Coldest morning so far...November 18, 2008

Good morning bloggers,

It's cold!  This is the coldest morning of the fall season so far.  Colder days and mornings are ahead, but first a big warm up is on the way.  Look below at the GFS forecast for tonight at midnight.  This the 850 mb level (around 5,000 feet up):

The days are short, but this is going to be a nice warm-up on Wednesday.  It will likely surge into the 60s tomorrow.  But, how high will it go?  The warm air indicated by the red lines  will shift south as we move through the day tomorrow (the red and blue lines are isotherms, lines of equal temperature).  By Thursday evening a strong cold front will have moved through.  Looking below at this next map valid at 6 PM Thursday, the temperatures at 850 mb are forecast to be 17 degrees C colder over Kansas City than on the first map.  So, the roller-coaster ride of temperatures will be continuing:

This is still not an Arctic air mass.  It will turn colder on Thursday.  But, will there be a weak storm moving across on Friday night?  The European and Canadian models have that next system moving across way north of Kansas City which would imply absolutely no chance of any precipitation Friday night. The GFS, however is consistent at bringing a weak disturbance near our local area late Friday night.  Let's see what the new data indicates.  Right now the chance is very slim.

After this goes by the weather pattern goes through a major transition with a storm coming into the western states.  We will be making our forecast for Thanksgiving week on NBC Action News tonight.  And, don't forget next Monday night at 10 PM is our winter forecast as we are continuing the analysis of this years LRC (go to www.LRCWeather.com for more details on the LRC).

Have a fantastic day!

Gary

Wow it is cold out Gary.  At 6:09 when you were telling everybody it was 22 at KCI it was 28 here in McLouth KS.  We have puddles of water in the driveway but now they are ice.  But it is a beautiful sky this morning.  Good thing the weather pattern is challenging.  It has been so-so for so long you guys could have gotten complacent.  A little low level cloud cover up in Atchison County this morning.  If the sky is clear this evening the Space Station/Shuttle combo will be visible at 5:56PM and 7:28PM real low on the south and west horizon tonight for all of 20 seconds.  Best night would be Frday evening at 5:36PM when it is 41 degrees above the horizon traveling SSW to ENE for 5 minutes.  But cloud cover will be in the way won't it.  Well be patient young man, you will get your snow one day soon enough.

It may be clear this evening.  Thanks for the information.

Yes cold, and frosty this morning here in St. Joe, my digital thermometer had 25.9 when I got up this morning, and I think Rosecrans had 21 degrees, tis' the season.

I am looking forward to the Thanksgiving forecast as we are traveling to Sioux Falls over the break. Last year in December, we got caught in a snowstorm on the way home through northern Iowa and I really don't want to do that again. Congrats on the new LRC web site. I look forward to my morning and lunch break reading material! :P

It definitely was cold out this morning. We had to turn the heater up a couple notches so it could keep up with the chillier temperatures. It would be great if we saw some snow this weekend again! If not, I'll just look forward to your Winter Forecast. Please give me a reason to do the snow dance! =)

hmm... I know for one thing, we are getting into the active pattern of October. I think??

Andrew,

We aren't yet. Remember, when you look at the computer models, that's what they are computer models.  Right now we are not in the October part of the pattern. Maybe we will be in the coming days and weeks. We must go day by day until we really see the weather pattern repeating.  It looks like it is, but I am not certain yet.

It is cold, but not that bad.  40 or so this time of year is tolerable. Hope Gary doesn't issue Artic air warning like last year. Winter just dragged on after that warning.

No Arctic air Watches or Warnings yet!

Gary, I'm going to be traveling on business next week...well out of the viewing area. Will you be posting a video of the forecast after you deliver it Monday night?

--------------------

I believe we will have a video ready on NBCActionNews.com after it airs Monday night.  Have a safe trip.

Andrew,
I would guess the Friday after Thanksgiving we will start getting into the October weather pattern and would guess we will have 2 larger systems go through in December.  There was a system that came Oct. 7th then a larger system a week later and finally a system the 23rd.  My prediction we will have rain Thanksgiving day into Friday with a chance for it to turn into snow.  Then a system come December 4th-5th and a system December 13th ish.  The October 14-16 storm was a little bigger than the others and would work out with Gary's prediction for the 1st 1 inch of snow.

I hope December through February is a big fat ARCTIC AIR WARNING. I want blizzards and heavy snow. I want to be snowed in!!!!!!!!

Back to reality:
One 8-10" snowstorm would be nice, then a few little 4-6" events. Gary, hows Thanksgiving looking for the Minnesota/Iowa border area? Any snow? I'm going up there for Thanksgiving and I want to get stuck there. I know it's a little early, but I'm so excited for winter(and my mom wants to know).

Can you give the link for the recording of the Winter Forecast Monday night? (I hope I didn't ask the same thing as Mike B!)

Since the weather is fairly boring at the moment, thought I would ask an LRC question:  Does the LRC apply to the Northern Hemisphere only or does the Southern Hemisphere also contain a similar LRC?  If yes, would the beginning of the LRC be opposite in the Southern Hemisphere?  For example, would the SH LRC setup in March/April and then cycle?

I've had this question in my mind for some time and thought now is as good as time as any to ask.

Thanks!

--------------------

I will assume there is one in the Southern Hemisphere, but I haven't studied it at all.  If it did exist it would likely set up in their Autumn months of March and April.

supercell,

I don't think they have really researched that yet. I think there probably is.

Thanks Gary and Andrew,

In my mind, I believe the discovery of the Northern Hemisphere LRC marks the beginning of a major advancement in meteorological science.  If research proves a Southern Hemisphere LRC exists as well, then the LRC takes another major step forward.  The discovery of a SH LRC would accomplish two important goals:

One, it would provide a test for the LRC theory.  If a SH LRC is proven, the LRC theory strengthens significantly.

Two, there may be a connection between the NH LRC and the SH LRC.  Perhaps this is the most important reason for researching a SH LRC.  If the connection exists, it could lead to the underlying cause for the LRC.

Discovery of the LRC is a breakthrough; Discovery of the cause leads to Law.

Well the models seemed to have changed their minds again, poor things, they are not used to being in a new pattern, either way looks like they now want to continue the Northwest flow troughs to our north and east a little longer, having another short wave pass to our north and east late in the weekend, as for that little disturbance, well there is still hope, it will probably shift some more either way on the models, oh well we are still getting to know our new LRC for 08'-09'.

---------------

Nick,

Your last statement is important!  Yes, we are still getting to know it.  The GFS has a very different solution every 6 hours, and right now we don't like the solutions because we want the weather to be exciting.  Let's see how it looks at the end of the week and hopefully it will start lining up better.

Have a great night.
