Afternoon update on snow potential

Winter Weather Advisory in effect into Wednesday morning for the viewing area!  Watch NBC Action News HD for the latest on forecast snow totals!

Good afternoon bloggers,

Let's keep things in perspective here.  We just had a small icing event over parts of the viewing area.  There were accidents and peoples lives were affected. One of the accidents had mulitple fatalities.  It was not a good day for many people.  So, please understand how the weather can impact peoples lives.  This icing event is now close to being over as temperatures are still rising.  Please be careful around your decks, driveways, parking lots, and untreated roads.  Conditions are improving for the next few hours, but then here comes the snow.

I know a lot of you are frustrated at seeing all of these big snowstorms around the nation and all we have had are small ones so far.  Well, this next one will be fast moving and likely will miss some of the viewing area.  But, we live in Kansas City, not Minneapolis, Madison, or Boston.  Most of our snowstorms end up in the 1 to 3 inch range.  So, again, keep this in mind as this storm approaches.

The latest data is coming out and for snow lovers I like what I see.  There could be a well organized wave that tracks perfectly for someone to get more than 3 inches of snow late tonight into Christmas Eve.  I am working on some special graphics so watch NBC Action News in HD at 5, 6, and 10 PM tonight.  I will be updating the blog this evening.

There is no chance of snow before midnight tonight, so get your shopping done and have a safe day!

Gary

That statement has been needed to be said for a long time now. I love big snows, but all of those models showing more than a foot at 120 hours, people NEED to understand that just doesnt happen around here.

Wait, it does happen, maybe once every 10 years?? Maybe???

What is funny about all those who are hoping for lots of snow. Our first snow fall here in Missouri was the "big one" in Dec. of 05. My husband was so excited (at least he was until I made him plow the long driveway. He has not plowed it since :-)  ) Now whenever it snows he hopes that it will be another big snow storm. He is just nuts about the snow. He still doesn't want to accept that the storm in 05 was unusual for us. :-)

Be very careful out there!!!    Just watched a older neighbor fall and break her pelvic bone.    She was in alot of pain but I told her to be glad it was not her hip as the EMS was working on her.    I had to be very careful myself not to fall.      The main roads seem fine with side streets slushy or some ice.   Any untreated surface is very icy and dangerous.    It is 33 here in OP and the ice seems to be slowly melting away.

Just noticed points to the west are under a WWA, should fill in around us soon.   I am glad a nice coat of snow will cover the ice if it does not melt.

Very agressive wording out of the EAX office this afternoon concerning the weekend potential.

IN ALL METEOROLOGICAL FIELDS...PREFERRED THE 00Z/12Z ECMWF FOR THE
END OF THE WEEK...REGARDING A SLOWER FRONTAL PROGRESSION THROUGH THE
AREA (FRIDAY NIGHT VS. LATE FRI AFTERNOON IN THE GFS)...AS WELL AS A
MORE DISTINCT SRN STREAM WAVE REMAINING MORE DISCONNECTED FROM A NRN
STREAM WAVE. GIVEN THIS SCENARIO...AM CONCERNED ABOUT SIGNIFICANT
SNOW EVENT FRIDAY NIGHT AND SATURDAY. AT LEAST TWO SIMILAR EVENTS
OCCURRED 2 WINTER SEASONS AGO...WHERE HEAVY SNOW FOCUSED ALONG THE
PATH OF THE SRN STREAM WAVE AND JUST NORTH OF THE ACTIVE BAROCLINIC
ZONE.

I was a little surprised at the agressive wording, being that this is Tuesday...

I hope they are right.  It is just too early to tell, and this season we haven't seen one close off south of Kansas City.....yet.

From what my neighbor (who is a native midwesterner) has told me, driving in the snow is a whole lot better than driving on the ice. He gave me the tip that if you are driving on icy roads and the shoulder is snowy, try to have at least a couple of your wheels on the snow. He said that there is a whole lot more traction in the snow than the ice.

I'm in a quandry, I REALLY want to get out of the house (I'm tired of waiting for repair people) and I need to go grocery shopping. But I can't leave, sigh. I guess my husband will have to do it on the way home, that worries me because he is not the best driver and everyone is saying that the roads are slippery. I guess I just have to trust a higher power to keep everyone safe.

I would never go on a week long chase, not just because of the cost, but because you may pick a bad week and see nothing, Sean has a knack for figuring out where the best cells are and being in the middle of them. The chasers on the blog also do not take riders from what I gather. So I guess I will just sit home and wither away come April. I'd cry over him moving if it wasn't for the fact the tears would freeze to my face. :)

snowclue looks like you may need some candles to heat those pipes if they are copper.

That really is an amazing satellite picture of the snow.  I have never seen anything like that before.

Really...REALLY hoping that the heavy snow pushes south into Johnson County tonight.  I am going to be up till at LEAST 3am so im going to be watching!  I will send a snowfall total from my location at 124th and State line on the snowfall should things get exciting around 4am.

Looks like there may be a dry slot already forming between the two bands of moisture.

Gery,

Please let the kids and parents in kansas city get the good news tonight at 10. I know that they want a white christmas and so do i. I sure hope that the snowfall sags south so we can get into the bullseye of the storm, that will hopefully keep the ground white till christmas and also if the tempuratures keep low all day tomorrow.

Brad,

The temperatures will be very low on Wednesday. The snow may be tougher to achieve.  I am still hopeful, but the amounts look less.

The temperature here in Stilwell has reached 37 degrees! It is almost nice outside - things are melting and slushy - tomorrow morning might be a different story but what is up with these warm evening temperatures? I have been here for 11 years and do not remember this happening before!

The NAM gives me 2.5" to 3" of snow, while the gfs gives me 3.5" to 4.5" of snow. Very misleading, but encouraging as each run pushes everything just slightly farther south. I wonder what the team's take on this is(hint, hint).
