A few heavier snow bands are forming

Good morning bloggers,

Here is your 7 AM update on the snowstorm moving through.  There are many school closings and we are staying on the air through 8 AM to keep you updated on NBC Action News.  Travel conditions are worsening this hour.  But, you will be able to get around.  If you are going to work or must travel this morning try to leave 30 minutes early as it will take a little extra time to get around.  Snowfall rates have increased during the 6 AM hour and some heavier bands of snow are now developing.  Take a look at the radar at 6:30 AM:

And, it is cold.  Look at the surface map from 6 AM this morning.  It  is in the teens all the way into north Texas this morning. This cold air mass will have a hard time being moved out by our next storm due in Thursday.  We will talk about this next storm system later today.

We are expecting 2 to 4 inches of snow from this storm system in most areas.  Your participation in the NBC Action Weather Blog is very much appreciated.  Later today we would love to have your snowfall totals as we prepare our graphics for the weathercasts on NBC Action News.  Meteorologist Jeremy Nelson will be going into the final stages of this storm at 11 AM this morning and then Jeff Penner and I will have complete details on this storm, storm #2, and another Arctic blast due in this weekend on our weathercasts at 5, 6, and 10 PM.  Meteorologist Brett Anthony is off this week.

Have a safe and great day! Look at the wild ride of weather that continues on the blog at www.LRCWeather.com

snowing heavy in Liberty and the streets are packed & getting a little slippery.  An old timer always told me that on the date we get the first inch we would have that many snows.  For instance the first inch on the 9th meant 9 snows of 1 inch or more.  Looks like we might make that this year!

Does this mean that you are hoping for more snow than freezing rain and sleet?  I am praying for more snow.  Dealt with last year's ice storm and not ready for another one.

Looks like the back end of the snow is RAPIDLY approaching Emporia - should be over in the metro (tapering off to flurries) by around 10:15-11:00 AM or so. Maybe another inch of accumulation between now and then tops.

An inch tops?  That's a pretty good band in Miami and Franklin counties.

Based on radar trends you may see 1-2".  Looks like the southern areas are going to be around 2", metro 2.5-3.5", and north 3.5"+.

One reason for extending the coverage is because this type of weather affects the traffic.  I just looked at the traffic maps on some of the local websites and see over 10 wrecks that have been reported, many with injuries and one involving a school bus.  On days like this, the list does not include all of the small wrecks.  I'm glad I can work from home today vs making my normal 30+ mile drive across town.

I must be getting old.  I remember going to high school back in the late 80's in Illinois and driving to school with a few years of driving experience in snow much heavier and deeper than this with no problem. Just drive slow, no quick moves and space between your vehicle and others.

I think it is very smart for schools that didn't cancel today.  They just might need it if we get ice storms in the future.  Told my first grader how lucky he is to hopefully not have to go to school for any additional days in the early summer because of unnecessary snow days.  Education comes first especially with 2-3 inches of snow.

Would never think of keeping my kids home from school if it wasn't cancelled.. I guess tomato - tamaato...

Radar shows heaviest stuff in Jackson County over to Johnson County (KS side) moving ENE out of here.  I don't see much redevelopment to the SW.  After this moves out, could this be it?

Missouri schools are paid money by the state according to attendance that they report.  When there is bad weather, a lot of parents keep their kids home and their attendance drops below 90% and that is not good.  They will cancel school every time due to this fact.

Agree with you Marlina10.  I can clearly recall in 6th grade that 6-8 inches of snow had fallen and we still went to school (This is in KC - back in 1989, showing my age here) but they did finally let us out around noon.

Problem is, people are just too sue happy.  If your kid gets hurt at school, lawsuit.  Schools just don't want to be liable and would rather just have kids stay at home and make it up in June.

Its still coming down at a pretty good clip. Looks like it should end within the next 1-2 hours here, as the main band lifts north.

For Thursday, still not looking like a major ice event. I still strongly feel that with the strength of this sysytem, the warm air will win out.

EAX is going for a high of 41 for Lee's Summit, and then has the following to say in there morning AFD...

STILL GOING LIKELY WITH FREEZING RAIN STARTING THURSDAY MORNING
TRANSITIONING TO RAIN SOUTH OF HIGHWAY 36 IN THE AFTERNOON AS
TEMPERATURES WARM ABOVE FREEZING.

Any problems that would occur in the morning would be gone by afternoon.

I see you guys have dropped your high temp to 34.

Gary,
I am looking at the latest NAM. The thursday storm looks to have a negitive tilt. Which means it will have more lift and strength. Does this affect it's ability to force the warm air back into KC? Also, the models have been showing a slight trend to where the Low will be when it passes by KC. it now looks like the vort max would be right over KC, as to where a few days ago it was way into nebraska. I think the models are finnally begining to work the cold air into the region. Just some ameteur ramblings. ryan in 2.5'' of snow so far chillicothe

It's the weather pattern setting up for late Wednesday night and all day Thursday that will be the one to watch. If this system holds together, and stays consistant, I'd say it will be a major ice event.

Yeah it was funny Jeremy.  I find humor in some of the smallest things.  I know it can't be fun for you guys getting up as early as you all do to provide the information for us. Thank you for that. While most of us can get disapointed in the lack of snow sometimes, while others get their fair share.  It's the memories of being a kid and wishing for that snow day that keep the child in all of us alive, as we work through those complicated things in our adult lives.  I hope that made sense.

While this system was a very average producer, we all appreciate what the NBC weather team does to keep us advised no matter how trivial it may be.  Thanks for your efforts.

The snow has slowed A LOT downtown.  Is this the end of the snow for today?

I teach at a charter school downtown - and had about 1/3 of my kids gone yesterday (I think between the cold and some bus troubles).  I guess that's a good reason to cancel school on a day like this.  I'm sure attendance would have been even worse.

it's about done snowing in Liberty & now the schools close 2 hours early so the kids can ride home on roads that aren't cleared yet...if they had closed at regular time the roads would have had a chance to be cleared.  Makes no sense.  Am I missing another part to this storm?  Is more stuff coming this afternoon.

Hi All -

Just finished shoveling my sidewalks and driveway (aaugh!) - just north of the river in Ottawa got 2 1/2 to 3 inches of light fluffy snow. Looks like there's still some very light snow coming down (as well as blowing snow also). Wow! Seems like December has had rough going the last few years...

I was surprised we didn't have a school day here in southern JoCo, KS but am now thankful-we'd have to make it up, and it has died down to a little spitty type of snow.  I'd rather save it in case we need it for Thursday...

Everyone---

Remember when measuring the snow today be sure to remember we still had some ground from the last snow. Subtract the amount still left on the ground from the total snow to get an accurate measurement (or if your like me, you shoveled off part of the driveway last night before today's snow started)!

Erin,

Not to sound like the woman on the other channel, but there is a system to the south that appears to have alot of gulf moisture in it. If this system holds together on Wednesday night and into Thursday, we will have enough moisture in the air for freezing rain. The temps will be just above freezing. and the ground is cold enough for the precip in the form of freezing rain to freeze on contact.  So be on the lookout for freezing rain in the morning, and then a mix of rain and freezing rain throughout the afternoon.  This should  change back over nothing but freezing rain in the late afternoon and into the evening hours and temps will drop again from the approaching second air mas from the north.  Your comute from home should be a mess expeically on overpasses. But it all depends on the levels of moisture in the air and how fast the artic air mass gets here.  It's tricky.  But please remember, it's Kansas weather.  It can and will change in just a matter of a couple hours, for the better or worse.  It's always best to just be prepared.

Not to be confused with end of the world "Storm of the Century", attitude that some of the other channels conform to for ratings andshock value. It's funny,.. on their newscasts, look at who their pais their bills during commercial breaks.  Most of the time it's walmart and a local grocery store, like Price Chopper, Sunfresh and Hyvee.  Then she comes on and says go get stocked oup on shovels, icemelt, and canned goods just incase you loose power.  Interesting how the you srcatch my back I'll scratch yours, is relevant in that dynamic, isn't it?  You never thought that a weather could be such a profitable business, did you?

************************

If I keep forecasting super cold temps does that mean a travel agent will hook me up with a trip to a warm location because of all the business I'm sending their way:)

If the free trip doesn't pan out Jeremy, then at least you'll get a nice promotional pen or day planner..lol   I'd love to see the promotional items the other channels  have in their desks. The Price Chopper and hyvee calenders they have intheir cubes.  lol.. Wouln't that be funny to be able to zoom in on the "prop pen" they pretend to use in their newscasts, only to see it has Hyvee written on it...lol   CONSPIRACY!!!!..lol
