Precipitation Moving Closer

Watch NBC Action News HD from 11 a.m. to Noon as we track freezing rain on LIVE:ESP

Here is a radar image and the warming temperatures as of 11 AM:

Here's a quick update.  Gary will be adding thoughts early this afternoon.  A band of freezing rain and freezing drizzle is advancing northeast.  It is just entering our southern counties of Anderson and Linn.  As this band continues moving northeast our temperatures will be nearing 30 degrees by early to mid afternoon.  As I write it is already 27 in Olathe.  This band will move through Kansas City by 2-3 p.m. and likely produce some freezing rain.  Areas of greatest concern will be elevated north facing location, bridge decks, overpasses, on/off ramps, and snow covered areas.  These spots will likely ice up first.

There will likely be more bands of precipitation after the first one arrives since the main storm is still to the west of our region.  Please report freezing rain or icy conditions to us to pass along to bloggers and also our newsroom.  Temperatures should warm to 32 by late afternoon or in the evening in KC with the potential to reach a couple of degrees above that too.

Farther to the north where Ice Storm Warnings are in effect the freezing rain will begin after 3 p.m. and continue well into the evening.  Ice accumulations will be up to 0.25" in the warning area, with the greatest amount in the areas near the Iowa border.

Also, please check out our new weather page and radar tracking technology.  I think you will love it!  Please watch NBC Action News all day long for the latest weather updates!

Good Morning everyone!
I was just at I-HOP here in Lee's Summit for my work holiday breakfast and it was snowing!  It was a very, very light snow, and didn't accumulate on anything.  It only lasted about 20 minutes.
Just thought I would pass that along.
Have a great day and everyone be safe!

Pilot, this goes on every year whenever a storm potential exists. Most of those who post the desire for those events are young...teens to very early 20's. Unless it gets hateful they won't be removed from here and the one you refer to currently, well he's been on for a long time. Ya kinda have to accept the stupidity of calling for catastrophies or the potential for it as the norm during winter and tornado season. And if ya complain then sometimes you get bashed by others for complaining about it because of this being a place for weather lovers and that they are entitled to get excited about bad weather.

Come on people, give Andrew a break.  He is an outstanding contributor to this blog and he is sharing his opinion on what weather event he prefers.  Which happens to be an opinion shared by many on this blog.  Does anyone ever want to see any situation that could cause damage to person or property? NO.  But, snow, ice, wind, tornado, thuderstorms, heat can all be dangerous situations, but no jumps on people that get excited for thunderstorms or a 90 degree day.  Its all apart of weather.  It's those situations that make the weather interesting.  This is a weather blog and should be free to express our opinions on the weather!

Just my two-cents before I head back to work...

One of the most amazing things about being a person is the ability to ignore the comments of others.  I still wonder why we spend so much time on this blog talking to those and about those who state their opinions that may clash with our own...these conversations take away from the important conversation of weather.

As a long-time reader of the KSHB blog, I have noticed several people who just don't post any more, and many of them probably stopped due to the inappropriate, lengthy, and often off-topic banter that takes places

Again, if you don't agree with the post of someone wishing for winter weather (snow, ice, etc) don't comment.  If you don't agree with someone wishing for warmer weather (which seems to be a lot more bloggers this week) than ignore the comment.

By doing so, all of us can focus on what is important here...weather!

Well I'm not too worried abou what's coming in now.  I see at the JCCC weather station from Stormwatch that the temp rose from 25.5 @ 10:20am to 28.1 @ 11:20am.  Figure it will be almost be above freezing by the time the rain arrives.  Of course that still doesn't mean the evening rush hour will be good.  Only takes a few ignorant and over zealous drivers to cause problems.

So what we know is that freezing rain will enter the metro area around 2:00.  What we don't know is exactly how this will affect traffic, especially during rush hour.

So...opinions...If it's do-able (and it is for me) would you leave work early to be home before 2:00?  Perhaps even picking up the kids from school?

I'm just having a hard time grasping how bad this is actually going to get, or if it is at all.

Opinions?

and right now I don't even think we are going to get anything close to an ice storm...maybe a little bit of glazing...and thats if these stupid temperatures don't stop going up. lol

On one of the blog entries yesterday I said,

"I'm gonna stick with my guns here.  I think the temp goes above freezing by noon tomorrow at the latest along the I-70 corridor...I do not think Topeka-KC will see any major ice problems..."

The temps are around 30 degrees right now in many areas along I-70 so it has just about made it to freezing. These temps are already too warm for a "real" ice storm. I continue to see this as a mainly rain event for Topeka-KC and, if so, I'm happy about that. I hate ice storms. Up north maybe a different story.

I just wish we could get a good blizzard stirred up around here... ;)

You are correct, the temp has fluctuated a little bit over the last 30 mins or so at the weather station. I kind of wonder if it may be getting a little influence from the snowfall on the ground? But at that same time this thing is about 18 feet off of the ground, so I wouldn’t think it would be that influenced that far up either. But good call on that!

As it moves in it will grow, remember the main event is from 7 pm to 2 am overnite for up here...24.4 and hanging tough.  The ground is OH so cold remember.  Put water in the snow and it is crusty snow with more moisture making it harder to melt.  Add an inch or two Sat then an inch or two on Tuesday and St Joe for sure has two white Christmases in a row last 22 December we got 8 inches.

I think I have my program set to update it every 1 second, so its another good way to get a nice live feed of information. Also, there is a program called Weather Exchange (kind of like weatherbug) but you can see all the weather stations on it that are on Wunderground, that would put the temp and stuff near your desktop. Also updates with Warnings, Advisories and other information. You might want to check that out as well.

Coming from the foothills (8600') of Colorado, I love the snow, but hate the ice! We don't have a clue about snowfall here! I averaged about 110" per year for the 15 years I lived there. Only had 3 months per year(June, July and August) when we didn't get measurable snowfall.  2003 had the biggest snowfall in a single storm in the last 100 years - 7 feet in two days!! Sounds like that would satisfy Andrew!
