Major changes...November 21, 2008

IT'S FRIDAY!

We are heading into the holiday season next week and the weather pattern is going through a major change.  It does now appear likely that a storm will affect our local area around Thanksgiving Day.  As this weather pattern reveals itself more and more every day, we are getting closer to identifying the cycle in this years LRC.   There are likely three major longwave features that keep showing up.  I will talk about one of them now, and when our winter forecast comes out Monday night we will go into extensive detail on what we believe to be a fascinating weather pattern, one that will bring some rather wild weather across parts of the nation this winter.

One of the features that has shown up a few times already is a split flow near the west coast of the United States.  Look at the map below:

The flow aloft is splitting big time just off the west coast of the United States by early next week.  This map, above, is valid at midnight next Wednesday night and it shows a storm that has dropped into the southwest part of the nation centered near Salt Lake City, UT.  Just upstream, or northwest of this developing storm is where the split is located.  Notice how the flow at 500 mb takes off to the north going way up into northern Canada. This is the northern branch of the jet stream.  The southern branch of the jet stream breaks off and heads south, off the California coast curving around into the southern plains.  This set up almost guarantees that we will experience some kind of a storm later next week, right around the day after Thanksgiving.  When the flow splits like this the models have a very difficult time and make many major errors.  If you have been paying close attention to the computer models then you know they have been all over the place offering many different solutions for the holiday week and beyond.  So, confidence may be growing that we will have a storm later next week, but at the same time there are still many questions that will slowly be answered in the coming days.

There is a very good chance that the split will lead to a very high amplitude weather pattern in about 10 days.  A big ridge will likely develop near the west coast of Canada or just off shore during this extended forecast period and we have to watch this carefully for our first signs of Arctic air mass generation.

The 06z GFS run has a snowstorm near Kansas City within a week.  And, this is something that is possible, but as discussed above with the developing split flow the computer models are making major errors after day one.  So, we will be monitoring the holiday week forecast and updating it as we get closer.  We will be making some special graphics to describe all of this today and tonight on NBC Action News.  Jeremy Nelson will keep you advised on the trends over the weekend, so check back in Saturday and Sunday.  And, then Monday night at 10 PM........The NBC Action News Winter Forecast.   I will be doing an extended on-line version by sometime Tuesday as well.

Yesterday, Stormy and I went to the "Thanks for Seniors" Thanksgiving meal in Mission, KS.  Here are a couple of pictures. It was really a great and fun event. Thank you for having us there!

Have a great weekend!

Pvt Murphy,

Did you see the 06z GFS?  That is snow on that map for late next week.  We'll see how it looks this morning.  And, I am supposed to be off Thursday and Friday and I think we all know something seems to happen when I get days off.

so gary at thsi point do you think the storm next week will be snow or rain? i knwo its a week out but i was just wondering what your thoughts were on this at this point.

------------------

At this time of the year every storm will have the potential to produce snow.  The overnight 06z run of the GFS has it as snow late Thanksgiving night.  We will be watching this closely.

PVT,

Something will happen either Thanksgiving or the day after and the first Wednesday-Friday in December.  Gary is off those days:)

If four days from now the models still show a good chance of snow in KC late next week I will begin to pay attention to them.  Until then, unless all the models converge on one solution before then, I'm doubtful on their prognostications, especially given the split flow.

Chilly day expected here in N Texas with highs near 50...but it's back to near 70 by Sunday.  :)

Randy,

Not the answer you want...but we'll have to really wait until early next week to get a good idea for Friday/Saturday.  The potential of a storm is there, but how fast and where it tracks will go a long way in deciding if any precipitation would be rain or snow.  I'm sure you'll be able to make the concert and enjoy the Plaza lights.

we already know that the great lakes area has gotten off to a fast start this winter.  however, just wanted to throw out there how cold/snowy its been in the south.

two of my favorite towns in the world are having an excellent start to the winter season(given their latitudes).  boone nc has already had almost 18" of snow this season, and the ski resorts around boone have a base depth of almost 5 feet! thats unheard of this early in the season for them.  asheville city schools have had three snow days already for the kids and is running well below average temp wise.  the mountains surrounding them have picked up nearly a foot of snow this week! just for reference, asheville is at the same latitude as little rock, arkansas...or just south of OKC.  the whole southeast is running from 2-4 degrees below normal temp wise as well.  its been cold in atlanta...colder in the suburbs than it has at kci so far(barely)-including today! orlando recently dropped down to 39 degrees(record), and sanford airport has had 3 records this fall(1 in october 2 in november) for cold temps.

interesting stuff going on around the country.  thank goodness for global warming, i dont know what we would be doing with all this crazy snow and record cold otherwise...

The GFS has a total breakdown of the Omega block the Friday after Thanksgiving.  Does anyone else see this?  Is this an uncommon occurance with the breakdown of a normally strong ridge?

Jeremy, just a side note, and not to be picky, but at the top you have the date of Nov. 22... and today (Friday) is the 21?   Unless I've missed Friday somehow, lol.
Thanks

It was a cold one here in Maryville, MO.  According to TWC desktop weather, we hit 9 degrees this morning just before 6 a.m.  Is the storm you have mentioned for Thanksgiving include us up North?  I am having many family members over (some from KC) and I should plan accordingly.  Apparently, the picnic in the yard is out...ha.

*********************

The pattern looks to change pretty dramatically later next week.  If the storm slows it could mean a really great Thanksgiving.  If it is nice that may mean walking off the big meal:)

Ah, pvt_murphy getting his digs in at global warming proponents again...short-term temperature fluctuations versus long-term climatic trends are like the daily fluctuations in the stock market versus its long term trends.  In the stock market, you can have down days in the middle of a bull market (ah, the good old days).  Similarly, temperature trends are erratic from year to year.  There can be cool years in the midst of a long-term warming pattern.  It is the long-term trend in temperatures that tells the tale.  Other factors influence global temperatures besides the infusion of extra greenhouse gases into the atmosphere by man.

Nick,

Good thing the winds were near calm or the wind chill may have neared 0 in spots!

Looks like 10 was the official low in St. Joseph and 14 for KCI.

If this storm does happen, is it looking to be just a one day event?  My daughter and I are planning on driving to Lincoln, NE early Friday to have my family's Thanksgiving on Saturday.  I really, really hope the models are wrong and everything moves south...or just doesn't come together.

Do I honestly have any hope for getting up north next weekend?

********************

No one should worry just yet.  The models have been consistent in a change in the flow and pattern, but inconsistent in the timing, strength, and location of a possible storm.  We'll keep you updated heading into the holiday week, but don't cancel any plans yet.

You know it's cold when I can't even entice Windy to go outside for a walk, she just tucked tail turned and dove back under the covers!  It was 15 degrees this morning at 5:00 (our usual walk time), and a slight 6mph wind, wayyyyyy too cold for me.  I guess we will just have to get a good run in this afternoon, it should be more pleasant than yesterday's run in the cold wind.  I am still hoping for "no snow, no snow" as my family is coming in on Friday after Thanksgiving.  I haven't seen them in a long, long time and this will be our Christmas celebration as well, please keep the snow away so they will be safe.  I'm still hoping and praying for a drier than normal, warmer than normal winter, we need a break from all the snow, rain and cold weather we've had the past few winters and springs.  Have a great weekend everyone.  Enjoy the sun!

Gary, when do you think it will be below freezing here by the JC Exec. Air port? If it can get back down before 8:00, I might have some time to make some snow!
DID I MENTION I HAVE A SNOW MACHINE!
I think Gary knew, as I sent him pictures last year, but can the rest of you believed it! All I need is sub-freezing temps. and I can get a good 3-4" on my front yard in about 4 hours.
Real snow is better though.

Gary, sorry to bother you about this, but I'm just to excited to wait. Around Albert Lea,MN I'm visiting for Thanksgiving. From the looks of it, there's supposed to be a storm around. Would that storm affect us up there. My hopes are that I get snowed in, but I'll take a few snow showers. What would your general forecast be for that region on Thanksgiving?

It is great snowmaking weather right now.

I really dont get why so many dislike snow.  It is a great weather event that only comes around so many times a year in Kansas City.  I lived in Colorado for a few years, and THAT is a place you dont want to go if you really dislike snow.  Snow has to be one of the most relaxing events.  You get a fire going in the fireplace, cook a winter themed dinner, and kick back and relax to your favorite show or movies for the evening.  Usually while doing this I get up and look out the window to see how much snow is piling up.  It is exciting!

Snow is great while it is falling and right after it falls when it's still fresh and undisturbed.  However, it's less enjoyable after it's been trodden and driven upon, salted, sanded, shoveled and plowed into piles, and compacted into solid ice on untreated roads and unshoveled sidewalks.  And of course the addition of animal excrement.  Then it becomes dirty, ugly, and dangerous.  Kansas City side streets that remain unplowed and untreated for weeks after snows in the midst of a long cold spell become solid sheets of ice that are next to impossible to drive upon if sloped.

That said, I really enjoy experiencing big snow events and watching snow accumulate.  One dream of mine is to travel to some location in the Great Lakes snowbelts and experience a high-intensity, days-long lake effect snow event some day, the kind that drops 6 or 8 feet in total.  While I experienced intense nor'easters in Connecticut as a kid, I haven't experienced a snowfall over 10 inches in 30 years.

---------------

First of all.....Alden, everything should be fixed now, it was just a brief problem.....Now, for everyone else, the latest data does have some snow here on Thanksgiving night.  We will see how it looks as the next few days go by.

Why I don't like snow:   car accidents, getting stuck, falls, it's messy, hard to drive in, hard to work in, our son's wheelchair gets stuck and then dirty from all the melting snow causing mud and muck, it limits our excursions outside, causing damage to the infrastructure of our communities, it's expensive.
Why I don't like the cold:  it makes me hurt, it limits my excursions outside, it's expensive, it's hard on our vehicles, many people suffer broken pipes, astronomical heating costs and have a hard time keeping their homes warm and then resort to other means which often lead to fires or carbon monoxide poisoning, it kills off the flowers, the trees, the grass.

I'm sure everyone can come up with just as long a list as to why they don't like the heat.  But right now, I can't think of single reason to not like the sun, green grass, dry earth, and enjoying the great outdoors without having to wear 16 layers of clothes!

And yes, before everyone tells me to MOVE I know this is Kansas and I know what the weather can be like as I've lived here for 47 years.  It's just my opinion in response to someone asking why people don't like snow.....
I will be moving, 6 more winters to suffer through and I'll be in Yuma enjoying sunshine, dry air and lots and lots of HEAT!

Whew, end of my monologue, sorry.  As for weather right now in Paola, it's 31 degrees with a 7 mph wind making it feel like 23 degrees.  I took Windy out for a run after work, the sunshine was great and the low wind speed helped make the cold more tolerable.  I can't wait for warmer temperatures and more sunshine for tomorrow.
Have a good weekend everyone!

Looks like some radar returns from the disturbance to the north, likely virga due to the very dry air, but interesting none the less.  As for the cold and snow debate, I understand why a lot of people don't like snow and cold, it is uncomfortable to the skin and yes it is dangerous and is a nuisance in our fast paced world, but at the same time it is very neat to have major storm events that are cool to follow and you don't have to worry about them blasting away half a town in seconds, and causing major physical damage, yes it does make driving more dangerous, BUT  that can (to some extent) be mitigated by being careful ect.   Not only that but snowstorms are so neat creatures, they are a STORM that is known to make things more PEACEFUL, it is a weather event that you can "play" with, hard to do that with a thunderstorm or a heatwave( you can play IN a thunderstorm;) but that can be dangerous;))  Oh, well I am not trying to CONVERT warm lovers to cold and snow, but I am trying to say that people that like the snow and cold are not crazy, so here is my list of why a prefer a good snow over a hot, green, sunny summer day: 1. I don't get along with insects, especially the stinging, blood sucking, nasty trying to get into your food kind, 2. I hate having to mow.  3. Humidity is nasty, if it were not for the A/C( and MCS activity) I might actually hate summer. 4. I would rather try to warm up for being cold than the other way around, I mean I am my own natural heater. All I need is something to slow the loss of the thermal energy that I output.  In the summer when it is hot to get comfortable I have to have technology to cool the air, sweat works, but it is limited. 2. shoveling snow can be good exercise without having to deal with insects, and you don't need to mess with runny gasoline and not only that you don't have to do the whole lawn, just the drive and the side walk.  And snow dampens sound waves so it does make this sometimes way to loud world seem quieter and more relaxed even if it is only for a bit.  WOW, quite the snow and cold rant, my pressure gradient tightened again, well good night to all, snow, cold, warm, dry lovers ect. ;)
