New Year's Eve Weather...Snow Pictures!

Watch NBC Action News HD for Kansas City's most accurate forecast at 5, 6, & 10 p.m.

Good Wednesday bloggers!  2009 is just around the corner.  Weather conditions look very quiet tonight, although it will be windy and cold with wind chills in the teens.  Temperatures will hold nearly steady in the low 20s.  Overnight readings may actually rise just a bit.

Please see my New Year's Eve request below the pictures!

I was in Wisconsin and Minnesota over the past 8 days.  When I first arrived in the Milwaukee area the snow depth was pretty incredible.  For the snow lovers on this blog the picture below is for you.  That is a yard stick in the lawn which measured a snow depth of 18"!

On Christmas Day we traveled to Minnesota, and on the 26th I was able to do a little snowmobiling.  It was a mild day with highs in the low 40s.  This was the same day that it was in the 60s in Kansas City.  There was not as much snow in Minnesota compared to Wisconsin, but enough to snowmobile.  I took my daughters Avery and Ella for their first ever snowmobile rides.  Avery who is in the picture with me didn't like the ride nearly as much as Ella who is a year younger.

Here is my New Year's Eve request...and I need your help!  Since I will be at work tonight and can't really celebrate New Year's Eve like year's past...I want you to bring me to your party.  Here is what I mean...during our 10 p.m. newscast...flip on NBC Action News during my weathercast and have your party goers, kids, or pets jump next to the TV and take a picture.  This way I will be part of someone's New Year's Eve party!  Then email the picture to jnelson@nbcactionnews.com  and I will post a few of the pictures in the blog Thursday, and show the best one on NBC Action News New Year's Day at 5 p.m. and on Weather Plus!

Now a bit more on the weather.  The next couple of days look quiet with highs in the 40s.  Friday is probably a bit warmer than Thursday.  Late Thursday a Pacific cold front will drop in, but the air behind the front really isn't much cooler.  And on the heels of the front will be a mild push of air associated with the next storm.  The storm that arrives this weekend looks a lot like one or two other storms earlier in the season.  The jet stream won't be phased this weekend, and I think the northern branch of the jet will be the big winner when it comes to snow.  For us, right now Saturday looks to be in the 40s, maybe 50s if the push of mild air really comes in full force.  Mainly cloudy with a chance of rain showers on Saturday.  As the colder air moves in the rain may end as some snowflakes early Sunday.  One thing is certain, Sunday afternoon looks much colder than Saturday.  So get ready for a pretty good swing in temps once again.

Here is the surface map from the 18Z GFS for Sunday.  Notice the surface low over southern Canda, and another over the south-central Plains.

After this system moves by there will be another storm that nears the area late Monday into Tuesday.  The early week storm is very similar to another earlier this year.  Then again who would be surprised...not us.

Have a happy and safe New Year and thank you for making this the #1 weather blog anywhere!

I'm jealous of that picture! I've never been in snow that deep in my life. The deepest I can remember is 10 inches.

I think the deepest snow I've been in was Marquette, MI in 2001...snow depth was probably 25-30" at its greatest.

Rub it in...all that snow....totally jealous!

Both areas that I was in took a big hit on their snow depth with some rain and days in the 40s.

I did see that for the calendar year of 2008, Madison, WI recorded 111" of snow!  That is crazy!

Jeremy -

Great photos - glad you enjoyed the great white north!  We spent the holiday up north as well and enjoyed the deep snowpack for Christmas.

What part of MN did you visit?  I lived there for about 8 years during and after completing my first degree.

Happy New Year!

********************

I was in Windom, MN....about 30 miles north of the Iowa border in the southwest part of the state.  I think I would have traded a couple of the days in the snow for the 67 degree day in Kansas City:)

The winter activities up north make life easier in the winter.  Kansas City gets snow, and lakes can ice over, but the amount of ice and snow just aren't enough to invest in snowmobiling or ice fishing.  Plus the ice doesn't really get thick enough to safely fish on around here.

I should have taken a picture of people driving their vehicles on the ice to go ice fishing.  People that have never seen this before often freak out.

What is the snow like in Great Bend, Neb? What do you think the weather will be like there on Valentines weekend? The husband and I were thinking of going up there to watch trains over that weekend. We did not want to make hotel reservations without checking with you guys first.

Jeremy, Happy New Year!!!  Hopefully you can celebrate after the 10pm news.  That snow looks amazing it looks like you had a great time snowmobiling. Did you enjoy the "Annie" show?

*******************

The snow was enjoyable since I was able to play in it and didn't have to drive anywhere:)

The show last night was a lot of fun.  The lady that plays Miss Hannigan did a great job, plus she played at least 2 other roles in the musical.

95rred,
You can always go an look at my blog at koamtv.com.  This is something that I update daily much like kshb does.  I am in SW MO, SE KS, NE OK, NW AR area.  You guys are in a better spot for wintry weather this year than I am in.  However, KC isn't in the best of spots either.  I still think that one or maybe two storm systems may come together that could give us some good winter weather.  However, we have to admit that the northern plains will continue to get smacked over and over again.  It is just kinda sad with all of the arctic air that we are seeing this year.
Over the next 3 weeks we will mainly be in a NW flow.  This means a lot of temperature swings with fast moving systems.  Hopefully we could see a one or two that organize to give us something in this part of the pattern.  We will have the system that digs into the SW US that happened late in November return here in about 2 and a half weeks.  That system will give us some potential.  After that, we have to wait until the active stretch late in the month into the first couple of weeks in February.  Again, I still think one has to come together to give us one good snow.  We will see.
I will tell you right now that I do think the spring is going to be a very interesting one dealing with severe weather.  I have been looking way ahead over the past couple of nights and we could see some wild weather.  However, my fingers are still crossed for the next 2 months to see something that is worth getting extremely excited about.

Yes and no Jeremy.  I know Gary and I are in pretty much the same line of thinking.  I have always just broken down very week by week for years now.  After working at KSHB and moving down here I started the month long forecast to lay out the pattern a simply as possible.  I hope you have had a chance to look at this years pattern with Gary.  Glad you had a safe trip with all of the snow.  I wish we could see that here, lol

When you say "Push of Mild Air" are you talking about rediculous wind gusts again over 35+MPH? I have had my fill of wind this winter.

Maybe more in the 15-25 mph range.

Glad you enjoyed your break, Jeremy.  Looks like you had a good time.  I have said it before, but want to say it again - you have come along way since joining NBCACTIONNEWS.

I remember your first blogs and thought - "oh boy"...but since and especially in the last 6 months, you have done a fantastic job in your entries.  This one is no exception..the engagement, the picture idea, and active responses to comments...very good.

Anyway, I think the pattern is certainly fascinating this year, and more detail is upcoming.  This pattern is very complex and will make heroes and fools out of many this year.

;-)

I remember seeing you at that first bloggers meeting and thinking...'oh boy'...j/k

I'm glad I was able to leave the snow behind in WI & MN.

Your posts are dead on Doug.     It is very frustrating to have the cold air in place and not get the storms cranking.    Every time we seem to get a good shot of moisture, we get a surge of warm weather to keeping the snow at bay.    I think you guys will get a nice storm before we do in metro KC.    Springfield area seems overdue, since they seem to get blasted almost every year.

Either way, it has been a fascinating winter, esp looking at it through the LRC colored glasses and knowing what is to come.    Its going to get really cold again...that we can count on!!!

Happy New Year and stay safe

Looking forward to seeing what the weather brings for 2009. I upgraded my cable the other day and was able to watch storm chasers....wow what a great show. I ended up watching 6 hours (DVR) of it.....most of the time they were in central and weastern KS. I would LOVE to hang with Reed for a week and watch him work. Good evening Weather Team,

I currently live in Lawrence and went to tune into your channel since the news was starting at five only to find it had been switched to the Topeka feed.  Looking at http://www.sunflowerbroadband.com it looks like cable customers out here won't be able to get the channel due to some sort of carriage fee.  I've been a loyal viewer for many years (who wouldn't be, given that you guys have the most accurate forecast around?) but now I'll have to find somewhere else.

Bummer!

Happy New Years/2009 to the Weather Team and to all of you wonderfull Bloggers!!!

Welcome back Jeremy-are you getting situated/back into the routine?? Sounds and looks like you had a great time in as Getty Lee would say the Great White North (Take off to the Great Whie North-oops-sorry-a little early 80's nastalgia got to me!!!)

Those pictures are awesome Jeremy-I can't really say anything more as I am speechless LOL!!

You did get me thinkging however-as much as I love snow I had to admit to myself that if I lived in an area where snow was garunteed it most likely would not be the obsession it is for me now. The rarity of snow here and the many factors to get it to actually snow 3 plus inches here is what I think makes it so cool to me. Also, growing up here in the late 70's and early 80's when we had 5 blockbuster snow winters (which in my very humble opinion has really skewed the idea of winter in this area-those years were kind of every 100 year type winters and were not any where close to the norm) I have many fond memories of family time playing in the snow, snow football and ice hockey. Great times!!!

Thanks for sharing those pictures-again, they are just fantastic!!

Thanks so much for a great year on the Blog-the entire weather team does such an incredible job interacting with the community-that (and of course  the forcasts!!) is what makes you so awesome!! You guys are Tight!!! Have a great day and again, Happy 2009!!

The picture on the snowmobile... Looks like the street was half-plowed. You sure that wasn't in Wisconsin? ;) I always lived on that street...(if it were plowed at all and I never had a snowmobile) The 60s did feel pretty nice after -2.

I bet you're glad you're not Madison anymore, I know I am. That is biblical snow. The winter of 2000 up there was enough to chase me away, I don't know what I would have done up there the last 2?!?

Anywho, Happy New Year to you and everyone on the wx blog. May '09 be the best year yet!
