A huge warm up...December 26, 2008

Good morning, IT'S FRIDAY!

We will talk about an absolutely amazing warm up, rain, snow, a strong cold front in today's Action Weather Blog!  Watch NBC Action News in HD as we track this developing storm!  Christmas pictures are below and I am taking the dogs for a jog right now to take advantage of the warm air!

63 is the record high today and it is already 63 downtown at 11 AM!

The temperatures warmed up all night and it has caused all of the surfaces to become saturated this morning.  A storm is approaching and the National Weather Service has already issued a Flash Flood Watch for areas just southeast of Kansas City.  This is a very complex storm system that could produce 1 to 3 inches of rain on frozen ground leading to the flash flooding potential.  Kansas City is right on the edge of this potential heavy rain event.

Look at the 7 AM surface map, below:

This is absolutely fascinating this morning as you can see the Arctic air retreating over the northern plains.  70 degree air at 7 AM is surging north from Oklahoma and our forecast high of 64 degrees has a great chance of verifying this afternoon or even tonight.

A strong storm system is approaching the plains. This storm is directly related to two storm systems that moved in from the western states in November.  One huge upper low formed around November 6th to our north and a second system came across positively tilted less than a week later on November 12th.  We are in around a 50 to 53 day cycle and the November 6th storm system happened 51 days ago.  Go to www.LRCWeather.com for more details on the LRC.  I will welcome all questions on this comparison and what is happening with this unique pattern.

So, what is this storm going to do?  An upper level trough is swinging across the western states this morning. This will move out into the plains as it tries to close off into an upper low.  The latest NAM model this morning shows an upper low trying to form over Kansas on Saturday:

As this storm approaches moisture is surging out of the Gulf of Mexico into the plains.  This is the fuel necessary for thunderstorms.  So, now we just need a trigger.  A cold front will move across the area tonight and Saturday focusing the heaviest rain in the warm air south and east of Kansas City.  Our viewing area, again, is right on the edge of this potentially flooding rain event.  Any farther to the southeast and we will end up with 1/4 inch of rain or less.  A bit farther northwest and we will have 1 to 2 inches of rain.  Look at the rainfall forecast from the NAM model below:

As the upper level low forms there may be a band of snow on the backside of this storm system.  The latest NAM is indicating the potential for some minor accumulation tomorrow evening.  I will talk more about this later on today.  In the mean time have a great Friday.   Try to watch NBC Action News today for Kansas City's most accurate forecast and best description on what this weather pattern is going to do.  We are very proud of today's forecast from earlier in the week when most forecasts had highs in the 30s for today we said it would be well into the 50s.  Even our forecast underestimated this amazing warm-up today.  If you haven't stepped outside yet you will be amazed at how warm it feels out there after 3 below zero earlier in the week.

How was your Christmas?  Here are some pictures from yesterdays Christmas with Breezy and Stormy, Slick and Stuey too.

The above picture shows Stormy getting into Breezy as they love to play.  And, the below picture is how they have settled down in front of the Christmas Tree:

And, this last picture is with Stormy, Breezy, Slick, and Stuey.  Have a great day!

Now this is the weather I like!  =)

I now feel important...I got one of those weather reporting station things and now I can tell everyone what the temp is at my house.  I think I may get an upgrade to it to at wind and the rain gauge for my b day in a couple of months.  I cant tell you what the temp is at my house right now though because, unfortunately, I am at work today.  But that is ok, my arm needed a break from the Wii!  lol

What is the possibility for severe weather such as high winds/hail around the La Cygne area?

Very low probability of severe weather as the front should get passed you early on Saturday!

Gary,

Thank you for the nice break from cold weather. I see this as primarily a rain event for us in the metro with some wet snow near the end of the event in the deformation zone. I see less than 1" of snow here in southern Johnson County before the system passes off to the east/northeast. Northwest Missouri will likely see more snow from this system than we do.

A belated happy holidays to everyone on the weather team...

Hey Gary....really, I'm sorry to bother you about this yet AGAIN, but I thought I'd check for your thoughts one more time before heading up to Lincoln for my family's Christmas later this morning.

From what you are seeing, what do you think this storm will do for areas between
KC and north to Nebraska/Iowa (or more specifically, from KC up I29 and to Lincoln, NE)?  If it does minor accumulation here, but looks to dump a bunch of snow up near the MO/Iowa border or points north/northwest, then my travel back from Lincoln on Sunday could still be a bit tricky.  Just wondering if the heaviest snow currently looks to be more south of the KC metro, or north?

And thanks again for all the hard work you and your team put into giving us not only the most accurate forecast, but constantly giving us the most updated information. Your passion and enthusiasm for the weather is really a huge benefit for us here in KC.  I know the people at work are tired of hearing me say, "Well Gary said...".

Happy New Year to you all!

---------------------

Leaving today and coming back Sunday will be no problem at all.  Sunday will be sunny.  And, the best chance of snow is where they keep getting it way up in northern Iowa northward.

Good day-after-Christmas to you GARY!

Wow ! What a ride we have been on !
60's today, 30's tomorrow. Crazy!

Here is some of what is going on in other parts of the country:

The mountains around Lake Tahoe received about 2 feet of snow, bringing totals at some resorts in the past two weeks to 10 feet.
"This is one of the snowiest Christmas holiday periods I can remember," said Kent Hoopingarner, general manager at Homewood Mountain Resort.

In New Mexico, San Juan County got up to 5 inches of snow for its first white Christmas in 11 years, the weather service said.

Snow and ice weren't the only problems. The weather service confirmed that it was two small tornadoes on Christmas Eve that caused scattered damage in Alabama.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Don't you wish you were at Tahoe right now?
(but we are glad you are here to keep bringing us the most accurate forecasts!)
Have a good weekend Gary !
Yes, I wish I was there!  I have been there for some huge snows.  I miss it.
GARY,
I forgot to ask. According to AccuWeather, if we warm up above 63 today, it would break the record for the date, set in 1954.
Is that right?
--------------
Yes, the record high for today is 63. I will add it to the top of the blog.  We should break it.
Very surprising that we are finally expecting to get hit with a big storm here in Kansas City, and the temperatures will prevent it from being snow at one of the coldest times of the year.  This never seems to happen.  Things always fall in place for us to get hit with big snowstorms, but I guess this is the one exception to the rule.  For once, it's just not coming together for us.  This is really shocking.  Oh well, I'm sure the next one will hit us head on, and we may even get up to 1" of snow out of that one.  Then things will really get exciting...  (A bit frustrated at this point...)
Guess we knew it wasn't good when Gary never added to his early morning blog from yesterday.  I'm pretty sure he's just as frustrated as the rest of us snow lovers though....Oh well....
Have a good one.
Matt
-----------
Matt,
Yes it is frustrating.  I am with you on that. But, there is nothing we can do. It certainly has been exciting. And, things change fast so let's keep tracking this storm closely.  Also, the potential continues for the next few weeks to have many more chances.  We aren't in the right spot in this years LRC, but it doesn't mean it won't all come together at least once.
Gary,
On a more serious note, I do have a question for you.  If the storm coming through in the next 36 hours were to come through with temperatures between 25-30 degrees, how much snow would you expect us to receive?  Let's assume we receive 1.5" of rain out of the storm from 10:00 this evening to 3:00 tomorrow afternoon.  How much snow would that translate to?  I'm not talking about ratio's here or anything, that I get.  What I'm trying to figure out is whether we would still be likely to squeeze out the same 1.5" of moisture in the time period, if it all fell as snow.  I understand that the warmer it is, the more moisture the atmosphere can hold, but is that the only factor?  I guess the simplest way to ask my long drawn out question is, assuming we receive 1.5" of moisture out of this storm, how much moisture would you expect it to deliver if temps were in the upper 20's, with all other variables in this storm remaining constant with current projections?  Sorry if I rambled..
Thanks,
Matt
Thanks for sharing the pictures of Stormy, Breezy and their friends!  They're all so cute =).  The little dogs (Hoss and Popeye) are loving this weather, first time they've been outside for any length of time, I think they're hoping for an early Spring ;).  Cloudy, breezy and warm here, 62 degrees and very humid, the air is thick with moisture, I'm sure glad it's not below freezing with these winds and the rain that is coming.  I have one more week of vacation time before going back to school, sure would like some sunshine to go with these warmer temperatures, maybe a little "beach-like" weather????  A girl can dream can't she?  Have a great day everyone.
So I have a question.  I got a Weather Channel Weather Station for Christmas.  It has the Windvane, the hygrometer and rain gauge on it.  Its wireless so I cant go too far from the house...but what is the best way to put one of these items up at your house.  I would like the readings to be somewhat accurate, meaning I dont want shade to interfere with the temperature, wind speed at a somewhat unobstructed level.  Is there a website out there anywhere with tips on what to do to make this a good get for christmas?  Would love to try to chart things with this.
KCGladstone....The best way is to put the aneometer at least 5' above the roof line. The temp if not shielded, should always be in the shade.  You check out my tips for weather station installations here: http://kclongrangeweather.com/7.html
