First band of freezing rain

Good afternoon bloggers,

The first band of freezing rain will move across the viewing area during the next two to three hours.  After this band moves by new bands of freezing rain and rain will be developing and moving northeast.  Temperatures are rising but still below freezing in most spots.  Trees and snow or slushy surfaces will ice up first.  The main roads should have very minimal problems and likely just be wet with these first bands.

We will be tracking the rising temperatures and updating the blog around 4 PM.  Check back in then and be sure to watch NBC Action News at 5, 6, and 10 PM.

Gary

Good afternoon Gary!

Here in Stilwell the temperatures reached a "warm" 36.6 but now are dropping rather quickly and now we are at 33.8 degrees does that go against the model?

Thanks!

Temps aren't really dropping. Home thermometers may have been measuring a little high earlier and are now coming back to being more accurate. I noticed that the clouds were pretty thin for a while, and even a little sunlight coming through the clouds and reflecting off the snow can cause thermometers to measure too high.

Temps have briefly  dropped to 32 in OP.... I suspect once the rain starts, it will help warm us up a few more degrees.   This was suppose to happen from the beginning.   The only difference is the precip did not start as early or heavy as expected while our temps were below freezing.   Up north will be a different story when the storm gets going and the main band moves through tonight.

RDub,

What makes you think that thermometers (home or otherwise) were reading high but now are accurate? This statement makes very little sense.
December 18, 2008 1:54 PM

RDub said:

Home thermometers are very sensitive to the effects of sunlight if they are not well shielded. Many of them aren't, like mine. I notice that even filtered sunlight can cause the measured temperature to rise on my home thermometer. During the late morning the clouds were very thin and some sunlight was coming through. Now, as the clouds have thickened with the storm finally approaching, less sunlight is coming through.

If you look at the airport reporting stations, none of them have shown a drop in temperature, while many of the home stations have.

RDub,

You are  correct that placement is very important and high temperatures can be erroneous - however as a Pilot I not only use good equipment but also have it correctly positioned - I am quite confident in my readings withing the error of the machine (+/_ 1 degree). Not sure how to explain the temperature change but it was not artificial (in fact I have two different stations and they recorded with 0.1 degrees).

Thank you for the clarification - indeed a very good point.

Pilot, maybe there was some evaporative cooling happening? That is the only explanation I can think of.
December 18, 2008 2:20 PM

JayhawkRick said:

Could that cooling be due to evaporation?  As I understand it when precip falls and evaporates it releases some energy.  This energy release causes the atmosphere to cool until it becomes saturated or the precip picks up in intensity and can translate the warm air aloft to the surface.  Temperatures typically fall at the onset of precip...  Just a thought...

Possible ( suppose one of the two sensors is under the deck, far from any snow or window and shielded from wind - precipitation - or sunshine. Have always felt confident that it read as accurately as possible - this might be one for the books! :)

Thanks for the discussion.

Rain here in Stilwell - very light no icing on anything including my stainless steel grill that tends to ice up when I look at it the wrong way! :)

Do we think the event will be done by six? I see bands of precipitation south that might indicate a more prolonged event.

From what I remember from my Atmospheric Science course, when precipitation begins to fall, evaporative cooling occurs, dropping the temperature toward the dewpoint (and wet-bulb temperature) as the humidity increases.

However, currently there is a very warm air mass overhead and I believe that if the precipitation comes down a bit more heavily, that warm air will be pulled down with it, thus increasing the temperature once more. I'm not as sure about this speculation.

The temp dropped here in Lawrence from 32.9 to 32.1 after a brief rain shower. I am a "selfish ice-storm lover" like Andrew et al. (my fondest memories as a child were ice storms and the "October Surprise" snowstorm), so I'm a bit bummed that the low will track north of here. On the bright side, at least I will get my last final in tomorrow so I don't have to take it after Winter Break. ...Oh, and the elderly won't suffer terrible life-threatening injuries. That's a plus. :)

You want the sensor away from any influence (that includes house vents) for the mist accurate reading. In general wind is not an issue unless the atmosphere is loaded with humidity. So just shielding the sensor form the sun should be good.

I wonder where in Lee's Summit there was rain at 2:15? I did not notice any here near the corner of Colbern Road and the 7. Also the temp at the Lee's Summit airport is currently 30 degrees with a high for the day of 30 degrees. So the temp does not appear to dropping.

If this storm does wimp out it will be interesting. It will be the second storm from CA that my family in CA has said was a really strong storm for them and it was anything but for us.

If a storm expends a bunch of it's energy in CA, does it have a hard time recovering the lost energy before it reaches us?

On the subject of shielding, it's harder than it seems. "Official" measuring stations come with a box that has slots to allow air movement while shielding the sensor from the sun. http://www.srh.noaa.gov/tlh/cpm/crs_page.html

Mine is much simpler. I put it on the north side of a garage but it still is influenced by sunlight, even in the winter. For example, it was reading 25 yesterday when most stations were reporting 18-20.
