Sunday Evening Thoughts

Watch NBC Action News HD after NFL Football and starting Monday morning at 5 a.m. as we track our next storm!

Good evening everyone!  I was at a wedding yesterday so hopefully everyone had a chance to see Gary make a cameo on the weekend morning show!  Outside of the getting up early part...I think he had fun:)

Let's discuss the weather!  Sunday marked the 4th consecutive day with highs in the 70s in Kansas City.  At least 2 more days with highs in the 70s are expected.  I did a quick look back at past Novembers that started with 3 or 4 consecutive days in the 70s.  This isn't unheard of...but the years I dug up pre-1910 that are like this year are 2005, 2001, 1987, 1978, 1964, & 1914.  So it is probably safe to say the first 4 days of this month will rank somewhere in the top 10 warmest starts to a November.

Conditions will likely change by Wednesday as dew points will increase as a storm heads our way.  Wednesday is somewhat tricky because low or mid level clouds could limit our daytime heating, but with a south-southwest wind at the surface any sun could quickly jump us to around 70.  Sometime later Wednesday into early Thursday showers and thunderstorms will head in our direction.  The SPC does have most of our viewing area outlined as a location that could see severe weather.  This is still at least 3 days out...so let's wait until Monday or Tuesday before we try to pin down the details.  Just like early Spring, the question marks will be dew points, frontal locations, ULL position, and timing of the storms in relation to severe weather chances.  Here is the 500mb forecast map for late Wednesday with the ULL located to our west-northwest.

At the very least I hope we can pick up at least a 0.25" or more of rain.  After the heavy rain from about 2 weeks ago...we have been dry here in the metro.

Behind the storms much cooler air will return to the area.  Maybe a day in the 40s is in the cards by later this week!

Enjoy Monday and the mid to upper 70s that will be around the region!  We will probably fall about 3 or 4 degrees shy of a record high.  Winds will be gusty during the afternoon with some gusts around 30 mph.

Hey now, one May 1st was enough!  I sure hope this doesn't go down that same way.  The area NW of Liberty is not even back to normal yet from the first one!  I like the thought of rain, just put down my fall fertilizer.  I'm crossing my fingers for a good rain shower and nothing more.

I wouldn't worry yet.  The storm a few days away and things would have to set up just right to get a large scale severe weather outbreak.  Make sure to check the blog and our newscasts all week and we will keep you updated.

I have a pollen question................ Once it freezes isn't the pollen season over? I get a weekly email update from the company that we get our sons allergy medicine from and they are listing a medium pollen count for ragweed on Wednesday. Is this possible or are they just trying to sell me more medicine? He has been stuffed up and sneezing but I thought this time of year it was a cold.

******************

This is from St. Louis County health:

Why do pollen and mold counts vary so much from day to day?

Changes in temperature, wind conditions, humidity, or precipitation can affect the counts greatly.

  • Temperature: A sudden temperature drop lowers the pollen count significantly. Certain pollens are seasonal. Trees are dominant in the spring, grasses occur in late spring and early summer, and weeds grow from late summer until the first hard frost.
  • Wind: Pollens are small, light, and dry so they are easily spread by wind. The distance the pollen travel can depend on whether the wind is strong or calm that day.
  • Humidity: When the air is humid, pollen becomes damp and heavy with moisture keeping it still and on the ground.
  • Precipitation: Rains tend to "cleanse" the air of pollen. When the pollen is wet, it becomes heavy with moisture keeping it on the ground.

I remember when I was young there was one day in November when we had a tornado warning. It was a bizarre day!

Don't forget earlier this year there was a January tornado outbreak!

Did anyone else feel an earthquake this morning (Monday morning) around 3:43 a.m? I looked on the USGS website but their latest update was at 3 a.m. Maybe my mind was playing tricks on me from lack of sleep this weekend (the husbands pager was going off all weekend). But I was asleep and I woke up to my bed "rolling" and squeeking, it seemed to be a N S motion. Then I remembered another blogger complaining about her dog acting wierd (she was wondering if it was the fog) and I was wondering if they were related.

Well the USGS just updated their website at 4 and no earthquakes the past hour shown. So maybe my mind was playing tricks on me. Time to get back asleep before the alarm goes off at 5:45. ugh
