Update....A week of tough forecasts!

Happy Sunday afternoon everyone,

Here is a quick update.  Look at the 18z NAM's forecast of the 850 mb temperatures and flow valid when we think there is a chance of snow on Monday morning.  Temperatures are well above freezing all the way into Iowa at this point, but you must remember that the layer isn't saturated.  Look at the map:

So, even if we have a quick band of precipitation on Monday morning it looks like it will be rain or a mixture more than snow, unless it lasts for longer than 30 minutes and the column would then saturate. The chance of it lasting more than 30 minutes seems slim at best right now.  It is something we will be tracking early in the morning.  And, then there is another cold shot heading our way for the afternoon.  This is forecast problem #1 this week.  We will go into the other challenges on Monday.  The bottom line is that we are still in the wrong spot for any significant precipitation.

Previous entry below:

Good morning bloggers,

The full moon is setting in the west and a rather tough week for forecasting weather begins today.  There are Arctic fronts lining up with fast moving disturbances that could bring us some brief precipitation events beginning on Monday.  Monday's precipitation event is one of the more interesting of the season for various reasons.

  1. Warmer air will try to surge in just as the chance of precipitation arrives
  2. It could be rain, sleet, snow, or possibly all three types, but only for an hour or two
  3. We probably won't know for sure until it is right on top of us Monday morning
  4. A strong cold front should blast in Monday afternoon

So, this is Monday's situation. Then you have Tuesday and Wednesday where another even stronger front is approaching.  There should be another warm up ahead of this mid-week front. It is going to be a very challenging week for the weather forecaster.

Have a great Sunday.  I will update the blog later today.

Good morning to you sir!! Amazing-the Get Smart Affect even applies to Sundays LOL!!!!! I had just posted in the previous Blog-that is so funny!!! It is likely best to just leave it there as I think I fell several times going out on a limb!!

This week is going to be fun to track and watch develop-2 strong fronts with maybe just a bit of a twist-sound like fun to me!!!! I have been thinking that there have been several winters where I would have paid good money for fronts like we have seen so while it has been dry the past couple of weeks it has been fun and a great learning experience following!!!!

I think (the limb is really cracking here) this week is very similar to Novermber 18th-23rd but now we have so much colder air to work with. Am I even on the right track here??

Well, I'm back to PowerPoints on Nation State development in Nigeria and the Revolution of 1979 in Iran-looking forward to following the front tomorrow and maybe a little "twist"!!!

Have a fantastic day!!

Bill,

I know.  I got up early. Jeremy Goodwin is filling in for us this weekend, and I started working on the blog, then I noticed you had just commented. We are good at this timing even on Sunday.  Then the NAM came out with almost nothing tomorrow morning with 850 temps near or above zero despite thickness values of 534 and lower.  It will be an interesting week of weather, and perhaps it will come together later in the month or in February.

Do you have any idea when the rain and/or sleet and/or snow would fall?

A challenging week?  Outstanding, the fun begins.  Now I can watch all the weather people from Topeka to KC to Springfield and see who really blows it.  Only sad part is its not May so nobody will be screaming grab your bicycle helmet and sleep in the basement.

-----------------

Maybe you can watch and look for the forecasters that actually get it right.  Let's look at it this way, at least I am looking at it that way.

Have a great Sunday.

Stormdog:  Spring cannot come too soon.  Climatologically, January is one of, if not the driest,  month in this part of the country, so I would not be terribly surprised to see January come in with less than on inch of precip, and if this NW flow scenario with a Polar vortex stubbornly hanging to our NE, it could be drier than that.  Of course, we will freeze our derriers off (ala 1977 in Oklahoma when I was there).    But then again, if one accepts a recurring pattern/cycle, there should be one more active period somewhere...perhaps...but nature has a nasty habit of frustrating even the most talented forecasters.

Come on Spring, the heck with this winter garbage.

Later,
Dog

I am not ready for spring yet, dog!

Gary I can think of one in Topeka, one in KC and one in Springfield that will definitely hit it on the nose or within 2 degrees and arrival of any precip by an hour or so.  The others will be all over the place.  Now oddle enough, I am starting to get in the mood for a good 5" snowfall.  I would prefer to see it on a weekend but we need the precip and insulating blanket so bad.  The winter has been cold, but all these ups, downs and repeat that it hasn't seemed that bad.  Heck, we had sweat bee's out here a couple of days ago.  This might turn out to be a headache year for bugs and creepy critters.  So by 10PM are you going to have a fairly accurate picture for us on any precip or do we need to wait and see in the morning?  Anything you guys say at 41 on the 10PM I listen pretty careful too, but I can tell you for sure, I am listening even harder come that 6:30AM radio broadcast.  No place but this blog and the LRC page covers the weather so close and accurately in this country.  Sure glad your here instead of sunny Florida playing with hurricanes.

Hmm... strong NW flow with dry but cold highs coming south from Canada into the plains/midwest... heavy snow across the Great Lakes and north east, Santa Ana winds in California, yes this is definitely the "November" part of the pattern... If I remember right about a week before Thanksgiving there was a strong Canadian high that came down and gave St. Joe a low of 10 degrees in November, so I think the cold blast coming in later this week is the "same one" that gave us that low in November I think...

Patriot I saw the moon.  Super bright and we could clearly see the geese as they were flying again last night.  Wave after wave around 11PM, all headed south unfortunately.

The moon last night was beautiful!  Davidmcg- you were mentioning the sweat bees- I had two flies in my house this morning!  I thought for sure they'd be gone or hibernating by now!  Guess that's what happens when we get some warmer days.  Personally I'm not minding the lack of snow as I'd rather not have to drive in the stuff- the cold I don't mind. Spring is still one of my favorite seasons so eagerly awaiting it's arrival- someday!  Dea

January is boring.  I am ready for a more exciting weather pattern.  THough I am sure the weather team enjoys getting caught up on sleep when the pattern is somewhat boring.

This is a rough stretch of the pattern.   The ground needs some form of moisture.

I count 5 clippers hitting Iowa, Chicago, MI, OH... all in less than a 2 week span.   It will bring them blizzard conditions many times with the passing of the storm and will add to their already unreal snow totals.    It is either feast or famine.

Eh, looks like mostly rain unless you are in NE.  Man, January is just not a great month at all.  Looks like our only chance at anything will be Feb.  I forgot how lacking the snow is here in KC after moving back here this past April.  Why do we get soooo much rain in the summer but nothing in times like this?

Good milky moon lit morning to you sir!! Currently sitting at around 31 here this morning under a milky sky-the clouds are trying to thicken up and there are some spotty echoes on radar but man the atmosphere is for sure having trouble saturating this morning. There was beautiful halo around the moon last night at around 11:00 P.M.-very cool indeed!!!

A couple random observations this morning-here goes nothing LOL!!!

1. Looking at the 10Z surface charts I think the surface low is currently sitting on the East Central North/South Dakota Border and the wind shift line is currently back in central Kansas. The interesting thing is that pocket of upper 30’s to low 40’s in south central Kansas-will be interesting to see if that pocket of warmer air punches into the area here in the next 3-4 hours. The other interesting thing to see I think is the water vapor imagery this morning-if I am seeing it correctly, one can sure see why we are so dry-all the moisture either from the Pacific or the Gulf is being shunted due east into Florida and up the East Coast. Not a surprise considering where we are in the pattern but it is interesting to see.

2. Looking at the GFS and RUC it looks like that wind-shift line gets through here by around 1:00 but the really colder air lags behind until about 6:00 or so this evening-the surface charts this morning seems to back that up-I think?? One thing for sure, there is some really cold air sitting in Canada for these fronts to work with!!

3. Tuesday night into Wednesday morning is really going to be interesting to watch to see how much we can warm up-the 6Z GFS hints at the possibility that we may be warmer at 11:00 P.M. Tuesday night than at 3:00 P.M. in the afternoon. How far will we rise before the bottom really drops out Wednesday mid-morning. That will be the other fun thing to watch-the front on Wednesday. There does not appear to be any lag in the cold air on Wednesday-that front will get your attention!!!

4. Man, that clipper Wednesday is really going to strengthen once it gets past us-that dominant long wave is really delivering the goods especially in this part of the pattern!!

5. Looking ahead a bit and going out on a huge limb:  both the GFS and Euro are still hinting at some southern energy for the Sunday/Monday time frame though they both kind of close it off in Northern Mexico and kind of squash it. Will be interesting to watch this as I think (Huge I think!!) this relates to what we saw around Thanksgiving weekend.

Well, it may be overall dry this week and while we for sure could use some moisture, these two fronts and cold air intrusions are going to be fun/fascinating to watch and track. If only just one of those clippers could have dug just a bit further south and west this week…It will also I think (if I am looking at it correctly LOL) be interesting to see how Sunday-Tuesday next week comes together-maybe we can get some energy to dive under the NW flow and give us some moisture return.

Have a great day and as always thanks for reading!!!

Bill,

Good sleepy morning to you.  Never easy getting use to the morning show.  The wake up call at 1:40 a.m. is never a good thing:)

Once again there are exciting fronts to track this week, but overall it looks dry.  Not a huge surprise if you look back to November.  There was an extended dry spell there too, before the active part of the cycle kicked in.  Maybe we should start a countdown to the active part of the cycle!
