Freezing rain advisory...update

Good evening bloggers,

We are getting ready for the 5 and 6 PM newscasts on NBC Action News.  A FREEZING RAIN ADVISORY is likely going to be issued at any moment for Thursday.

Well, the FREEZING RAIN ADVISORY has been issued and in effect Thursday.  We expect freezing rain to start shortly after the AM rush hour.  Will we warm above 32?  It looks worse near the Iowa border.  We are still analyzing this very complex weather situation.  Watch at 6 and 10 PM, also we will be updating the blog tonitght for the latest information.

LOL...what a nasty little storm to forecast.  What will happen with the shallow cold air?  That is the million dollar question.  I wish I knew, but alas...I don't.  Good luck Gary and the weather team.  I believe this is one of those no win situations.

Is freezing rain advisory mean an ice storm? Or just surfaces will get coated with a thin layer of ice? I won't be able to see the news cast since I am at work. Can someone share what Gary says about the ice potential and if he thinks severe power outages may occur.

My farm is total electric and I depend on it to keep stock tanks and heated water buckets from freezing not to mention my family warm.

i made that observation a few hours ago,  that has been the curent trend in the past 48 hours, the forcasts have consistantly been about 9-6 degrees off.  any normal day, we wouldn't think twice about questioning this.  however with the current situation, that is night and day , a huge difference.

my thoughts are that, by this evening there will be yet another change with the forcase and the models showing some positive signs of the metro area getting into a more dangerous situation. I have a hard time believing that the temps will get over 29-32 degrees for tomrrow.  today the highs were supposed to be in the mid 20's the high for today here in op was 18 deg.

The funny thing about Pleasant hill NWS is that they are keeping the wording of "no ice accumulation" thats a pretty bold statement at this point. I think that is pretty hard to forecast at this point since there are still uncertainties regarding temp and qpf. I think the have no clue as to if they should issue a freezing rain advisory or an Ice storm warning since the northern counties will border the current Ice storm waring issues for southern Iowa. Things have trended south since the Ice storm warning was issued in Iowa.

It will be interesting to watch what happens -- I do not think that getting above freezing is all that unlikely but the real question is if the conditions will remain favorable as the models predict. Here in stilwell the temps today rose to 24.5 (higher than predicted) so maybe there is hope if temperatures stay around 18 to 20 degrees or start rising after 10 then our chances are improving. We will know in the morning.

Farmgirl - how come and you do not have a back up plan for heating and power? I grew up in a farm and we had backups (natural gas) for both lighting and heat.

Ha :)  I have a tape of Gary when he worked at Channel 4 from June 1994.... He got way excited then and showed passion and its great to see how he's advanced since then and seems to have done well, especially considering his rare form of cancer he had and now he looks really great.

My thoughts on the ice storm (or maybe no ice storm) is the same as everyone else's. This is a very complicated situation where literally forecasting a degree or 2 is going to make a huge difference. I'm glad Im in Wichita now because I think we will be too warm mostly except early in the morning

------------------

JBtornado,

Thank you so much!  1994, that's crazy.  I had hair then.  Anyway, this is a very tough forecast.  There isn't anyone who really knows exactly what will happen.  I am going to make a point on the air that we give the 3 degree Warranty.  It is difficult to get within 3 every day.  Our forecast is off by around 2 degrees on average.  So, tomorrows situation is one where if you are off by one degree there could be a more significant ice storm, not to mention the other problems to this forecast.

Gary is forecasting 32 tomorrow.  So that is borderline.  And as the warm rain comes down it will warm the air around it like it did last year for us on the south side.  So it will probably be nothing for us down here.  It already warmed up more than they said today. I think the high here was 24.  So it could very easy get to above freezing, at least on the south side of town.  I hope so. I love the ice because it is so pretty, but I do not want an ice storm.  To much destruction to make the pretty be worth it. If it happens I will make the best of it and enjoy the prettiness, but lets just hope it does not happen.  Although I have to admit I am excited.  I do not know why.  I think I just love all weather and the excitement of it all. I am terrified of tornadoes, but I love that time of year.  I may be scared of them but I also have great respect for the beauty of a twister.  I would love to see one someday. I am a true weather addict. LOL

If we break the 32 mark and go above, there's gonna be some slushy roads out there folks.

I think the good thing is when the temp is near freezing and chemicals are dropped they are more effective, however as the freezing rain turns to rain those chemicals get washed away.

I agree with FlakeFan, Icing is a great sight, especially if it's a glazing on trees and you have a sunny day afterwards, it looks awesome in the morning. Do I like damaging ice... nope, and I feel for those who may get it tomorrow.

If we can get some radiant heat going to keep the temps up we may have a better shot of more rain tomorrow, it would be nice to see if start after morning rush hour (in my case around 0500) and be done to all rain by evening rush hour (about 1600 in my case)

I hope we have a fluke and most viewers miss it...

Gary & Co... Nice job on this pain of a week to forecast. Hopefully things will get less wild and give everyone a breather after Christmas... :)

hey Gary and all-  I posted before the Tuesday snow so my post got washed away in the excitement.  So anyways...I have a flight tomorrow at 7pm to go back to California.  Should I be worried about delays out of KCI?  Or even cancellations?  Let alone I have to drive from Lawrence to KCI.

Thanks!

Not so near to you, but here on 63rd st, near Shawnee Mission Parkway, we've been hovering around 19f for quite a while, in fact, it may even have raised 1f...

*Sigh*  Looks like I'll get the daughter to school tomorrow for finals and then about the time I have to leave home to go get her at 11:00, we'll be having some lovely weather...  don't think the snow tires will do much good with frozen precipitation.  Wishing it was August- for once.  Dea

I am at 21.0 now.  I guess it's fine.  If it is off, it's only off by a degree or 2. Normally it would not matter but as tomorrow approaches every degree counts.  Thanks everyone.
