Sunday Update

The Winter Forecast is Monday at 10 p.m. on NBC Action News!!

Just think...the winter forecast is basically 24 hours away!  I'm not sure what time the winter forecast will air during the show so make sure to tune in at 10 p.m.  We will answer all your winter related questions after the special airs tomorrow night.

Until then we can expect clouds to hang around for part of tonight.  As mentioned many times a few showers are possible southeast of the metro.  But overall I'm not expecting much rain.  Cooler air returns to the area on Monday...but not that chilly.  We will still top out around 50.

The excitement that was a possible storm over the Thanksgiving holiday looks like most of the moisture will stay south...but it is very close!  This should mean dry weather thru most of the week.  I left in a 20% chance of 'something' on Friday.  If the track changes we will let you know.  I wish I could post a couple of maps showing this setup from the last cycle...but I'll hold off due to the winter forecast:)

If you have questions or comments please let us know.  Otherwise have a great week and we are looking forward to sharing the winter forecast on Monday!

A quick question. When was the last time we had a snowfall of more than one inch in Kansas City after March 15th.

Thanks,
Randy

looks like the latest gfs brings the storm a little bit further north than the previous runs let's see what it looks like tomorrow.

Rethinking your winter forecast predictions now? Not that I know exactly what they are, but Ive takent the hints that you are heavily leaning in the "stormy and active" direction. The last several runs of the GFS has completely tanked on any "significant" precipitation over the next 10 days....

****************

The GFS isn't very accurate past a few days.  That is one reason why once we get a really good handle on the pattern we can forecast things that aren't showing up on any computer model.  That gives us a huge advantage in the winter & spring months.

I won't say which way we are leaning or not.  All the secrets get revealed Monday Night.

I thought it went through the 1st of the year, but sometimes I'm not kept in the loop.  You may want to ask Gary this question.

Wikipedia could be wrong...

"According to NBC, Weather Plus will begin its phase-out late November, with its closure date set for December 1, 2008."

Jeremy,
What is causing all the moisture to stay to the south? I have noticed when these cold fronts come through there is nothing but cold air. The moisture is like not making it up this way. Could you explain please?

*******************

In some ways it is like last year when fronts moved thru, but we had a 3 week plus dry stretch around this time of year.  Once the jet stream strengthened and storms were a bit strong they drew moisture farther north.  Right now a lot of the storms are pushing through the Great Lakes.  Really it will depend on what part of the cycle we are in as to how much moisture or 'storminess' may be available.

The GFS is kind of being a party-pooper of sorts, but then again just a slight shift in how the energy comes out can still make a big difference... LESS THAN 24 HOURS...

i also saw one Thursday night when driving home around 11:50pm on 152 just east of 291 hy in liberty. The one i saw was white and had a long tail on it. most of the "shooting stars" i've seen in my life (only 24 years old here) were very short, 3 seconds or so. i saw this one heading south/ maybe southeast-ish and saw it for about 25 seconds.. pretty cool.
