Small snowstorm...December 16, 2008

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY TODAY!  Watch NBC Action News through 8 AM, the Today Show, and at 11 AM on our Midday show for the most accurate weather forecast.

It is a snowy Tuesday morning bloggers,

Snow has spread in and there is a large area continuing to develop with some heavy bands of snow.  Snow began around 3:30 AM, right when we thought it would start.  It takes the pressure off when it starts on time!  So, let's enjoy the snow and if you are traveling today try to give yourself an extra half hour or more so you are not in a rush.

There is a large area of snow across Kansas moving northeast into Missouri early this morning.  By early this afternoon most areas will have 2 to 3 inches of snow as the snow comes to an end.  A few locations may end up with 4 or 5 inches most likely north and northeast of Kansas City.

There is another storm approaching the area on Thursday and we will go into the details of this storm later today.  Sleet, freezing rain, rain, thunderstorms, and maybe even snow is possible with this storm #2!

Good beautiful, wonderfull, glorious snowy morning to you sir!! Currently sitting at 11 degrees with a fairly brisk NE wind and snow!!!! Yes, glorious snow!! It is just awesome out this morning-yea, the winds can still cut through you but man the snow falling, the snow crunching under your shoes-awesome!!!! we have already collected close to an 1/2 inch here in SW Lawrence-it is a very lite/powdery snow but man-it is a classic Kansas City Winter's day outside!! Yes, I ahve already spent an hour out in it!!!! LOL I am such an odd bird!!!

Radar (I think-I always wind up with egg on my face when it comes to radar!!) looks very good this morning as this stretches all the way back close to Dodge City. One thing-this kind of shot the gap-looking at the radar, there is not a lot of room for error.

Will be fun following this morning-I am giving my finals at 8:15 and then proctoring so I will have tons of grading to do but I why do I get the feeling I will be following radars and then giving a couple of boys rides on thier sleds behind my bike!!!LOL My oldest and I last night were discussinmg ways to try and make an igloo with 2-3 inches of powdery snow-you can imagine how this will turn out LOL!!

Thanks everybody for the kind words-it is greatly appreciated-I have always said this and I mean it-even a broken clock can have a ghost of a good idea twice a day!!! LOL

Have a great day everybody and Gary I really hope you get to get out and enjoy this today-take the dogs for a long long snowy walk-you deserve to enjoy the weather!!! (Maybe we can get Jeremy over to the dark side as he plays with his girls in the snow today LOL)

Here we go!!!!!

Bill in Lawrence

----------------------

Bill,

I already took Breezy and Stormy for a walk.  I will get anotther one in after I do this 980 AM KMBZ radio update at 5:39.  It's snowing and you correctly analyzed the error by the models days ago!  Good job.

Have a fantastic day. And, remember it isn't officially winter yet.

i agree with gary's earlier comment... get an early start and take it easy!! i got here (K7 & K10) about 5:25 this morning via Roe Ave. and I-435. Saw the crews out, and the freeway wasn't "horrible" at 5:15, but K10 wasn't very good and likely to get worse. The interchange at 435 and I-35 was not good - slushy and thick - bad spot for that. I can only imagine that it wil get worse.

be careful everyone. - mike

Hey Gary!! Do you think we might get to enjoy a white Christmas? :)

---------------

There is another cold blast coming in Saturday and Sunday so early next week there is a chance of snow.  But, will it be on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?  Right now the computer models warm it up a bit on those days, but let's see how it looks later in the week.

Thanks so much for the kind words-to be honest, you have to chuck it up to blind luck!!!

I guess it wouldn't be a real Bill in Lawrence blogging morning without a few random observations!!!

1. Looking at the 11Z surface data today: man there is some really cold air sitting up in the Northern Plains this morning-wow!! Man if this bit of energy had really formed into a closed system it would sure bring down some brutally cold air tomorrow!!

2. The surface high pressure I think is currently sitting over Southern Wisconsin-I think that really helped us out today as most models had that drifting into Central Ohio by this morning. Will be interesting to see ho far this thing drifts in the next 24 hours and if another one slides down a bit south.

3. That High has also began a pretty significant return flow to develop over the Western and Northern High Plains-Goodland, Kansas right now is reporting SE winds close to 20 MPH. (that windchill will get ya LOL) Will be interesting to watch tomorrow to see how much they warm up on the surface as I wonder if could be an indicator of how much we warm up Wednesday into Thursday

Just some random thoughts that I hope make sense and that I really shouldn't even have typed as today is today and it is snowing!!!! So why am I even thinking about later down the road-that is a really good question!! LOL Because I have become hooked again!!!

Have a great day-enjoy the walk Gary-I was out earlier this morning and as Will Ferril said about Blue in Old School-it was glorious!!! Dust in the Wind anybody??? I am going to so enjoy today!!

Just went out to get my paper here in Grandview - very light snow, very pretty coming down!  Speaking of schools out - why is it that the major districts in Missouri are closed but not in Kansas (Olathe, SM, KCKC, Blue Valley)  Is it really that much worse on the Missouri side?  am I missing something?  Not that I am complaining as I am a teacher on the MO side and love staying home with my wife and sons, but the question comes to mind . . . . . .

Weather Team-
I am an early riser and I almost always miss your 10pm forecast and I leave for work before the 5am news so I will check channel 1442 when I get up in the morning but here lately it seems like the local forecast has not been on there as much as it used to be.  Not complaining...just curious as I like to see what the day is going to bring weather wise and I don't even bother watching the other channels.  I do know that I can always rely on the blog...it is usually updated by the time I get to work or shortly thereafter.

Thanks for all your hard work...you are the best weather team by far!

Good Morning, All - coming down fast but with tiny flakes in Ottawa.
Jeremy, you said that Ottawa area should get around 3" but your weather graphic shows us getting 4.8" - what's up? Thanks, Channel 41 Weather Crew - you're the best!

**********************

Here's where you need to help us.  How much snow have you picked up so far?

On the news I've been saying that Powercast has 3-4" for some southern areas like Ottawa and Pleasanton, but I'm just wondering how far north the south part of snow line progresses north.  You are so close to the line that I mentioned if it reaches some of these areas totals will be less.  Keep in mind our forecast is 2-4" today.

I know my question probably wont get answered because it is about Thursday, but...if we get this precip that is possibly ice, etc., what time do you expect it to start for KC?

I ask this now, in the midst of this storm, because my stomach is hurting while I struggle with whether or not to go to work today.  I really, really dont want to, but I'm afraid of using all of my vacation in two weeks and having nothing the rest of the winter.  If the Thursday "event" were to start later, I might at least get a 1/2 day.

Thursday is really up in the air with temps so critical for precipitation type and start time.

Not the answer I wanted, Jeremy.  :)  Thanks... guess I'll just wait and pray for warmer temps.

Using the LRC, when do we expect this precip pattern to end?  Meaning, the fact that we are getting weather "events" every other day or so.  When can me possibly expect to see dryer weather for a "prolonged" period of time where we dont have to worry about whether it will snow/ice or not?

Town00, what part of Blue Springs are you at, N or S of the 40? I was just wondering because if you were not too far from me I could use your measurment as a guesstamint for me. All I know is that it is getting hard to see the line between the grass and the driveway. It is beginning to look like just one white surface.

My husband had to wake my youngest daughter up for school this morning. With in 3 minutes of him waking her up, the phone rang saying that there was no school. Poor kid got woken up only to be told to go back to sleep, must be rough! :-)

Also sorry Jeremy, I did not mean to violate a rule. I thought it was ok since it was the NWS.
