Update snow trends....November 29, 2008

Good Saturday morning bloggers,

Watch NBC Action News at 5 and 10 PM as we track this developing storm.

UPDATE at 9:45 AM:

I will write a new blog up around noon today.  The snowflake contest could end today.  One inch of snow may accumulate on grassy surfaces later today and tonight, with a few locations possibly seeing more than one inch.  As you can see in the entry below, a storm is developing right over us and snow with rain mixed in is increasing at 10 AM. Will it continue to increase and spread east?  I think it will.  So, let's keep tracking this.  Developing storm systems are very tough to forecast because it is developing right in front of our eyes.  Look for another blog entry around 11:15 AM.  And, Jeremy Nelson will keep you updated later on today.

Previous entry from 7:15 AM below:

Snow has started falling just west and north of Kansas City at 7:15 AM, and we are likely about to see our first legitimate snowflakes of the season.  It has been raining on the leading edge but then changing to snow as the heavier precipitation moves in.

A storm system is forecast to develop over Kansas this afternoon. We must watch this closely as a small comma head circulation may develop later this afternoon and evening.  The 12 hour RUC forecast valid at 6 PM tonight shows an upper level low forming just southwest of Kansas City and the energy about to dive in from North Dakota.  This is at the 500 mb level, 18,000 feet up.  Depending on how this storm forms today will decide how much precipitation is generated.

It only takes one inch of snow at the NBC Action News Studios to end the snowflake contest.  Right now I am expecting an inch of snow in a few spots on grassy surfaces.  The road temperatures are all above freezing and unless it snows really hard I doubt we will see any accumulation on the roads today.  Some spots will see the snow while others will see a mixture of rain and snow.

The morning snow was enough to stick on Brian Boffman's deck in Kansas City, KS.

Let us know what you are experiencing and Jeremy will read some of the blog comments on the air during the 8 AM hour.  And if you see a little snow accumulate please send pictures to  jnelson@nbcactionnews.com

So far it's all liquid in Louisburg. We had a brief sleet shower last night. Will we get to enjoy the snowflakes this far south today?

Yes...you should see a mix or changeover to snow this morning.  May mix with or change back to rain this afternoon before going back to snow late.

The RUC does develop a little comma head that allows us to catch the back side.  It seems in response to a the vort at the base of the trough just south of Joplin.

Should be fun to watch, not holding my breath for much accum...hope I am wrong.

------------------

Why do you hope you are wrong?  The upper level storm forming south of Kansas City is just that, one that forms as the energy moves in from the northwest and north. These types of situations are tough as it will look like the precipitation is ending, and then new bands keep forming in response to the enhancing lift and developing comma.  It will be a very interesting day for sure, as it already is watching Jeremy show the Plaza with big snowflakes.  I am STILL WAITING down south for my first snowflakes.

I hope I am wrong and this developing storm digs west a bit..that would give a bit more chance I think for the energy to come down and develop the back end closer to KC.  The models have had an eastern bias for a while, though..it didn't quite make sense to me, but regardless...I hope it does snow quite a bit.

Just not sure it will...  It is pretty to look at already, as it is the second snow I have seen this fall in Lee's Summit, but I guess I am ready for the big snow, not the teaser snow.  LOL

Now, as it relates to Brian's picture above...I need that kind of weather station setup!  Santa?  Are you reading this?

Hi Everyone -

We have pretty active snowfall down here on the northeast side of Ottawa, Kansas - coming down fast but with small to medium-sized flakes. So far, the snow is just sticking to grass, decks, and roofs. Jeremy, our kids are driving back up to Minneapolis today - how far north is this precipitation reaching? Have a great weekend, everybody!

P.S. I just signed up yesterday - this is my very first post (yea!).

The kids and I are loving the snow here in Olathe this morning.  But it complicates plans for traveling back to Colorado Springs today or tomorrow.  Any chance this could blow up into something more than a light dusting here and westward?  I know there is a high wind warning out for western Kansas tomorrow during the day, with a chance for some light snow showers, but I do not want to get surprised by a change over from just a few flurries and some high winds to several inches of blowing, drifting snow.  Would prefer to wait until morning to leave KC, but if there is the possibilty this could change into something larger, then we might have to change that plan.

Good mid morning to the both of you!! Snow continues to fall here in SW Lawrence-been falling now since about 4:30 this morning. It is not really sticking too much but that doesn't really matter-it is snowing!!!!! If I am looking at the Nex-Rad radar correctly-as always a big if!!-the snow is back building somewhat west of Lawrence and another band has formed west of Topeka-it appears these two bands are trying to merge. This is just awesome!!! It doesn't really matter so much to me weather it really accumilates as much as the fact that it is snowing and that we have some energy in thge sub pattern of the NW flow-this I think will indeed bode will for later in the winter. Also, it is just fascinating to watch a storm form right before your eyes-what a great learning experience for the weather hobbyist!! You just gotta love the weather here!!!!

Well, I'm off to light my fire-smoking ribs today-I love doing this in the snow-awesome stuf!!!

Have a great day!!

Bill,

This is getting tather exciting.....and not just today!  WINTER IS ARRIVING EARLY!

I love peoples different responses to snow. My husband is excited about the possibility of snow. He can't wait for it to snow. My youngest looked out the window and said with a lot of dread and dismay, "it's snowing". I just enjoy watching and reading about peoples responses to snow. Whether or not you like snow, have a great day everyone!

I wouldn't get too excited about any accumulations yet - temperatures are still in the mid to upper 30s right now (36 last time I checked) - and the snow is not sticking at it's maximum intesnity that it has been falling at the past few hours. I fail to see how we will see any accumulation at all - even a dusting has yet to occur on car tops out here in Overland Park.
