A warmer surge of air is developing

Good evening bloggers,

8 PM temperatures:

  • KCI:  31
  • Downtown, KC:  34
  • Olathe:  33
  • St. Joseph:  28

There is an ice storm over northern Missouri. It shouldn't become a major ice storm as a dry slot is heading our way.  There still could end up around 1/2 inch ice accumulations north of a St. Joseph to Chillicothe line.  Ice has also accumulated across northern portions of the Kansas City metro area, but temperatures are warming.

A warm surge of air seems to be developing as the surface low moves across western Kansas.  This will bring temperatures to above freezing over most of the KC metro area within hours and help tremendously in the areas where ice has formed.  Some spots may warm into the 40s after midnight.  After the surface low moves into Missouri and out of here later tonight the winds will shift to the north and temperatures will again drop below freezing during the morning on Friday.

This will be a very interesting 10 PM weathercast.  Be careful out there.  We will be doing a live cut-in on your NBC Action News station just after 8:30 PM.

Gary

Gary,

Good Evening Sir from Kansas City, Kansas. Currently we are now sitting at 32 with a moderate rain coming down, have ice covering everything outside at the moment, but would imagine that by 9 P.M. or so we will be melting a lot of that off with the warm air that is poised and ready to make an assult on the Kansas City area.

By the way...what happened to the snowfall that was forecast for the weekend? All the sudden the 7 day looks very boring? I thought it would stay busy at least for the upcoming week.

Gary still no real warm up here in McLouth.  At 7:30 it was 28.7, now it is 28.9 pressure is still falling currently at 29.82 and our winds have gone calm.  We are roughly 300' to 500' higher than all of you, how much difference do you think that might make?  Down in Topeka and Lawrence they have hit 32, but they have been there since well before sundown.  Warmest ever got here today was 29.4 at 2:30PM.  So I guess we will wait and see.  We still have freezing drizzle that isn't showing up on radar.

Good call on the warming...it does appear that most of the area will get above 32 pretty soon...

The drizzle we got here was just enough to glaze most elevated surfaces, but only wet the snow (rather than turning it into crunchy ice) - just enough moisture added to that dry, fluffy snow to make it more packable so that we were able to make our first snowman of the year.

don't mean to be rude but last year was not a fun experience for anyone living up here unless you were the lucky few to not lose power...I am praying for those in the northeast that may still be out of power after their ice storm

I remember the ice storm we had here on the south side a few years ago.  It must have been 2002 or 2003 maybe.  I'm sure someone here knows the year.  We were without power for 4 or 5 days, had to go stay with my dad in Belton who had a fire place just so we could stay warm.  I lost all my fish.  :(    Some had to go without power longer than that.  It really does suck and not something I wish on anyone ever but especially the week before Christmas and even more so now as it is going to get deadly cold this weekend.

stjoemom  I feel for ya.  Hang in there, maybe it wont be that bad this time.  ((((hugs))))

Some folks just like the excitement of it all and most of them just want out of school or work anyways.  :)   They are not wishing for destruction though.

Radar trends have had the bulk of the precipitation from this storm system across areas to our south, but the temperatures are much warmer there. If it was colder there, than the bulk of ice accumulation would be across the ozarks and up in southern Iowa.

I'll cheer for winter weather after the holidays, but I'm hoping for a respite for the next week to allow for easier travel.

We were originally planning to drive up to Minnesota Sunday, but the southern-half of the state is supposed to get at least a foot of snow between now and then.

Our backup date was Tuesday night, but it looks like there might be snow around KC that day.

To tie that into our weather situation - even though our cold air was pushed north today, it doesn't seem like the cold is going to be gone for long.

I say that because with the weather events just a few hundred miles to our north, I assume that weather would have drifted southward if not for today's warm air coming in from the south? (though I suppose the bad weather to the north of here is only able to produce that weather because of the warm air and gulf moisture...)

Temps haven't budged for a while now, still at 48.4, but I just noticed that the sky is suddenly perfectly clear. Wasn't expecting that either. Oh, and I just noticed that Wichita's temp has tanked from 48 down to 37, so the cold front is on the move now!

I wonder if the cold front is strong enough to overtake the warm air to be a true occluded front...  Any thoughts?

Its amazing, almost all of our snow is gone now. Just a couple of hours ago our yard was completely white! Temps fallen back to 47.5, and the wind has picked up now. Andrew, I see your weather station, were you trying to post something else? Because you said here is the front.

I live in Hutchinson and at 7:00 PM we had 3 inches of snow on the ground. By 11PM almost all the snow had melted from the yards and all the side streets that were snowpacked were virtually dry!

Okay, ya that makes more sense! Lol, I see you temps are dropping now too. I have to admit, as much as I didn't want the snow to melt, it was pretty cool to see the temps go up that fast, and now fall again. Wind sure is howling now!! Cold air is surging back in!

DWX,

I went to sleep around 11:30 and shortly thereafter the winds came up and were so strong that the fence was shaking and our swing had toppled over. A real crazy weather night!
