Accumulations possible...update at 11 AM

The Snowflake Contest may end within the next 12 hours!  A storm is forming right over Kansas with a dusting to 2 inches possible.

Good afternoon NBC Action Weather Bloggers,

We are experiencing a fascinating weather day!  And, the GFS just came out with so much more in the next few weeks.  If you have been tracking the weather with us before, during, and after our winter forecast was issued last Monday night, then you know what the models have been forecasting.  All different kinds of solutions.  We will talk much more about the longer range in the next couple of days, as the latest GFS run is stormy and rather wintry.  But, today let's concentrate on this storm.  Look below at the two radar maps:

The above map, from Weathertap.com, was taken at 9:35 AM. The second picture below was grabbed at 10:35 AM.  Look at the massive increase in radar echoes during this one hour stretch.  A storm is forming right over Kansas this afternoon. This should come as absolutely no surprise at all.  And, I won't be shocked if the snowflake contest ends later today or tonight.  Jeremy will be at the NBC Action News studios measuring.  One inch on grassy surfaces does count!

This storm forms right over us intensifying this evening before exiting and ejecting out through southern and eastern Missouri.  You can see the forecast map for 6 PM this evening on the last blog!  Let's watch the snowstorm gradually increase as we go through the afternoon. It will interesting to watch the snow fall during the KU/MU game today. I have been in touch with Arrowhead keeping them updated on this situation.  Most forecasters struggle with these storm systems that develop right over us.  It is obviously cold enough to snow and as the sun starts setting later today, the potential for accumulation will increase.  Most of the accumulations would be on grassy surfaces, but if it snows hard enough in spots some could stick on roadways and sidewalks.  So a few slick spots are possible overnight.  The best chance of seeing an inch or more of snow would be on the Missouri side.  In the metro the chances are better that we will stay in the dusting to 1" range.  A lot depends on if a band of moderate or even heavy snow moves in and sticks around for an hour or two.

Have a great day.  We will try to get to your thoughts and ideas on this storm and the next couple of weeks of exciting weather that may be ahead of us.  The LRC is in full cycling motion.  We are still figuring out more details and will know so much more in the next week to two weeks.

Gary

We've got a slushy acumulation on our deck, and the snowfalkes stick on the cement for a cuople seconds, if it snow like this all day there will be cement accumulation around 3-5 in the afternoon! I hope the inch of snow doesn't happen until tomarrow though!

Heavy snow and starting to accumulate at JoCo Airport!

My family from Louisiana is in town and wanting to leave today. They drive from here through springfield down through west plains...can you tell me if they are going to run into bad conditions?
Thanks,
Becky ************* Becky, If they leave this afternoon before 3 p.m. I think they would be okay. We might get something to stick on the roads this evening or tonight. Not everywhere, but in spots. Jeremy

Should we expect the roads to get bad later on? I've noticed the temps are going up and the roads now are just wet but will the temps get cold enough to make the snow stick to the roads?

I live by the Legends and it has been snowing since 7:30am but nothing sticking, not even slushy accumlulation on grass, deck, or car, it melts as soon as it hits, wonder if that will change?

Heavy snow at JoCo Airport. ***************** It may be tough to get the snow to stick until after the sunsets and temps drop back a few degrees. Jeremy

Stormdog - Not my favorite time of year, but interesting to see a few snowflakes occasionally mixed in with light rain.  Otherwise, dreary and dismal.

GO ACURA - think we are in really good shape on this, Gary, and I am more optimistic, for some reason, on this, than I have ever been  - will take time, but it will PRODUCE!!!

Later, Dog

It is only 33 degrees here in Lee's Summit. It is snowing pretty good now. It was fun, we just watched the movie Polar Express and the snow outside was matching the snow rate in the movie. It was cool to go from the t.v. to the window to see the snow. The snow is so pretty falling. I don't see it sticking at all, but it is beautiful to watch!

It is a well known fact that colder winters usually equate to less snowfall.

That was not the case last winter.  Below average temperatures and above average snowfall.

The back edge of the precip is pushing into the Topeka area right now and should make it to the metro in the next 3 hours or so - after that all precip should be done.

****************

There will be snow showers right thru Sunday.  The storm is continuing to develop.  A comma head may form over the next few hours.  You are right the back edge of this wave is near Topeka.

There is another wave that will drop in tonight and Sunday.
