A rainy night may turn to snowy Tuesday

Good early morning bloggers,

Look at the 12:45 AM surface map.  It was still 57 degrees at KCI early this morning, but temperatures are about to crash.  Look at the teens in Nebraska:

We are having a rather steady rain tonight as this storm continues to develop.  Part one will move through by the morning rush hours, with part two looking more and more impressive, but with still 1 inch to possibly 2 to 3 inches in a band that may form during the afternoon, most likely in southern locations. Cold air is surging south and heading our way.  I will have a lot more around 6 AM this morning, but it still looks like we will see some accumulation of snow during the day Tuesday.....

Back to sleep for now.

Gary

I guess if it is going to be cold there might as well be snow to go with it.

06Z NAM backing way off on snowfall potential.

It did not stay consistent with its 0Z run.

Its heaviest accumualtions are much farther east and northeast.

But does it accurately portray the cold air that is already surging into northern Missouri?  It's already down to 36 in St. Joe, that seems colder than the NAM would suggest. Do you see this or is it just wishful thinking?

One of my close buddies from Colorado called me tonight.  He goes "dude is it snowing out there yet?!!?!?"

I said...no, no it is not.

"Well it is a heavy snow and it is way cool right now over here"

Yeah, well we got some rain coming our way I said back.

What a depressing night. Time to go to bed.  I will wake up, make coffee, open the blinds, and wait for the flakes while I work from home in front of the fireplace.

Dwx,

The 06Z NAM is a little off with the 540 line.

Not by much though. It looks like its pretty close to on target. Not off enough to make a significant difference, IMO....

Any guess on as to how much ice we might see before the snow?

-----------------

The rain is ending, so very little ice accumulation is expected, but temperatures are dropping fast at 5 AM.  The snow won't begin until later.

Good changing weather morning to you sir!! Currently sitting at 34 degrees here in Lawrence with gusty NW winds and some lite drizzle (can drizzle be lite?? LOL). It is awesome out this morning!!

What a great event to watch unfold the past 12 hours or so!! I have to admit, I have not looked at any models but have been focusing on the radar, satelite, and surface charts. A few random observations that I hope are at least in the right ball park!!

1. Looking at the surface charts the front seems to be drapped from just west of Columbia down to just south of Wichita into Oklahoma. Columbia is still at 54 degrees at 11Z this morning and Lawrence is at 34-pretty good front!! I think it will be interesting to see jsut how far this front continues to move east in Missouri this morning-if it gets hung up just south of say Jefferson City I wonder how that will affect the track of this second wave.

2. Water vapor imagery-if I am seeing this correctly, it really says alot!! We for sure now have two distinct waves that have developed. The first one has zipped on by and is really drawing in the colder air. It appears the second one is just now again trying to organize itself. i think the center of this second wave is currently sitting over the New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma border. Water vapor imagery is really showing the clouds and moisture form this surging North East. Will be interesting to track this and see how it develops and what path it takes. Will also be interesting to see how far ssouth it digs over the next few hours.

3. Radar returns are pretty steady in the Oklahoma Panhandle into SW Kansas this morning so this second wave is generating some action. Interesting stuff for sure!!

4. My concern for my own back yard is that with the colder air surging in here like a bowling ball that the second wave winds up tacking a track sort of like a Texas Hooker and it winds up digging into Texas and then ejects North east from there-that is not a good track for Lawrence as we are too far west. I am kind of hoping the front stalls out a bit now.

What ever happens in the end, this is just fascinating to me to watch all this unfold right in front of us!! I do wonder again if the front gets hung up if this second wave may not track a little further North along the frontal boundry. So many items this morning!!

Well, we are in the quite zone this morning-i hope I can sneak a few minuets in between classes this morning to look at some charts etc. The other item I think thaat is fantastic is that the storm is there-we go weeks with NW flow and then vola we just get a SW storm-coincidence-I don't think so!!!

Have a greta day-I hope you get some sleep today-ity could be a very busy day for sure!! Thanks for all the updates and responses-one can learn so much on this Blog (and the LRC Blog)!!!

Well Gary was right, he said 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch of rain and I just checked at Lee's Summit airport and we have gotten a tiny bit over .50 inches of rain since midnight. It did not seem like it rained that much. It is cooling off  here now. It is down to 35 degrees.

Hey Teamster, on NBC this morning I saw that they have "workers wanted Wednesday". I guess they list available jobs Wednesday morning. I think they also said that you could look at the listing on their website. Just trying to help since you told us that you lost your job.
