Two Alberta Clippers

Good morning bloggers,

There are two Alberta Clippers that will affect us this week. The first one moves by today, and the second more powerful one moves by on Wednesday. Look below at the 1 PM forecast from the RUC model:

The front will move through this afternoon, but before it does there is a good chance of a big warm up to near 50 degrees or higher ahead and near the front.  This is an Alberta Clipper, a storm that moves southeast that clips the province of Alberta in Canada, thus it's name. If you are northeast of the surface low it will snow and a quick 6 inches can fall.  But, we are not northeast of the surface low.  We are in the subsidence part of the clipper which will lead to that warm up around noon today.  A few snow/sleet/rain showers are possible this morning as a little rising motion band moves by, but it appears it will leave most of us dry as we still wait for our first measurable precipitation of 2009.

This next map below, is a much stronger Alberta Clipper.  This system will blast an Arctic front through us by Wednesday afternoon and temperatures will be heading toward below zero by Thursday morning in some spots near us.  Again, this one will not bring more than a few snow showers for us as the surface low is passing by to our north just like toay's system.

How does this fit with our LRC based forecast we issued last week?  Here is the forecast for this stretch of days that we issued a few days ago:

January 10-18th:  North flow aloft from Canada develops, but should break down by the end of this period.  Some rather strong blasts from the Arctic will fully affect the northern plains and the Great Lakes states.  Kansas City will get two or three cold blasts from the Arctic build up that is just waiting to attack us.  There may be some minor precipitation events with some small snow accumulations across the viewing area with disturbances coming in from the north and northwest.

Go to www.LRCWeather.com to learn more about the LRC.

We will have more later today as the front approaches.  Congratulations to NBC Action News Meteorologist Brett Anthony on his accomplishments in Florida over the weekend. Brett did a half marathon and a full marathon and he completed both.  He said "I didn't want the experience to end.  Meeting Goofy after completing the two races was a hi-lite of my life yesterday."

Have a great day.  And, remember it should warm up nicely before the cold front moves in. We should be used to these changes by now.

Gary

Thrilling Gary, just absolutely thrilling.  These clippers can just cut and run back north.  That jet stream map about says it all on those clippers.  Well its winter, we have clippers every year.  We usually have snow, but not yet this year.

I have decided that I don't like the term "brutally cold"! :-)

Oh yea, those forecasted lows for Thursday and Friday aren't nice at all.  So what do you think is Feb. 10, give or take a week,  still looking pretty close to our big one this year?

Gary, when you say "A more powerful Clipper" by mid week. Do you mean in terms of temperature or wind speeds? Today's forcasted gutsts of 40 MPH already have me on edge.

*****************

There will be gusty winds Wednesday into Thursday, but the big change will be the arctic air that spills in.

I'm going to start litter box training my dog today! Zero degrees is no fun while waiting for her to do her business.

Thanks Jeremy, gonna have to hunker down again like I have all winter. I'll just go to the basement to sleep tonight so I won't have to hear the wind blast the house.

This has got to be one of the windiest winters on record... not much moisture yet, but definately blustery.

I thought that they were called clippers by "old timers" becuase they were a fast moving storm, similar to the type of ship with the same name: Clipper.

Gary,

You need to put the arrow pointing to Brett on the second picture as well.  It is very hard to tell which one is Goofy!!

So, funny!  I should have done that.

How do you guys know Jeremy Goodwin? Does he have any knowledge about the LRC?

He is the Chief Meteorologist in Topeka, KS and I have introduced the LRC to him during the past year.

FredSouder, according to Wikipedia, both are correct.

Alberta Clipper just provides the location of the one we are talking about.  When I lived in Montana, I remember frequent mention of the chinooks about everyone looked forward to.  Wikipedia refers to the chinooks in the same article.

Well so much for my 12 inches of snow I wanted today!! :o)....a girl can dream right?? I am looking forward to winter staying put for a bit. I can not wait for the return of the active weather...this is starting to get very boring and I do remember saying this during the last boring stretch. Great job Brett on your run....I am tired just thinking about it. Have a great day everyone.

Monica,

Is today your birthday?  Happy Birthday!  At least you may get snow by the end of the evening.  Not much, but some snowflakes may fall tonight.

Will the strongs winds subside overnight say after midnight? So we are looking at a 5-6 hour window of really strong winds - Or will they howl into Tuesday?

Trying to determine if I should bring the horses in tonight if it is going to be brutally cold for a long time with the strong winds.

******************

There will be a good 6-8+ hour window of strong winds.  The winds should ease by 6am Tuesday.  And by afternoon be in the 5-10 mph range.  That wind tonight will get your attention though!

Blizzard warning in effect for Chicago after midnight tonight until noon tomorrow...their truly rough winter continues.  Chicago is not placed under blizzard warnings very much it seems.  Not expecting more than 2 to 5 inches of snow, but with the expected wind speeds and cold temps the conditions reach blizzard criteria.

Thanks again Jeremy. I wil bring them in so I won't worry about them being cold. :)
I'm so ready for moderate temperatures with less wind!!!

Only 9-1/2 weeks until Spring. I think I can make it.

Yes we are definitely on the edge sort of... if we were a bit to the north and east we would be talking about all of the windy snow events and near blizzards, if we were farther to the south and west we would be wondering if this windy dry winter would be the start of a drought, with all of the snow to the north though, it will be interesting to see how spring plays out since when the jet weakens maybe that will allow the "weaker" long term long wave trough to the west of us to show better so spring could be interesting... oh well even though it is dry it is still o.k. since there are still wind storms to watch, so it is not like we are not having "stormy weather" it is just that the "stormy weather" is not manifesting itself in the form of "precipitation" in this part of the pattern, and after last years "super winter LRC" I can't complain.
