The snowflake contest is over!

Good evening everyone,

The snowflake contest ended at 3:23 PM.  I measured, with several witnesses 1 inch on the Plaza in front of the NBC Action News Studios.  We are now up to 1 1/2 inches on the grass and a bit over one inch on some other surfaces.   We still have to go over all of the entries that picked today.  And, the winner will be announced later in the week.

How much snow did you have?  Let us know and we will show some of the totals tonight.  We will also be looking ahead to an amplifying weather pattern on NBC Action News tonight at 5, 6, and 10 PM.

Gary

He is contemplating taking a "tardy" and leaving early (maybe around 7:30ish), but we are wondering if it would really make a difference in road conditions.  Anyone have any thoughts on it?

The 12Z GFS has the arctic front very nearby on Monday and Tuesday of next week.

Its so close that temperatures up near maryville are projected in the 30's, whereas down toward Joplin/Springfield, temps will be in the 60's.

Obviously the KC metro area would fall somewhere in between. Now, I'm guessing Gary is using his knowledge of the weather pattern to predict early week temps for next week.

He lists highs on Monday and Tuesday in the Mid 20's.

On a more personaly note, Im going to the Chiefs game on Sunday.

Last nights 10 p.m. forecast high - 60 degrees :)

11 a.m. forecast today forecast high - 38 degrees with wintery mix :( :(

6 p.m. forecast this evening forecast high - 52 degrees :)

Talk about a roller coaster ride!!...lol

Obviously the arctic front is crashing on sunday. I know that. I just had to tease a little. Sunday is a very difficult forecast for sure!

Gary,

You can up the total in Marceline to 1.75". Got another quarter inch with one last spurt of heavy snow.

Now it is just blowing around. I just came from the school, and it looks like a tundra with the snow just flowing across the ground of the football field. I also saw a couple big snow twister things, drove right into one of them.

All I no is that every road here in Marceline is a sheet of ice, and I have not seen 1 snow plow or ice truck, and it is SLICK!!

Again 1.75" in Marceline

Chris,

I hear what you are saying, but this isn't the first time I've measured snow before, and I chose about 15 spots both on the north and south side of my house, and each measurement I got was between 4 and 5 inches.  Lots of wind today, but I chose a number of places that were pretty well sheltered from it, and still came up with the same result.  I wouldn't submit it if it were only one measurement, especially on a windy day like today.

chfs, as you are talking about an event many days away, I think the three letter word can be reserved until much closer when details are known.

Take this storm, it wasn't until very close or during the event until everything was known.  Throwing out a wishcast for something that is so disruptive is likely what gets you in trouble.  The event in of itself is not bad, but the human impact is often tragic for some and disruptive to many.

Good cold winter's morn to you sir!! Currently sitting at a frosty 12 degrees with a 3/4 moon glistening on the snow-it is absolutely beautiful out this morning-a bit of breeze but the snow crackeling under your shoes as you are running is just awesome!!

While we only recieved an inch or so here in SW Lawrence it was an awesome storm to follow and track and to be honest, considering how fast and furious that cold air was pushing in here I feel very fortunate to have recieved what I did. For sure this was not a major snow producer any where but many times in a situation like this where the main snow axis sets up from an Ottawa into south KC line Lawrence will only get flurries. I'll take what I got and say thankyou very much Mother Nature!!!

Well, I am back to trying to figure out where we are in the pattern-I thought this was the 22nd of October part but now I am not sure at all so I am going to head back and look over things and see if my non weather brain can figure somethings out!! This should be a great exercise in futility LOL but it will be fun to try!!

The LRC will show the way for next week-the models are going to have a horrendous time in the next 3-4 days trying to figure out when the energy ejects out of the SW and what to do with that massive core of cold air. It has bewen 81 below zero-minus 81 in Siberia ths week-that is extremely cold for the Northern Hemishphere-that is Anarctic old!!! That core is about to go on the move to our side of the pole-will the core of it spill down west of the Sierra's or it will poor down east of the Rockies-if, like the Scarecrow, I only had a brain to see the LRC I could see it!! LOL I just can't imagine it modifying as much as the modles are now showing nor can I imagine it comming and going as the 0z Euro and GFS are dipicting.

Have a great day and as always thanks for reading and providing such a great place to discuss and learn about the weather (here and the LRC Blog)!! I'm off to see the Wizard for a weather brain so that I can maybe figure out the pattern this year!!

Bill,

Now that the weather has calmed down I think Gary will have a day or two to really look at the LRC and provide bloggers some insight.  Your total of around 1" isn't bad considering the main area of snow stayed to your south.

I have a feeling the smell of polar bears may drift down sometime next week!

I measured in 3 places protected from the wind, all 3 were very close, averaged amount is 4.25" for Paola.  It's 10 degrees this morning, windchill says -2, bitter cold.  First we had sleet, then freezing rain, then the snow which lasted until about 5:15 last night.  Dreading going on to school this morning, longing for summer.....*sigh*.

Maybe mini-summer this weekend if we get into the 50s.  Lots will depend on cloud cover, etc.
