New Action Weather Plus

Good evening bloggers,

I am on in just a few minutes.  We are tracking a strong likelyhood of being blasted by an Arctic air mass next week with some mainly snow chances.  Watch our newscasts tonight for some special weather graphics that Jeff Penner and I have prepared for you.

We will be launching our updated local weather channel, Action Weather Plus later in the month. What content would you like to see on this as we will be adding in our own content.  Right now I think we will rotate satellite movies, radars wide and close, some of our sky views, and other things. What would be your favorite features?  And, we will still have two weather segments that would rotate through.

Let us know if you have any thoughts?

Gary

I have noticed another channel does not have the snow on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Is this a snow event or a freezing rain event?

We don't watch the other channel.  Right now it looks like a chance of snow!

Well Gary I don't know about anybody else but what I would like to see I am sure isn't feasable.  I would like to see you guys make that broadcast available to all of us out here in the world on satellite TV.  Honestly, me and my wife can't get enough of the Action Weather Team.  Getting you guys off our Direct-TV beyond the 5,6 & 10 would be great.

-----------------

I will have to figure out how to get that done.  Let me know if you have any ideas.

Can you guys put the weather casts from 5-7 AM, Midday, 5, 6, and 10 on Action Weather Plus?

Alex

That is a possibility.

Hi guys

I just sent you an email of a couple of pictures of our red sunset tonight to the weather@ address.

I would like to be able to see specials on the LRC showing how things work!

Current Temps map, longer weather cast besides 3 minutes. Maybe a national loop of the Satellite, radar?

If guys were not so busy, you guys could make a few specials.

Will have to put something educational on it to comply with FCC? or does the FCC rules not apply for channels like this?

Can you tel us the date it will launch? PPPlllleeaasee!

Andrew,

December 29th!  We will make it educational.

Gary and team... I'd like to see an educational spot. It can be seasonal specific or just general weather related items, just the normal kind of things such as how a tornado is formed, what's an ice storm & how des it occur, hurricanes etc. Combined with some of the wild weather events we see around the world, I think it would be pretty smart.

Good luck with your project!

Thanks Gary - I can live with snow - I hate ice.  You deal with powerlines and with relatives traveling ice would be a nightmare!

Gary if I were an engineer and understood the FCC guidelines on satellites a little better I just might have an idea.  But alas I do not.  Now Amateur TV, thats a different story.

yikes, I just saw your long ranger, and I realize you guys don't watch other channels, but your forecast is really identical for next week for another. Better head out and buy up all the batteries and milk at the store! :) ok, maybe a tad premature. lol

That was a good 6pm forecast.  Lots of exciting enthusiasm, AND I noticed you said no ice.  After reading the blog all day and watching you say that I couldnt help but laugh.  You kind of had to squash the fear of it before it hits mainstream for now. If only so many in KC knew the talk of ice on this forum today haha.

Guess we wont know more for a few days for sure, maybe Saturday?

This channel isn't offered out here only channel close to it is the one out of Columbia, looks like i'm out of luck.

Gary & crew seem to have a better grip on things than any other station in town from what i've seen. After all these guys were the first increase the potential  snow amounts for yesterdays storms.

Next week still looks like it has potential for something good even though it's way too early to pinpoint what will happen.

I read the last blog...lol that was pretty funny...I know a lot of you are reffering to me on the Ice comments..I apologize for any anxiety or distress that may have caused last year..I have since learned not to put my personal opinions about certain kinds of weather, out onto the blog because some people don't want to have to worry about extreme weather, (which I understand). I think you all know that I love winter...I love the snow the sleet the ice and everything...I just think its cool....

Second I don't think the word Ice should be banned...its not like a cuss word or anything its a weather term and its something that does happen in the winter...we should all be prepared for any weather that comes in the winter. I don't see a good possibility of an ice storm yet..so don't get worried..lol And of course...the most reliable expert source for that information is this weather team, right?.....so I don't think anyone should be worried about something that has not even really been addressed as an issue by the weather team..

thats my opinion on this and I hope that we can all get along with this and have a great winter!! *with lots of snow!*....oops I mean...warm and dry... 8)

Seems like you should be able to set it up that any update to weather plus is automatically updated to the latest webcast.  That way if you dont have cable, you wont be left out.     It may not be that easy, but it would allow others to always be able to see your most updated info and you would only have to do one segment that covers both.

For the action weather plus channel maybe once in a while  there could be some mini special on "this day in weather history" in Kansas City that is seasonally applied.  Could be interesting if you can add raw live footage submitted by residents of KC from their front or backyards.  Amature footage of hail, lightning, ice, and snow during whichever big event would be neat to see.  Could possibly get the communities involved in the channel somehow to build a larger loyal viewer base.

Post live feed on the channel of Gary's school trips, wal-mart/other location weather team visits, and have some sort of traveling weather cam that could also be seen online.

THEN it would be REALLY neat to see some local hard core storm chasers send live feed to the channel and correspond with the weather team.  Now that could get intense in the spring/summer storm season.  Run contests and events to win a ride along on a storm chase with a crew.  I have always wanted to ride out and chase a storm with a group that knows where to find them and isnt afraid to get close.

Figure out a way to link the LRCWeather.com site to the channel to promote national exposure on the theory.

Gary,

About the new station, My idea is simple, but I think you should do special coverage of winter storms this time of year on it.. For example, when a snow or ice event is setting up across the viewing area, go into more in depth coverage on that station, that ordinarily you wouldn't interrupt regular programming for. Be interactive with the entire 2 state region... Do the same for severe weather events, show everyone where the boundaries are, where it will fire, give more coverage...

Just like the NBC ActionPlus, I hope this streams online too..

Gary, I always like to hear about the possibilities of upcoming storms, the things that are a little too iffy to put in the forecast.

By the way - I want to tell you how much I love reading your blog.  My father is a meterologist at NOAA in Boulder, and reading your excitement of snow and storms reminds me of home.  Thank you!

As for features on the new channel, maybe some kind of snow day-probability scale for the schools? Like 1= no chance of a snow day, 10= very likely, no guaruntees of course! Just something to guage the likelihood of a snow day, based on road conditions, morning temperatures, that sort of thing. I know that's geting into the waters of upsetting kids/parents, and that it doesn't really have anything to do with weather, but it would be cool to see. :D

I think all of these ideas are great just make sure when showing satellites make sure you throw in the water vapor imagery because it's SO IMPORTANT. and during daylight hours the visible. Infrared I could take or leave. another idea maybe show some 24 hour radar or satellite images as well. Thank you for letting us bloggers have some ideas!

In terms of the new channel, I like the idea of educational items. Can you do something similar to weather spotter training so that we all know what to look for with the spring storms.

Being a lover of pets like you (I have a dog and a cat), can you help educate people on the proper ice melt to use around pets. It's kind of weather related!

lol Chris its funny you should mention that... i looked on the main page for the weather.gov, and i saw pink in mississippi, looked at the key and freaked out when i saw Jackson, MS. is under a Winter Storm Warning! and Houston is currently 32 degrees with light snow, under a winter weather advisory! i love how one of the counties highlighted is even on the Gulf itself... i guess this storm really isnt finished... lol

and i also noticed that the Northeast is really getting hit too with the Ice Storm Warnings, and Winter Storm watches and warnings.... anyways

as for the blog i really like KansasPatriot's idea of every day maybe give some kind of information related to "THIS DAY IN HISTORY IN KANSAS CITY" or something... or give some kind of fact about KC climate. I also would maybe, if possible to have like the radar with some kind of freezing line to designate where it is snow and rain and ice in some situation (like the weather channel)... lol just throwing em out there :D

and twistedsisters, we are getting an update to our old action weather plus station, its in the blog entry :)

Kansas Patriot: What a great idea "some mini special on 'this day in weather history'! There is a weather station (that shall remain nameless) that has a show "When Weather Changed History." Certainly KC has had enough of those days to do some stories on them.
