Watch NBC Action News HD this morning from 5-7 a.m. for the latest on our quickly changing weather and the weekend forecast!
A quick update for everyone this morning. Warmer air surged north overnight and temperatures made it into the low 50s in Downtown KC, Olathe, and other parts of the viewing area. The mild air, patchy fog, and rain showers took a big chunk out of our snow pack in central and southern areas overnight. North of the metro it has remained much cooler in the 30s, and some spots there are still dealing with icy roads. The cooler air will spill south and in the metro we could drop into the 20s this morning, and then rebound around 30 by afternoon.
Here is the surface map from just after 3 a.m. Look how close we were to the cold air and a snowstorm!

If readings do drop into the 20s we will have to watch for some re-freezing of the water that is sitting on roadways in the city. Sidewalks and driveways could get really slick, so be aware of that this morning.
Finally, a few people mentioned they saw some weird frost yesterday. This was Hoar Frost. Hoar frost occurs when water vapor touches a very cold surface and freezes on it instantly. This can happen to leaves and branches of plants, and will cover them ice crystals that look like spikey fingers. This typically happens when the ground is much colder than the air. Jason Ochs of Ottawa, KS shared this picture with us. Pretty cool!

We will have an update on the weekend forecast and any possible snow chances in our next blog update this morning! Gary will update the blog with his thoughts around 8:30 AM.
