Snow Still Headed In

Good evening everyone,

We are currently monitoring 2 bands of snow between Topeka and Salina.  Looking at the latest radar (see below) and computer data it appears everything is on target for a 1" or less snow this evening. Roads will likely become slick. This will round out a crazy three days of weather which I will be talking about tonight on NBC Action News.

I will be on at 5 PM on NBC Action News HD tracking the snow.  It should be arriving in the city at that time.

Have a good evening.  Let me know what you are experiencing and I can include it in the weathercast tonight.  Our first snowflakes of the day could be just minutes away.

Jeff

pvt,

Everytime the snow looks like it is headed East, it evaporates.

I don't see anything more than flurries here in Blue Springs.  I have seen storms do this many times before.

Alright, so after this disturbance comes through then we look to be having a really mild break.  Is this the time between cycles officially? If so then we would be entering the second cycle for the winter right? Are we going to be seeing that split flow pattern a lot or different types?

-------------

Let's just enjoy the snow for now.  What an amazing day!  The weather pattern will continue to cycle, and this active three week stretch will return later in January into February. There are other chances in between so it won't completely calm down.

i still think that you will get around .5"(blue springs) heavysnow.  this snow is very efficient.  now that the low is in our area, the snow is moving more easterly than northerly.  you should see some stuff very soon.

Hey, I am on my new instinct and thought I would try typing on the blog...I am at my grandma's house here in Holt, MO  and there is some moderate snow pellets falling.

I was in Atchison earlier, and this morning there was just over a quarter inch on the trees, cars, and pretty much everthing else.

Good Evening Bloggers.  This is the first chance I've had to write in this afternoon.  The last band that moved through awhile ago dropped a quick 1 1/2 inches up here in St. Joseph.  It was a heavy snow but at times was mixed with some grapple. I believe because of the mix it is the reason the roads are slick.  Any place a car has traveled, the tracks turned into ice. Its very slick. I usually don't have alot of trouble in my jeep, but I hit a slick spot and down the hill I went.  Depending if the next snow band is as heavy as the first, I could see us with maybe a total of 3 inches.  With the ice this morning, and now the snow its turned out to be an eventful and interesting day.

About .25 inch of snow down here in Ottawa, the light fluffy kind that looks so pretty. I was going to say that we have had no snow since around sunset, but I just looked out the window (a good thing to do, right Gary?), and it's coming down again. This snowfall is not really hard and fast, but steady enough to maybe add up if it keeps up. Happy two days after, everyone!

pvt_murphy said:

graupel is when a supercooled water droplet comes into contact with a snowflake.  no melting occurs, its a freezing process in which the supercooled droplet incapsulates the snowflake for the lack of a better word...and then commenses freezing.

snow is done here.  1.4" on the deck...will check the protected side of the house later.

maybe an 3/4 of inch in my part of Liberty.  Trees are iced lightly.  Sure enjoyed hearing the thunder this morning.  I don't think we got anything that people got on the south side.  Talked to some relatives in Olathe/Mission area & the lightening & thunder was incredible they said.  They had light damage.  But today is one day closer to spring!  Less than 3 months now & this will be a memory.

The storms last night knocked my mom's shed over in North Kansas City, and that thing has seen some pretty nasty storms!

I'm up on 169 and Barry Rd. The trees are beautiful when the light hits them, and we got around .25-.50 of snow, maybe less. I haven't measured.

The roads are extremely crummy up here.  I just went to Taco Bell, and it took me about 5 minutes to back out of my parking spot.  It was uphill.  Cars are having a really difficult time getting up hills.  Most are having to back down them slowly and try to find another way.

Be careful out there!  :)  Hopefully we get some big snows soon!

Just looking at the GFS, it is just simply amazing.  Zonal to NW flow.  As expected.

Light dusting in LS.  No biggie...  What an insane last two/three weeks of weather.  I can hardly wait for this to come back again....and closer to my heart...what does this all look like in Spring with 2500K CAPE values, 60kt mid layer sheer, and a surface low passing just to the NW?  Can you imagine yesterday's WAA in Spring?

Me thinks I will be chasing more this year, and hopefully a bit closer to home [not TOO close]

Okay I was disappointed with that last band that came through tonight. It was really fine small flakes falling. It wasn't anything compared to the band that moved through earlier. Still have just a little over 1 1/2 inches.  It will be gone tomorrow I am sure if it warms up to 40.  It was nice while it lasted.  Roads are still slick though.

Wow the snow is like a very slick coating of powdered sugar (even seems slippery walking on it) on a glass plated world with the ice accumulation on everything, I will admit the ice storm is pretty when it doesn't knock out the power and cripple the city. It is a very unique looking world out there right now. It will be a shame to see it all melt, but this is Missouri!!  Interesting thing to note how the storm the week before Christmas got people worried about "an ice storm" and this thing practically came in from the back with hardly ANY talk of "ice storm" or worries there of and we came close to having a major ice storm then again this storm was one in a billion...?

Oh yes.. the Weather.
Here at the lake, it was about 5:30 AM when the front went through. I had a few windows open (since I use wood heat) and awoke to the sight of the curtains standing out vertically as the wnd gusts came in.  I heard a 'crack' and one of our 25' trees had fallen, nearly taking out one of the vehicles. After closing the windows and seeing there was no real damage, I went back to bed.  Life in the midwest.
