...but I wouldn't lose sleep over it being say 62 or 68. The question will be any cloud cover and how cool the morning low is. These factors will contribute to our afternoon high on these cooler days. Jeremy

What is a backdoor cold front?

Seems the 7 day forecast reflects Wednesday being the coolest day of the week.

marlina, a backdoor cold front is a front that comes from the NE, instead of N/NW.  It is often due to a push of cold air from a trough over the Great Lakes.
******************* I'm guessing those that wanted more 'typical' fall weather will be happy this week. Jeremy

alas scott, the current 7day is different than the one i spoke of this morning...atleast on the website...the kids own the tv at the 5-6am shows.

i wasnt trying to make a big deal with the next 48hrs or so regarding the forecast.  i was just curious as to how the weatherteam would recognize the backdoor front setting in when it is...it would seem to be an important 'feature' to keep an eye on for those who are interested in future cycles' wheeling and dealings.  this backdoor front and resulting blocking pattern could be a major player, depending on how comfortable the great lakes low becomes in its position...a couple years ago, our coldest weather of the season came under quite similar conditions to what we will be seeing over the next couple days...but of course, it was over the middle of the winter and not fall, but the waves and streamlines are similar.

****************

PVT,

This may or may not be a big thing in the new pattern.  The big features will be the most noticable.  Like last year's long term longwave that was over the Midwest.  That feature kept the wet/snowy weather in the same place.  So one backdoor front may not seem like a big deal...but later down the road maybe this is part of a big feature.

Our forecast went from 68 to 66 for Wednesday.  If the sun is out I would be a little surprised if it was much cooler than this.

I am expecting a quite blocky pattern this year.  I would not be suprised to see some odd occurances as the jet gets shoved into places it normally wouldn't want to go due to the traffic jam downstream.

I am seeing an interesting pattern.  I think I have most of the pattern understood, but still watching the western ridging.  It has been a bit flaky thus far and I can't trust it yet in how waves will drop out of the mountains.

Is it getting dark out because it's going to rain again or because the DOW just dropped 700 points?

Well last night/ this morning at around 4:00 a.m. was fun, I am off today so I stayed up and watched the thunderstorms roll through St. Joe, we had some good heavy downpours and lightning, now as the cooler air settles in we may have one of the better fall foliage seasons this year due to the wet conditions sustaining into the early fall.
