NBC Action Weather Blog

Snow is next on the weather agenda!

Good late morning bloggers,

In the last blog entry I talked about this crazy day.  In this entry we will show you the upper level storm, and if it holds together at all we will see the ground turn white later this afternoon.  But, this storm will be going through a transition later today, so the race is on.  You can actually see the comma head on the 9:30 AM satellite picture below:

An area of snow has developed around this upper level storm.  If it holds together then we will see around an inch of snow later this afternoon or evening capping off an unbelievable day of weather.

Watch NBC Action News today at 5 PM as we track these developments and we look ahead to the first storm of 2009.  Meteorologist Jeff Penner is working today.

Have a fantastic day!  And let us know if you have any thoughts or questions.

Gary

I woke up this morning to slushy hail on my car and against my house.  I missed the whole show(I can sleep through anything).  There was some minor icing on trees but nothing on the roads out here in Lawrence.

I'm driving to Lenexa at 12 so I'm glad things didn't get worse!  Have a great weekend!

The rain is frozen in the screens and on the windows, so it is going to look like it's still raining for a while.  We managed to stay in tact, just a freaked out husband (and a scaredy dog) who thought the house was blowing away.  I wasn't expecting the weather to be so bad.

The trampoline we have had for 2 years and has gone through spring and summer storms and never once moved slammed into our fence and is bent up like a pretzel! The neighbors beside us have a tree limb sticking straight out of the ground! and now the trees are coated with a thin layer of ice! What crazy December weather! It just amazes me what can happen in Kansas city.

Freezing rain just stopped here in Shoal Creek/Liberty area.  There is minor icing on trees, but no ice on my driveway or the street in front of my house.  Temperature is steady at 30.5 degrees.  I was up when the storm blew through around 5:00 AM (thanks to my weather radio.)  The winds were nowhere near the warned 70 mph, but they were strong.

Yeah, this is twilight zone weather for sure.
Rain's over now here by the stadiums & not much freezing so far.  Raingauge is in mothballs, but guessing from the water standing in the bucket outside, had at inch to 1.25 inches of water.  MAN, I'm glad that wasn't all ice!

near 169 & Englewood I had 1.17 inches of precip over the past 24 hours.  .98 of that fell from 4:53AM to 5:30AM when that wicked little bow echo moved through southern Clay county.  This was one night I was glad the weather radio woke me up so I could see this whole event take place.

I guess I lucked out though.  My table and grill are blown around on the back deck, and my chairs are now down at the edge of the woods (100 feet away from house), but otherwise I don't find anything damaged luckily.

Anyone offhand know how to get the peak wind gusts this morning from either New Century Airport in Gardner or Johnson County Industrial at 151st and Pflumm?

I tried searching a little but didn't get far before thinking I would have faster luck posing that question here.  I had 5 700lb calves run through a heavy gauge field fence last night.  The wind sounded like a slowly approaching freight train with a stuck throttle for about 5 minutes (a few times!).  I believe here at Hillsdale lake we got on part of the curve of the bow echo from looking at radar.  Gets your heart a thumping when you are half asleep...that is for sure!

1912: Residents of Kansas City, Mo., began to dig out from a storm that produced 25 inches of snow in 24 hours. The snowfall total was nearly twice that of any other storm of modern record in Kansas City before or since that time. A record 40 inches of snow fell during the month of March that year, and the total for the winter season of 67 inches was also a record. By late February of that year Kansas City had received just six inches of snow. Olathe, Kan., received 37 inches of snow in the snowstorm, establishing a single storm record for the state of Kansas. (23rd-24th.

February 15-16, 1993: Central and southern Missouri was covered with up to 21 inches of snow. The airport at Cape Girardeau received 6 inches of snow in 1 hour and 20 minutes.

January 14-20, 1994: Northeast, central, and east-central Missouri experienced overnight low temperatures from below zero to –20 °F. Hundreds of homes and businesses had frozen and busted water pipes. Wind chills, which ranged from -30 to -50 °F, kept schools closed and accounted for 15 people being admitted to local hospitals for hypothermia and frostbite.

January 16-17, 1994: A layer of ice up to 2 inches thick formed over sections of southeast Missouri, followed by 6 to 10 inches of snow. Some areas were without power for more than 24 hours. Roofs collapsed due to the heavy weight of snow and ice.

January 12, 2007: While January wound up near average for temperatures across the region, the daily swings in temperatures were anything but normal. The first 12 days of the month can be categorized as above normal to much above normal with several days from 10 to 17 degrees above normal. The warm weather led up to one of the worst ice storms in history across the region. Damage estimates so far as of this report were over $40 million dollars for Greene county alone. From the 13th through the 22nd, temperatures were below normal with much below normal temperatures on the 16th and 17th. Near normal or slightly above normal temperatures occurred from the 23rd through the 27th, with much below normal temperatures for the remainder of the month. A second snow and ice storm occurred on the 20th which mainly affected southeast Kansas into west central and central Missouri. January 2007 ended with a quick moving light to moderate snowfall on the afternoon and evening of the 31st. General 1 to 3 inch snow amounts occurred throughout the region, with isolated 4 inch amounts.

Just some interesting weather events in our area, that I thought I might share

Your welcome, and the winter forecast has been amazingly accurate so far.  We forecast our area to be above average on precipitation, rain and snow, and below average temperatures. Even with the last two days December is well below average so far, and wet.

Ark, how can it even be remotely close to a 50 something day pattern?  I'm not saying the LRC is wrong--just the timing and here's why.\
Between 49 and 55 days ago was the first week of November where it was unusually warm and mostly dry.
49 days ago it was 39-32 and partly cloudy.
50 days ago 47-35 and partly cloudy
51 days ago 55-28 with about 1/4" rain
52 days ago 71-53 and scattered showers.
53 days ago 73-56 and sunny
54 days ago 74-57 and sunny
55 days ago 76-59 and partly cloudh
There was no trough, no thunderstorms, no cold front and I just don't see how one could use anything anywhere from a 49-55 day cycle----can you>?

-----------------

Gary B,

Here's how!  Just go look at the storm on November 6th and compare it to this one.  We are on around a 50 day cycle.  In May it won't be cold either. It isn't what happens specifically on the ground that counts.  What is going on today is what we expected to happen with this year's LRC.  Maybe not the extreme from spring to winter in two hours like this morning, but this storm is directly related to the one exactly 52 days ago!

Boy have I story to tell no that my power is back on near the JoCo Airport.

Last night the storms didn't come in until around 5. At first is was just a few rumbles of thunder then SMACK. The house is hit by wind, hail and small debrie. A few seconds later the lights everywhere flash on then off with a loud boom. Power outage.
I took pictures and as I look at them I think there are MANY LITTLE FUNNLES/TORNADOS juping around. There is lots of damge, houses stripped of shingles, tree lot of massive branches, cut in half and uprooted, all massive trees. Now we have ice, lots of ice. Some of my family got rain inside there house. Big storm, scary storm, the history on my wind meter showed a peek windgust of 102 MPH in my back yard. Although the average was 80-90 MPH. So I've experienced my first bow echo. :)

I was really dissapointed at 5am when the winds were 70mph and no one from KSHB was on the TV telling us what was going on.  There wasn't even a scroll along the bottom. We are at 101st and Nall, and the winds were so scary, that my husband and I got the kids up and went to the basement.  None of the channels were really saying what was going on. KMBC was off air (must have had a technical problem), Fox had a scroll and a map, but that is all. Finally KCTV had a weather person on, and we got the information we needed. That our area was done with the high winds.  Would have been nice if you all had some kind of information.  I never watch anyone but KSHB, but this morning, I had no choice.
