Strange Picture of a 'Hole' in the Sky!

Here are some interesting pictures just emailed to us from a friend of Gary's.  He took these near Kilgore, TX this afternoon.  He was amazed at the completely clear circle in the cirrus clouds.  The first picture was taken about 25 miles from the 'hole' in the cloud.

Here is a closer picture of the 'hole' in the sky.

This is one of those things that I can't really explain why it happened.  There is an airplane contrail near the hole in the second picture.

After a quick search I found this explanation from the NWS.  The airplane may have ahd something to do with this 'hole punch'.

I guess I could have checked before posting this comment but, was there a low or high pressure in that area?  I have seen before a pressure system produce this, just like the eye of a hurricane.  Although there generally is a twisting or rotation in the clouds.

I'm not reading it quite the same as you, or at least in regard to the 18Z NAM.  I see precip amounts the same as you, but I see it all as rain with no ice through 84 hours.  See link below..

theres a name for this,I can't remember but its when colder air from the stratusphere somehow falls quickly ito the troposphere.

A jet plane flew went through the cloud deck.  The cloud droplets were supercooled water which then turned to ice crytals that have now gone away or are there but very hard to detect.

I'm not completely sold on that explanation.  The clouds are already made up of ice crystals since they are cirrus clouds and very high.  The hole is very large and if this was the case of an airplane flying through, I think somewhere along the line I would have seen feature before.

Do you fly or have other photos like this for comparison?  Jeff Penner said he has heard of your explanation before.

I guess this is so seldom seen that I haven't had to deal with this before:)

the new GFS has come out and it is looking more favorable for some accumulating SNOW. right now i would say 2-3" across the viewing area, however if the models continue to trend ass they are, then im thinking maybe 4"?   what do you guys think?

We will do a complete blog update this evening.  This storm could bring almost all precip. types to the area.  So we will try to break this down a bit.  But I would say confidence will not be good enough to put numbers on things until Sunday or Monday.  Depends if it keeps slowing down.  Still each solution is a little different and we don't hype storms, just tell you what we think.  And at this point it is too early to talk snow accumulation amounts.

I would agree Kcchamps.  The 18Z GFS is certainly the most encouraging thing we've seen so far this season.  Will look forward to the next one..

There was an article on that that I saw a long time ago... it may be in one of the articles posted here already, but if I remember right, it had something to do with the higher clouds(the very high cirrus) precipitating into the lower cloud layer and "seeding" it if you will causing a portion of the lower cloud area to precipitate away creating a hole. I think that I see some higher cirrus above the hole in the cloud deck.

For some reason without doing the search myself that does ring a bell.

Good Evening Jeremy: I was just wondering, each snow event we have each year, what is the % of how much we get each event? for example, say 10% are 3-4inch snow 50% are 5-6 inch snow's ect

Jeff Penner just used an article by the NWS to write a story.

http://www.nbcactionnews.com/content/weathernews/story/Easy-or-Hard-to-Receive-a-Big-KC-Snow/mpzst-JTBUKl5LeXHfrEVA.cspx

This should help.

the hole in the sky was strange, i took the picture on i 20. to the south there were 2 other half holes in the same type of clouds, kinda like an m, with the same charicteristics, both had more of the whispy clounds in the center, more pronounced, however in  only half circles , also strange looking. in the first picture of the hole, the plane contrail you see in the second foto had not yet passed through the cloud, that moment occured around ten minutes after the first foto was taken, however, i accept generally the opinions i have read sine i posted the foto,

Hey Jeremy. Those are commonly referred to as "hole-punch clouds" The generally accepted theory is that they are caused by the intrusion of ice crystals into a thin supercooled altostratus deck. They accelerate downword similar to a downburst and are often caused by an airplane.

Thanks...I had time to do a little more research and posted a link with all the details.
