Las Vegas snow....dry here tonight

Good evening bloggers,

Las Vegas, NV has heavy snow tonight.  The NWS office in Las Vegas has recorded 3.6" of snow!  So in the past two weeks it has snowed in New Orleans, Houston, and Las Vegas.  You don't think this is a strange weather pattern?  And according to the LRC this will be repeating on schedule every 50 days or so.  We will be dry all night, but what about Thursday?

We are going to have another very interesting day of weather Thursday.  A storm now over Southern California will be racing our way on Thursday morning.  A surface low will develop over Kansas Thursday and it will try to pull warmer air into our region.  The warmer surge of air will be limited along and north of the surface lows path.  There is a warm front that will be lifting north.  Look at the forecast map that I made for Thursday night:

It will be dry tonight through the morning rush hour.  This is such a challenging forecast.  It is forecast to be 43 degrees at arond 5,000 feet above the surface.  As rain starts falling some of this warmer air will work its way down to the ground. This is one of the reasons why temperatures will slowly rise, hopefully to above freezing by evening.  Some areas may stay below freezing when the heavier rain develops. Thunderstorms are also possible Thursday evening.  Right now we expect it to stay dry through the morning rush hour and then we will be watching closely for developing precipitation.  This doesn't rule out the potential for some freezing drizzle of snow grains in the morning.  The models won't pick up on this very light precipitation.

So, some ice accumulation is possible on Thursday afternoon and evening. This storm should end Thursday night before any major ice storm develops.

Then, we focus our attention on Saturday.  This is just fascinating, don't you think?  Wow!  This is an unusual Arctic front and blast that will arrive by Saturday evening.  There could be some snow at times beginning Saturday night into Sunday, but the Arctic front is so strong by Sunday that only very light snow would be likely during the Chiefs game with 20-30 below zero wind chill factors.

Look at this map, above.  This front is coming in from the northwest and the air behind this front will likely get down to 30 below zero across Montana and the Dakota's....OUCH!

Watch our newscast at 10 PM.  And, then Jeremy will get you updated in the morning with his thoughts beginning at 5 AM on NBC Action News.

It's going to be a big struggle to get temps above freezing especially north of I70. I see 32 and thats the highest I believe the nws will issue the ice storm warning a tier of counties to the south I believe St. Joseph will be included this is just my gut feeling and believe me I'm not an expert just an opinion and I dont wish an ice storm for no one.

one quick note at least the winds will not be as strong as they could be during this event if we do get ice on powerlines and limbs it will be up to 15 mph at the most according to nws I've seen winds stronger than that during an ice storm so maybe that will not be bad.

Gary-

I'm not too sure that we'll make it above 32 tomorrow. It got pretty clear over Lawrence right as the sun went down and you could just feel the temperatures plummet. I know it's clouded back up now, but I just don't think it's thick enough to keep our temps that warm. Depending on how early the precip does start (especially if that freezing drizzle comes in tonight like NWS Topeka is saying) then I'm think we most likely won't make it above freezing. You mentioned on a previous blog that this setup was much like one 45 days ago. How did the temps react on those days?

Thanks for all your work!

I'm a little nervous about what tomorrow will bring. It only reached 17 for a high today and we are now down to 11 up in St. Joseph. I think originally this morning it was forcasted to get up to 22, but it didn't happened. I wonder how this will play into tomorrow? The fact that St. Joseph is on the border between andrew and buchanan county puts us in a iffy scenario. I pray if we have freezing rain, its just a small enough of an amount to glaze things and not cause the disaster it did last year.   *fingers crossed*

I'm gonna stick with my guns here.  I think the temp goes above freezing by noon tomorrow at the latest along the I-70 corridor.

The 00Z (6:00PM) soundings had Topeka (where I live) at 39F at 850mb (5,000 ft) and Springfield at 55F degrees at the same level!  The warm air will continue moving north (i.e WAA).  The precip tomorrow will mix the warm air down to the surface and the temp will go above freezing and maybe rather quickly.  The temp at my house is already beginning to creep upwards from 16.2F at 7PM to 17.8 now.

I do not think Topeka-KC will see any major ice problems.  Now if I'm wrong and we get a big ice storm - well, sorry 'bout that!  ;)  Mike

How are you doing?  Yes, I think it will be below freezing.  But, when will the rain develop. If nothing falls from the sky you can't have freezing rain.  I think rain will develop later in the morning or afternoon.  I am just not certain of the start time yet.

It is cold!  Did everyone see that I updated the blog with some maps, etc.

One interesting observation is that the NWS Wichita has issued their freezing rain advisory until 3:00 pm.  NWS in Pleasant Hill has issued their freezing rain advisory until 12:00 pm.  So, there is some uncertainty among the NWS office as to the duration of the event.  If you believe Wichita, I would assume that the event would not end in KC until at least a couple of hours after Wichita.  At the very least, travel should be no fun in KC tomorrow.

Gary I just have to ask a couple of questions here.  They say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, so I guess they get to keep the snow.  But just because air temp might rise doesn't that mean just that and nothing else?  I mean the sleet may turn to rain, but as it hits the ground the ground surface temp will still be below freezing right?  So the power lines and trees will be ok, they are up off the ground and in warmer air.  But the ground is frozen a few inches down and even 6 hours of falling rain and rising temps won't thaw it out.  Now maybe in the city your treated streets might be ok at least on the major roads because of heavier traffic.  But out in the rural area we will still be slipping and sliding.  These are just my basic thoughts and after several ice events over the last several years has made most of us outside the city limits a little wary and most of us tend to be over prepared rather than put our faith into any weather forecast.  Nothing personal but its better to be prepared and just a little more comfortable than it is to wish we were ready and be suffering without electricity and/or heat and water.

Andrew,

I have also tried that several times, and doing that does not work for me either.

I have not been able to access the live chat with any success.

Gary,

Is the reason this is going to be freezing rain tomorrow and now snow is because it is pulling southern warm air into the mix?

Why are people using their gut as a forecasting tool and making everybody else think and contradict when they shouldn't have to. That's why they make maps and models, which I know aren't always correct, but I will trust models or the forecast of Gary Lezak more than someone's gut any day of the week, especially the night before. As Gary said, Ice storms are probably the hardest event to forecast so saying you have a "feeling" it is or isn't going to get above freezing is just dumb. Also. Saying for a fact it's going to be worse north of here is not smart either. There is too much uncertainty to go around making your own forecasts. i'm sorry i'm in a bad mood and I have low tolerance right now for "gut feelings".

Gary, I love the new weather page and I liked your forecast.

Monica,
It's not unusual to have fog with the snow on the ground.  It is the warm air moving over the cold air at the surface.  Don't quote me on that tho. :)

Jonathan,
You should know me by now...  Sometimes my instinct just knows.  It is something that I can never explain.

First time poster!

I'm a huge weather freak and I am just fascinated by it. My dad sent me this page and I check it just about a fifty times a day! The new site is fantastic!

I am just worried about the people up north. If they do get a big ice storm and lose power, just think about this weekend when the other Arctic blast is going to come in and bring -20 to -30 degree wind chills! That is so dangerous! I hope they all will be okay!

NWS in Topeka has lowered their expected temps for tomorrow in Lawrence. It earlier said 39 for Thurs. evening, now it's 33. A sign of things to come?

Meanwhile, the temp here has risen 4 degrees since my last post.
