Update: A snowstorm for some on December 9, 2008

Update at 12:45 PM:

A heavy snow band continues on the south side with some spots already over 2 inches near Greenwood, MO extending across the state line to south Overland Park.  Will this band shift north?  It is nearly stationary and we will have an update around 2:30 PM.  Watch NBC Action News at 5, 6, and 10 PM tonight as we track this strange weather day!

Good late morning bloggers,

Snow has spread in from the southwest.  So, many questions have now been answered.  Now, where will the heaviest snow bands set up and how long will this last?

Travel conditions will rapidly worsen during the next two hours all around the Kansas City metro area as temperatures continue to drop.  Here is our snowfall forecast:

Bands of heavy snow are now developing.  This storm will likely last through the afternoon with a trend for ending from the northwest eventually.  Our next blog update will come in around 2:30 PM.

Please be careful today as the roads will be extremely slick and hazardous.  Watch NBC Action News for and closings.  And, we are already tracking our next chance of snow tonight at 5, 6, and 10 PM.

We will do a call out for snow totals and pictures later on today.  Be safe!

Gary

Just began snowing here north of Basehor about 15 minutes ago.  It has quickly covered the pavement and gravel.  I'd say beautiful--but I just want a few 70 degree days back. :)  Cabin fever with my 2 year old will set in soon.  Thanks for your coverage of this event Gary and team.  You all are the best!

Can someone please share the snowfall forecast from the picture Gary posted?  For some reason I'm not able to view them at work.  I'm in southern Johnson County Kansas.  Thanks!  I'm dying to know and so are the kids in my classroom!  Lots of snow blowing around here with a little bit sticking to the grass. Yeah!

Doesn't look like Gary has changed any snowfall totals.  It's starting to collect on the roads her in Tongie.  However, snow is blowing so much that it is not staying in any one place.  May have a hard time measuring this one!

under forcasting the noth in my opinion.  there is a nice area of blue turning to green on the radar noving ENE into my area all you need is a half hour of green and that is an inch.  the south will have more duration.  dewpoint is 23 temp 28 humidity 82 percent so it will not need to hydridate the air,  expect it ot start in 15 minutes or so.

--------------

2 inches is certainly possible, maybe more within this developing band.  Keep us updated.

It's snowing in Leavenworth and coming down at a good rate.  It's been snowing for about 15 minutes.  When it first started, it was blowing snow off my roof--quite windy, too, out there.  I stepped out my kitchen door on to the small deck and discovered it was icy.  My plan about moving my car to a better location suddenly changed.  I did a U-turn and went back into the house!!

I can never see the graphics when I am at school, but I am home with a sick child today, so I can. Hope this helps.

The problem about the first snow and a snow right when it's happening - and why I think it causes so many accidents - is because when it's falling the roads just look wet (initially). Little does the driver that is going the normal speed limit down the highway know, but that "wet" look is actually slush, and the next thing you know he's spinnin.

Trust me - I know this because a few years back ago I was passing someone because I thought the roads were just "wet" - but it was actually slush underneath. Whirl! Thankfully, I didn't hit anything - but nothing like doing a 360 spinout at 60 MPH to teach you about the dangers of the invisible slush :-O

Updated Hazardous Weather Outlook from the NWS:

A BAND OF MODERATE SNOW HAS SET UP ALONG A LINE GENERALLY FROM PAOLA
AND OLATHE KANSAS EASTWARD ACROSS LEES SUMMIT AND BLUE SPRINGS TO
RICHMOND AND CARROLLTON MISSOURI. SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF AROUND 3 TO
POSSIBLY 4 INCHES ARE EXPECTED WITHIN THIS BAND. LESSER AMOUNTS OF 1
TO POSSIBLY 2 INCHES ARE EXPECTED ON EITHER SIDE. PATCHY FREEZING
RAIN AND SLEET IS ALSO EXPECTED SOUTH OF THE BAND OF MODERATE SNOW.
IN ADDITION...STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS OF 20 TO 30 MPH AND GUSTS OF 35
TO 40 MPH CAN BE EXPECTED THIS AFTERNOON...REDUCING VISIBILITIES IN
BLOWING SNOW. THIS WILL LIKELY CREATE SOME TRAVEL PROBLEMS ACROSS
MUCH OF THE OUTLOOK AREA THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON. THE PRECIPITATION IS
EXPECTED TO END FROM WEST TO EAST THIS EVENING.

I am in the 3-4" area for NWS. But everyone is saying that the storm is getting weaker. Why the increase in snow amounts if the storm is weakening? It is still snowing pretty good here in Lee's Summit, by the corner of Colbern and the 7.
Also Jeremy, thank you for banning Teamster. As one of the people he "attacked", I found his attitude insulting to all. I read this blog for the weather, and to learn about the weather, not for other things.

Is this going to be it once this band falls apart or pushes east?  Or should we expect a little regeneration down the road?

Jeremy, I used to live in the U.P. from '85 - '90 and I can still recall ALL the snow that used to fall. Everyone down here thinks when it snows more than 5" that that's a lot, but that's nothing compared to the snows I can remember shoveling when I was a kid living up there. *************** Snow plows are also the size of skyscrapers up there! I am guessing that this type of snow that we are getting here in Lee's Summit is a powder type. I say this because it is all blowing off the roof. Very little is sticking to the roof.

Question.. While I was in the grocery store I mentioned that the flakes were getting bigger. I was told that that was good. Why? Is it like rain, large rain drops generally don't last that long or because the larger the flake the faster it accumlates? It also seems like the really big flakes are wetter and they stick more and the very small flakes blow around more.
