Good balmy Saturday! A warm front clearly lifted north of the metro today helping to surge warm air into the region. As of this writing it is 60 at KCI and 66 Downtown, and a remarkable 70 in Sedalia! The record high for today is 65, not quite sure if KCI will squeeze that out with clouds just north of the airport. Today is more typical of early to mid April weather when average highs are in the 60s!
The visible satellite clearly shows the location of the warm front with the locations enjoying sunshine being south of the front. Notice how the warm front is just north of the metro area. St. Joe has been in the low 50s today.

A day like today followed by a night of plunging temperatures is becoming the norm this winter and once again tonight we will see a huge temperature drop. Likely waking up to teens by morning! If you open your windows today, don't forget to close them this evening!
Here is the surface map as of 2 p.m. It is amazing to see teens over south-central Nebraska and temperatures around 80 in northeast Oklahoma.

The big temperature swings will likely continue in the next couple of weeks. Later in January we will likely see some really cold arctic air plunge into the region. Look at the temperatures across Alaska...-50s! And that is not a wind chill factor. As the polar vortex moves back towards Canada as the cycle progresses will get more shots of arctic air, and they will likely be stronger than the one's we saw in December.
Here is a look at a nice winter afternoon in Alaska.

Enjoy the warm weather the rest of this afternoon, it is back to reality by Sunday. Also, a few snow showers may occur later this evening. What a strange winter!
