Finally....a break! December 28, 2008

Good Sunday Morning Bloggers,

We have been on an exciting weather ride the past few weeks.  It will settle down this week and I welcome the break.  But, it may not last too long.  In today's  and Monday's blog I am going to look back at the past few weeks, and look ahead into what we expect based on the LRC.

Here is something to think about as I am still writing and finishing this blog entry.  The below map is valid on Tuesday morning.  A large Arctic air mass is forecast to build this week over most of Canada.  I will add more thoughts soon, in the mean time go to www.LRCWeather.com and click on the blog there to check out Scott's thoughts on this cycling pattern....

This Arctic air across Canada will come down either in pieces or in another huge Arctic blast, but it just has to come down.  We will be showing how this fits into the LRC later today or on Monday.

Have a fantastic Sunday.  Jeff Penner is doing the 5 PM weather, and I am on after the Broncos/Chargers "playoff" game tonight.  I will be asking a question during the weathercast to get you all involved tonight.  What should I ask?

Good Winter's morning to you sir!! Currently sitting at 16 with about a 1/2 inch of snow on the ground-it was glorious outside this morning!!!

What an incredible weather day yesterday was-really not much more one can say but one just has to look in awe on how Mother Nature can work here-it can be so calm and benin at times but man it can be just amazing!! I hope everyone is doing ok and my thoughts are with all of those who had damage yesterday.

Well, the igloo actually made it through Friday in two ways: one: a little piece of ice was left yesterday morning and secondly my oldest son bagged up some of the snow and it is now sitting in my freezer!! Yes-my boys and I have some serious snow issues LOL!!!

I didn't have a chance to look at any thing weather related yesterday but thought all day long to myself that by the end of this week we should have some sort of storm come through that would be related to around November 13th and that this storm like the one in November would be the signal/set up our NW flow part of the pattern. I get on this morning and look at the 0z Euro and read Scott's Blog on LRC and bam there it is. How this storm acts next week remains to be seen as far as our sensible weather (although I do think one can get a sense from looking back) but the important thing to me is that this storm is showing up and the resultant NW flow after it passes is showing up. I am going out on a limb here since I have little meterological/science background but in my very humble/non weather educated opinion the LRC has nailed this pattern!! You can't make this stuff up!!

Will be interesting to see how it all plays out in the NW part this time through-November was not without excitement so maybe this time we can hit a few of these impluses heading down in the NW flow-then in about a week to 10 days one should begin to see the active cycle begin to show up on the models-one should begin to see that ridge again building up into the Gulf of Alaska and by say January 25th, we should be getting ready to head into the active pattern.

Just some thoughts this morning-I swear I am not just copying Scott's Blog though it seems that way-I really have been thinking this on my own without looking at a model beyond yesterday-I swear LOL!!!! It is just amazing!!!

Have a great day everybody and Gary I hope you and Jeff can get some sleep today-after Friday night and yesterday you need it!!!! Thanks again as always for reading and providing such a great place to discuss/learn about the weather!!

Bill,

I am going to have an extensive analysis of this years LRC on Monday.  So, check back in.  It is absolutely fascinating again this year.  And, it has been exciting, even as we still wait for the first big snow of the season.

I worked last night and the little dusting of snow is beautiful!  It makes me a little sad that when I wake up it will be all gone!  Oh well, hopefully lots more to come!

Bill and everybody else.  You all got 1" of snow or less.  But up here in Jefferson County we were hit harder than all of you evidentally.  We just got our phone back 15 minutes ago, up until that time we had ice everywhere.  There was about a half inch of ice on the antenna that services our phone and internet connection.  Then on top of that ice we had 2"-3" of snow.  I have some pictures I can post later.  There re wires down from ice and wind, wires down from ice on trees and wires down from iced roads that caused wrecks.  So, we would like to take this opportunity to say that this is one of the big storms that Gary discussed.  Saturday morning we had a peak wind of 43mph and the power was out for 5 minutes.  That wind and ice also knocked out our La Crosse weather station.  I'll get the pics uploaded later.

My perfect weather................sunny and 75 except for the week between Christmas eve and New Years Day then I would like a perfect Currier and Ives Christmas card picture as our weather. After that back to 75 and sunny. Can we work on that LRC for next year?  :)

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and will have an outstanding New Year

We should all predict what we think will be the biggest snowstorm and the coldest temp of the season.

This is what I will ask!  I will do a blog tonight asking the question of what do you think our biggest snowstorm will be in the viewing area.  So far I think the highest amount has been around 5 inches from a storm.

The nice dusting we had in Mission is melting fast today. Kind of sad to see it go, but I have to admit it is easier to walk the dog without snow on the ground. You should ask bloggers to share what their favorite thing to do is on a cold, snowy day.

The new Action Weather plus starts tomorrow... right? I can't wait!! Be sure to say something about that!!

We will!  It will be all local and it will evolve a lot in the next month as we decide exactly how we would like it to look.

Snow melts?  Not here in McLouth.  We still have a good snowpack from this storm.  Ice all melted from the wires though finally about 30 minutes ago.

I agree with Marlina10- what's a favorite way to spend a cold snowy day; or you could ask "if we were to have a blizzard and we were stuck inside our homes, what would we do to help us cope- or pass the time- until we could dig out!!"

LRC,  The Chiefs lose and the snow melts....you act as if this was a surprise when we knew both were going to happen.......I love when it melts and we get these little teasing warm-ups, makes the next snow so much nicer, nothing worse than brown icky snow, with an icy crust over it. I love every twisty topsy turvy thing Midwest weather throws at us, whats not to love...changes daily.

Gary, I think an excellent question would be, What is the factor that determines who gets more snow in the metro area, North Verses South...seems like this conversation is always a topic on the blog. Do the City temps really create a "dome" effect?

Gary,

How about a prediction of the # of days until the next snowfall?  According to the LRC we are going into the more quiet part of the cycle, it might get a good debate going until the exciting part of the cycle returns.

I just realized that the windstorm Saturday morning left part of someone's roof hanging in a tree behind my house.

Just let the early morning hours of the 9th stay clear.  I don't need any delays getting to KCI that morning.

gary what about this question ( how many tornado's have been reported in the month of December in the Kansas City  metro since reporting data began.

Not a bad question, but I don't know the answer.  I will have to look into that.
