Kansas City Shatters Record High

Good evening bloggers,

Kansas City set the record high for today's date that was 63 degrees back in 1954.  Today, it got up to at least 66 at KCI and 68 downtown.  Will this warmer moist air lead to thunderstorms?  Dave, at a radio station in Trenton, said they had 30 foot visibilities this morning as the warm air surged in and melted all of the snow north of Kansas City.

The cold front is still way out over northwestern Kansas.  This means that it will be a muggy December evening and still near 65 degrees at midnight.  WOW!  Thunderstorms are possible overnight but nothing is developing yet.  Cold air will rush into the region early on Saturday with a chance of some snowflakes Saturday evening.

This is likely the finale of round 1 of the recent crazy weather of ups and downs.  Round 2 is due in soon, but I will enjoy the break early next week.

I will try to update the blog this evening if we see any thunderstorms developing.

WOW! indeed.  I've had all of my apartment windows open, have been doing my chores in a short-sleeve shirt, and I've still got a fan on for moving a breeze around the place.  Today has been a day for getting a lot of the trash and recyclables out of the apartment.  Such a pleasant drive to the recycling center when you're not weighed down by a winter coat.  The snowheads on this blog will have their chances again, and soon enough.  But I'm glad to have this day!

Gary,
What do you think about the potential for severe weather? Will we have to wait and see where/if  thunderstorms form?
___
Looks like that latest GFS gives us quite a bit of rain! Approaching 1.5" for the east side of the metro.
Up to an inch on the west side. Not sure about severe weather, but the SPC does have a portion of the metro, mainly south of a Topeka to KCI line in the slight risk area.

David,

I think the chance is very slim for our local area.  Let's see what happens with any development this evening.

Hey everybody --- please slow down out there.  The roads are still slick because they are now wet..   A couple of hours ago on Southbound 71 Highway near Blue Ridge, cars stopped in the far right lane, cars were changing lanes abrutly to avoid hitting them.  As I was getting around them, traffic just stopped in the 2nd and 3rd lanes.  Although I had a safe distance between me and the car in front, when your driving 55 and they are not moving....  well you guessed it.   Luckly everyone is ok, no air bags deployed.  The front of my Ranger was a little damage, but the back in the the Honda Accord is smashed..    So, please slow down and pay attention out there.

Gary, do you have an idea of rain fall amounts?

I have a Christmas party to attend tonight and I am thinking about not going if we are going to have torrential rains.

NWS has me in a 1-3 inch band (North of La Cygne). That is a huge spread when talking about frozen ground.

All charts aside, one point of observation is that we seldom have a day of this magnitude at this time of year without some serious payback to come, usually shortly after. Warm air is much easier to run off than heavy cold air. Warm air also holds water much better than cold. With this amount of moisture in the air the coming cold should squeeze out some nice cleaning street rain.  I just hope it doesn't get too intense.

The warmth couldn't have come at a better time; I've been sick, but today, I felt well enough to go outside, and just run around, and let the wind go through my hair.  Too bad it has to end so soon...

Warmth, I think we'll get rain and thunderstorms but not like what the EAX office is predicting:

http://www.crh.noaa.gov/wxstory.php?site=eax

Another cold front is expected to sweep through the area Friday night and Saturday morning. Much warmer temperatures will prevail ahead of the front with abundant low level moisture increasing across the lower Missouri river valley. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop along and ahead of the front tonight and into Saturday morning. Strong to severe storms can be expected across portions of southeast Kansas into central Missouri where the best combination of shear and instability will exist. Also the rain may lead to flooding on area rivers on Saturday, with the most likely region to see flooding problems extending from south of Kansas city, into central and northeast Missouri. The rain should gradually mix with sleet then snow behind the front on Saturday as temperatures tumble into the 30s during the day. Only light sleet or snow accumulations are expected.

It was great!  Took down the Christmas decorations without a coat or gloves on for a change!  However, our garage floor has so much condensation, we are afraid it will freeze when the cold front comes through.  Is anyone else having this problem?

Gary, and Team,

Perhaps a stupid question, but regarding the LRC, if I am traveling somewhere and look back 45-50 days, shouldn't I be able to determine the approximate weather for the period I will be in that region? That only makes sense to me.

Thanks for all the great work you do.

Yes, there is a way to do this, but we are still figuring it out ourselves. January through May are the best months to make these predictions as we showed very well last year.  It is still difficult to do.

We watched the outside temp on the thermometer in the car go up as we drove into K.C. today. It was great, I hung out in K.C. today with my girls, waiting to drive the husband home from work (so he did not have to take the bus). It was wonderful to just be in a short sleeved tee shirt!! Plus I got that added bonus of spending the day with my daughters. A wonderful extra Christmas gift. I loved the warm weather!!

Hey Gary,

I dont know what you have in store for the new weather channel once it starts on the 1st, but I wish you would have a daily LRC segment, showing what you are looking at and then what we can expect based on the cycle.  That would be pretty cool!  I wish also that you could have a long range spotlight...which shows a several week forecast...just as a guide based on the LRC and what you think might happen.  That would be something totally different than what the "other" and your former channel did.  I would love to see more educational stuff along with the forecast.  Also I wish you could be more in depth with the short term forecast as well!
