Winter Weather Advisory

Good late morning bloggers,

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY is in effect through 3 PM today!

Freezing rain & sleet are rapidly increasing and centered on Kansas City.  Temperatures will likely be around 30 to 32 degrees.  There have already been many reports of accidents and slick conditions.  If it sleets even for a few minutes the roads could completely become ice covered.  There is a good chance that temperatures will be warming above 32 degrees this evening briefly which will help a lot on area roads.  And, then the main storm approaches and the latest data confirms our forecast of 1 to 3 inches of snow possible on Christmas Eve morning.  We will talk a lot more about this during the 11 AM hour on NBC Action News, and then at 5, 6, and 10 PM.

Another storm is showing up for Saturday.  Please let us know what you are experiencing and be careful as you go out today.  It is windy, cold, with some sleet, freezing rain, and rain.

Look for an update around 1 PM.

Gary

It bears repeating y'all:
I know y'all get upset when we get upset about y'all doing the snow dance and so on, but those of us that are forced to travel and can't call in sick or stop what they have to do, ya know it doesn't make us feel too good when we see folks hoping for bad weather. Please just keep in mind that weather blog or not, some of us come to get updates so we can prepare for the have to travel blues. You can get all excited and dance all you want but have some respect for the ones of us that are worried about driving in this ice and heavy snow and risking our lives ok? Not all of us have situations where we can take a day off and set home in front of a fire.

Folks in general snow is more manageable and much easier to drive in than ice. There is no safe way to drive on ice - and I agree with the first blogger, there are people that must go out and it can be very stressful to know that ice might be on the reads.

White Christmas is great but safe and stress free Christmas is better.

Cheers!

Agreed - what difference does it make that some want snow/no snow? Why do we have to repeatedly discuss the merits of either? We get it: it's enjoyable for some; stressful for others and sometimes it changes depending on the situation. What if we just let it go and focused on what is happening or might happen meterologically?

Be safe and/or have fun - whichever you prefer.

I live in Gardner and conditions got pretty bad pretty quick.  I ran into a store to do some last minute shopping and was in there for about 10-15 minutes.  When I got back out, it was extremely slick in the parking lot.  There was a tractor trailer that slid off the exit ramp and another uhaul of sorts that made it off the ramp before sliding in the wrong direction.  There have been several sirens going off for the past hour.  Slow dow, be careful, and take your time!  Don't be the person riding so closely behind someone else that they feel pressured to go a little bit faster than they are comfortable with.  Be safe!

Since we're picking sides today, I'm with Andrew and the others who enjoy winter for the snow, sleet, graupel, and ice it brings.  I'm not really a fan of winter, but since it's here it might as well produce.  I also have to drive from near Liberty to downtown for work every day.  This morning it was a touch slick on side roads but was certainly passable for someone with common sense and a respect for, but not fear of the conditions.  The drive home may or may not be as easy, but I'm not going to sit here and worry about it all afternoon.

While I can respect the fact that other people worry constantly about driving on slick roads, it also gets old for people like Whirlygirl to come on here everytime the conditions turn from sunny to stormy and tell us what we can and can't express.  This IS a weather blog and you ARE going to see people talk about how much they like inclement weather.  If you don't want to see that and instead just want an update on the road conditions, there are websites and phone numbers you can visit that give you just facts, without the opinions.  I suggest you use them.

I have to vent for a second about the roads this winter. I normally have no problem with the road crews, but this season has been a total bust so far. The first snow "storm" 2 weeks ago today was a complete failure for pre-treating the roads. None of these storms have been surprises. Last weeks snow was treated pretty well, but this week is again a failure. I see rain on the radar at 7am this morning and I see that the temps are below freezing for many southern areas of KC as well as northern KC. Frigid road surface temps plus water=ice.

I have heard that some municipalities are trying to conserve salt this season. Is this the reason? I don't blame the guys out there in the trucks working all night long, I blame the leadership.

Flame away folks!

You are entitled to your opinion of wanting nice weather but to ask someone else to withhold their opinion of wanting snow just cause it might offend someone is not fair.  I don't mean any disrespect with this post either and I hope no one took it that way.   Drive safe out there.

WOW!!! I just ran our AWD Pacifica off the road at Hook and Pryor in Lee's Summit. I took my wifes car today to get the oil changed for our trip to St. Louis tomorrow morning. I took a left onto Hook and slid right off the road at 5mph. Thankfully, I slid off onto a flat area of mud and gravel and I got back onto the road. The back roads were completely ice covered, however, since I got home ( I was a mile a way ) it has started to rain/sleet and seems to have melted some of the ice on the roads.

Very Slick Peeps!

The bad side to this; is my wife took my Chrysler 300C (Got HEMI???) to work. Bad, bad move on my part. I am just hoping that rush hour for her will be ok.

With regards to Whirly Girl; I AGREE!!!! However, I would definately take snow over over ice right now. I have to pick up my daughter Grace from daycare. They have announced they are closing early today. So I have to go back out in this and given the choice; I would take the snow over ice.

I'm not down with people cheering for bad weather, but at this point I would rather have it snowing, than continue on with this rain/sleet/Ice.

The rooftops are iced over and the decks and trees are building with ice.

Be extremely careful folks. The safe in Have a Safe and Happy Holidays bodes well right now.

Merry Christmas!!!! May the Lord Bless each and everyone of you!

That being said, the first winter I was on the blog, it really bothered me hearing these people cheering for snow.  However, now I've found it's just easier to ignore their posts and move on for the more informative posts.  I for one am just hoping that everyone makes it to their destinations safely the next couple of days!!

Just checking in...again!!!!

Currently at 34 in SW Lawrence-we have had just a few passing bouts oif rain-nothing much at all here as the band has set up just to our south. Sorry to hear about all the problems in KC-Lawrence got lucky on this part as everything has melted that was iced up earlier.

Couple observations:

1. Looking at the 18Z surface charts you can see (I think??) the front about to pass through Concordia, Kansas-places behind the front have dropped back into the middle 20's. Will be interesting to follow this front as I am guessing it will have an affect on how the energy tracks later toinight.

2. I think on the water vapor imagery, one can see the energy getting its act somewhat together and it is beginning to round the base of the gerneral western trough and head out. Something to watch I think

3. Regarding Lawrence specifically: I wonder if today's radar trends are possible a precursor to how the bands set up tonight-that goes against the models etc. but it seems that in these types of situations where one has two bands of precip. that the first band can give a clue as to how the second one will line up. Interesting to watch radar trends tonight for sure!!

4. I posted in the previous blog: I think Saturday for sure has possibilities but man to look at it from run to run of the GFS will age you about 100 years-just look at the diffferences between the 0z and 12Z runs. I do personally feel that given history and this year's LRC (moe in ramblings in previous blog on this LOL) Saturday could definately produce something-will be interesting to see how it looks Thursday and Friday.

Stay safe everybody!! It is kind of neat to see-well at least I think I see this correctly-the players for tonight taking the field-will be fun to see how they all play tonight and tomorrow morning!!

Have a great afternoon

Bill in Lawrence

***************************

Bill,

Glad to hear all is quiet in your area.  I'm in Milwaukee where there is more snow on the ground than I've ever seen before.  This includes December of 2000 which produced 35" for the month!

So far today there has been 3" of snow, another 1" this afternoon.  Then on Wednesday another 3-5".  People are sick of the snow here, but since it snows almost everyday recently people don't even seem to notice anymore.  If anyone really wants to live in an area with snow you need to move north to either Wisconsin, MN, or the Dakotas.

I'll take some picture to share next week!

PilotS77 yes it is true that "This is a PUBLIC forum and you must behave in a certain way and respecting others is never a bad idea." But wishing for snow or even ice is not disrespectful or even insensitive.  But telling someone what they can and can not post, like their wish for snow or ice is.  They have every right to post their wish for snow just as much as others have a right to come here and wish for sunshine.

******************

OK...enough.  We can all share ideas but we don't need to go through the back and forth of what to say and not say.  We have another exciting weather day on our hands so lets enjoy it from a weather standpoint.  No one really wants people to get hurt or injured from any type of weather event whether it be heat, snow, ice, tornadoes, etc.  So lets just keep discussing the weather and focus less on monitoring others comments.  If someone is out of line we will address it.  We really don't want to turn the comments section of the blog off now or in the future.  This is meant for everyone...carry on.

People.... calm down please. Some of you don't like it when us snow lovers get all excited about snow. And we are sorry for that, at least I am....But come on now.. Our Supreme Leader GARY get's more excited than all of us combined.

Do you watch the news? He has a snow garments for crying out loud... a snow vest, a snow tie, I bet he even has snow underwear! I LOVE IT!

I love the snow and the more the merrier! As for getting around I drive a 4WD and like driving in the snow... ice no. I don't like ice storms, the last big one cost me $3,000 on tree damage alone, which insurance did not cover.

As for the blog just being for weather only I don't think that was Gary's intent either, should we learn and become more informed about the weather... yes... that is why we watch him, he does more than just tell us what the weather is like he helps us learn about the how and the why's of weather.

However from my viewpoint this blog is also for posting and delivering information, road conditions, snow totals, rain totals, etc....

I say as long as it is civil, not profane, and  weather related than go ahead and post.  My two cents.... for whatever it is worth.

Temps here at Red Bridge and Blue River Rd.  33.75 degrees, and raining... some spots are slick, just depends what the surface is....

I can hear the "rain" tink against the windows, so I don't think it is all rain. Lots of wind here in Lee's Summit, near Colbern and the 7.

And a tip for all of those of you who have had issues with their furnaces during the cold (I wish this was why mine keeps acting up), by husband's boss had his furnace go out yesterday in their house. The repair man came out and appearently with higher effecency furnaces moisture can freeze the air exhaust pipes closed. I guess they spit out moisture when they vent the exhaust and that moisture freezes when it hits the cold air. So if it is really cold outside and your furnace is not working at all, go outside and check the air intake and exhaust pipes or any pipes that are covered in ice. Make sure that they are not frozen over. If they are, knock off the ice and you should be good to go. You will get heat faster than waiting for an over worked furnace repair guy to come.

There are at least two other popular weather websites that have been giving statistics/probabilities/pro/con conditions etc. for a white christmas for almost every region of the CONUS for about a month now...so there is obviously a demand for such information for those who are hopeful/waxing nostalgia/or maybe just want a refresher on the last time they saw one(personally it is nostalgia/hopeful...for me there was nothing more beautiful and serene waking up to a blanket of snow on Christmas morning, bonus if it was still falling when it came time to head out to my Grandparents)  I am not trying to be contrary by sharing how I feel about snow...and I do not have the luxury of staying at home when it occurs either.  Just merging onto 69 hwy north off of 435 on bone dry pavement posed such a daily threat to my health and automobile that I ultimately ended up going another way home...And driving in the rain blinds me.  I could go on and on about what makes driving so dangerous weather related or not, not even factoring in individual liabilities.  I love this blog, it will be my third and a half winter having a blast tracking the storms, feeling the elation when they produced, the frustration when they didn't, and regardless of either...loving the entries first by Gary and Jamie, and then afterward when Jeremy got on board (not forgetting Brett and Jeff either) And above all the personal interaction from the weather team and the time they take to inform and educate... not just in the frequent blog entries, but also in the time they devote to giving personal responses...all together has made this such an extraordinary community that I feel fortunate to be a part of...I am sorry this is so long winded, but weather has been a lifelong passion of mine since childhood...severe weather in the spring, the smell, color and sunsets of autumn, and the cold and snowstorms of winter(summer is my down season), and this blog has been a haven of (mostly) like-minded people.  There have been a couple of exceptions, but for the most part everyone here is bound by a common thread-the love of weather in general (or a specific type), forecasting, and/or just watching and waiting for it to come in together...No one wants the danger or tragedy that can accompany any weather event.  Again I mean no disrespect, but if I can't express my excitement here that I might get to see snow falling in my backyard(hopefully with the good for "snowball and snowman"  type snow this time, or how I love the way the air smells when a thunderstorm is brewing because there is some danger involved, then I might as well go inside, lock the door and start worrying next about whether or not the chemicals in my carpet is really causing more pollution on the inside than out.  The (41 weather team) forecasts are usually dead-on..and I watch the newscasts to get them specifically.  I come here to read or talk about weather when there is an interesting/exciting event that is either imminent or on the horizon...and it is seriously a bummer when asked not to get excited about it because of it's associated hazards.  Just to clarify: I do not wish for ice storms, or to see tornadoes go through neighborhoods, or for anyone anywhere to get struck by lightning, lose everything in a flood, die of heatstroke, etc.  Love of weather does not equal love or desire for catastrophe on a large or small scale.  Again, sorry so long...this kind of touched a chord:)
