Freezing Rain, Snow, Tornado Watch...December 27, 2008

Good morning bloggers,

This is absolutely the strangest morning of weather I have experienced in years as winter clashed with a taste of spring. A strong upper level storm is approaching.  Here are all of the things that happened in about a 4 hour stretch from 2 AM to 6 AM:

  • A bow echo moved through with 70 mph winds between 4:30 and 5:30 AM
  • A very strong cold front blasted in dropping temperatures to below freezing
  • A Tornado Watch was in effect with frequent lightning in many locations
  • A Freezing Rain Advisory has been issued and freezing rain is occuring
  • Snow is possible this afternoon
  • It was 65 degrees at 2:52 AM and 32 degrees by 5:15 AM a 33 degree drop

Here is ESP radar at 7 AM showing the large area of rain and thunderstorms.  Remember it is now 32 degrees or lower in many locations as this rain is falling.  Bridges, overpasses, decks, driveways, parking lots and other untreated surfaces will likely ice up in the next two hours.  The rain will end from west to east and be out of here by later this morning preventing any major icing.  Then, we will begin looking for an area of snow which may develop this afternoon.

An area of snow has already developed across western Kansas as this vigorous upper level storm heads our way.  Along and north of the upper level storms path will likely see accumulation of snow later today.

Watch NBC Action News at 8 AM as we track all of these developments.  I will update the blog right here around 9 AM....

Gary

Grapeman I am near you, 94th & Wellman, we have a very thin, almost none, of ice here.

We lost power here at 4:14AM, that was the last reading I got from my weather station to be sent to the pc.  I think my transmitter is out.  Backup rain gauge had .87" at 7AM.  Its 33 here and a little rain.  Had quite a bit of hail around 2:30.

Reading all these reports and seeing the radar makes me a little nervous to drive back to KC from Cincinnati right now with the wife and kids!  Debating what to do.

Sure hope everyone is OK and the freezing rain moves out for all your sakes.  Sounds really bad in Leavenworth County from the blog notes coming in.

Take care all!!!!!!!!!

We just broke out of the falling precip here in McLouth.  Now all we have is falling temps and growing icicles.  Its 31.6 here.  Just lovely, it was 63 yesterday and I  thought I found winter weather to my liking.  Then a tornado watch was posted and I was excited, that is more my style.  Then I get up and see blinking lights because the power went off and now ice everywhere?  Where is the justice in that.  Bring back the warmth and severe sring/summer weather.  I don't like ice and snow or any temp below 60.  I need to move to Florida.  So is this threat of snow going to amount to anything?  Looks like the band in central Kansas is growing and moving again.

Wow!   Talk about waking up to a surprise.  When I went to bed last night, the blog talked mostly about thunderstorms and heavy rain.  It did do that, I woke up a few times to thunder and heavy rain.  What I didn't expect was to wake up to everything covered in ice. Thankfully the sidewalk and drive are not icy, but it is currently sleeting so who knows if that will last.  I also wasn't expecting a winter storm warning. It is down to 28.9  What is going on with this crazy weather? Are we expected to get snow up here in northwest missouri?

We live at 159th/Nall ...approx. 4:40 p.m. (after the weather radio went off), I began to hear the oddest noise that grew louder and louder.  Within seconds, it sounded like a roar or a train.   Raced like crazy with our two children to the basement.  It shook the entire house, but was over within 5 mins.  Completely blew everything on our deck across or off it.  Haven't cked the roof or windows yet, but won't be surprised to be missing several shingles.  Gary, can straight line winds create noise like this as quickly as it did---it sounded like what they say a tornado does.

We are at 158th and Lamar. I woke with the dogs at 4:15 this morning and it was 62 degrees and very still. At 4:35 I heard the severe thunderstorm warning on the TV and the power started to flicker and then I heard what sounded like a train in the backyard. The winds hit the side of the house and we went to basement with the dogs. After the winds died down, we looked with flashlights and found that we lost a beautiful 25 foot Colorado blue spruce in the yard and our container with all of our lawn equipment was taken off the patio and thrown all over the yard along with our fire pit. Our weather station clocked the gusts at 4:41AM at 77.4 miles per hour - hurricane strength. I'm very glad we only lost the tree and the power for a few hours and we are all okay.

Kelly... To answer your question in the last blog, weather in Pittsburg (KS I'm guessing you were asking!) is just rainy right now. The leading edge passed through here without much notice. Just some lightning, thunder and tons of rain. We're headed back up 69 highway later today to KC, so maybe we can "slap hands" as we pass!  :)

We experienced extremely strong winds in Gardner as well.  I woke up around 4:30am to the sound of LOUD wind that sounded like a train.  I turned on the TV and saw the bow echo.   I can honestly say I don't know if I have ever experienced wind like that before and I've lived in the midwest for all 29 years of my life!  I could feel the house shaking and I thought the windows were about to blow.  I was convinced it was a tornado....our trash is up and down the street, Christmas lights were blown down and lawn furniture moved.  My husband is checking to see if there is any damage to the house...strange weather for December.  Makes me wonder what spring will have in store for us.

TwinkieKid, it's probably too late, now, but I would recommend that your dad head south first (Joplin, Tulsa, Muskogee) on his way to Texas. Looks like temps will remain warm for the drive... a safer bet since it's already below freezing with snow forecasted for Wichita. Either way, though, I bet he'll be fine!

What an amazing event. Gary and crew needs a break. Have a good day.

Would everyone have been up all night worrying if this had been spring? Some of the posts were downright panicky. Gary was on several times in the evening saying the threat was 99.9% no one was getting any tornadoes. The thunderstorms were fun to have this time of year and the warm weather was really awesome but I didn't think it was that worrisome. JMHO.

Decent sized fire in the street at 4:45 last night when a tree fell on the power line at 91st and Farley. I called the fire department. It didn't amount to anything, but the fire trucks did block off the road. Still no power as of 9:15 a.m. although I'm hopeful it will be back on soon.

Whirlygirl, maybe you didn't hear the roaring train around your house....otherwise, you might have been making a panicky post as well.   I think everyone is just trying to post what they experienced last night/this morning....panicky or not.  Better safe than sorry!!!!!   If you watched the news this morning, there are numerous reports of damage in JoCoKS.

Whirlygirl I have never experienced wind like that.   80+ MPH wind can do some damage.  While I was outside picking up what was left of my trash I heard in the distance a roar that turned out to be probably a 60mph wind gust.   I have to admit I had no idea what was going on being half asleep and all.

I am very sorry about any damage, Yes I heard the roar of the wind and it was loud. I don't like anyone to have damage and I didn't mean to say everyone was being panicky. Just in reading over some of the posts there were a couple that seemed to almost encourage panick instead of just reporting what was happening. Whenever there's some concern over the weather sometimes I see where someone will almost egg it on. When you aren't sure what's happening that is the last thing ya need to read.  On my street in western Dotte I don't see anything dmaged so we were lucky.

We still have a steady rain falling in Louisburg, but 34 degrees. The weather radio went off here three times over night. Around 5:15 we had an absolute deluge that was followed by about ten minutes of pea-sized hail and strong winds.

We have a small creek that runs behind our house that is currently full and flowing, but was way out of its banks earlier.

This is one of those weather situations you expect in March not December.

How's it looking for ice/snow up towards the Plaza this afternoon and evening?

Thanks l-jeff for letting me know about new blog.
Well......... I found out where that thunder and lighting was to my west.
Gravel Roads , little ice, big trees, major ice.  I drove about 5-18 miles west and it is SOOOOO much worse, trees are litterly bending to the ground.
The precip has stopped.  Completely here.  This was on the verge of being a major, major problem.  We have a quarter to half in of ice on everything and just to my west atleast one half inch.   The roads are suprisingly very nice.  EXCEPT where the heavy hail fell durning this torrential thunderstorm that moved through.
Severe to say the least.  The hail was pea to marbel size and the wind was in excess of 60 miles an hour, as soon as the hell stopped , the trees started crackling, thats when I knew and icestorm was developing.  It ended much soon then I thought though.   I need to check out that snow developing to the west.  The station calling for a dusting to inch I hear.  Any chance of that developing a little more?  Just curious.. lol     I didnt actually wake up until the wind hit and hail, then I thought, go back to bed, then.......I noticed it started freezing.  SOOO being the big winter weather fan I am, stayed up to keep the blog going .

To update my previous post, that bow echo did cause damage here Gary.  My Norway Maple in the back is gone. :(  It was a 40 foot tree and had wonderful shade in the summer.  Also have a little structural damage to the front of the house when a 5" limb broke off the Elm tree and hit the gutter, crushing it and barely missed the living room picture window.  Not sure if the roof has damage or not yet but hope it's ok.

164th and Nall and around 4:30 power went off, house started popping, loudest train sound I have ever heard. Does a bow echo make a train sound? I have never been so scared in my life. If this was not or a weak tornado I can not imagine a real one. I am still scared. Several windows blown out in neighborhood, gas leak, roofs torn back, shingle damage, trampoline metal bars in knots several houses from where orginated, wooden swingsets knocked over, debris everywhere. I have lived in Kansas almost 38 years and have never experienced anything like that. I have been through strong wind, but this was a roar of a train. You can see a path through my neighborhood.

Weather Team, does a gust front or bow echo sound like a train? I have been through these before and never heard a destinctive train sound. I have pictures I will try to send later.

Wow... what a wake up call... the bow echo hit at my house at 92nd Terrace and Holmes at 4:50am and everything said above is right on. The dogs were barking and going crazy and the house was shaking it was wild. I was actually a little scared and sever weather usually does not frighten me. We did not lose any trees but I watched our trampoline rise up off the ground about 20-30' in the air then do a flip and fly across the yard. The poles and springs were flying everywhere! It was CRAZY!

What a night... oh well I hope everyone is OK and didn't experiance too much property damage. As they say..."if you don't like the weather in Missouri just wait five minutes and it will change.... and boy did it ever!"

Keep up the good work Gary ....

I was really dissapointed at 5am when the winds were 70mph and no one from KSHB was on the TV telling us what was going on.  There wasn't even a scroll along the bottom. We are at 101st and Nall, and the winds were so scary, that my husband and I got the kids up and went to the basement.  None of the channels were really saying what was going on. KMBC was off air (must have had a technical problem), Fox had a scroll and a map, but that is all. Finally KCTV had a weather person on, and we got the information we needed. That our area was done with the high winds.  Would have been nice if you all had some kind of information.  I never watch anyone but KSHB, but this morning, I had no choice.
