Tracking A Warm-up & Today's Snow

Watch NBC Action News HD at 5, 6, & 10 p.m. for Kansas City's most accurate forecast!

What an exciting day across the area!  Our first measurable snow this year and now we are tracking a push of warm air ahead of an Alberta Clipper.

Please send in your snow totals and we will show them on NBC Action Weather Plus and on our newscasts.

Here is a look at the incredible temperature spread across the region today.  The warmer air will begin surging in here tonight!

The temperatures will likely be in the upper 10s for a time this evening, and then begin to climb as SE-S winds pick up at 10-20 mph.  The clipper moves north of us so the milder air will rush in, especially after midnight.  By Saturday morning temperatures should be in the 30s.  A quick run to the mid to upper 40s is possible on Saturday before a cold front drops through the area.  The isn't a true arctic front so the temps may slide a little in the afternoon, but the bigger change will be from Saturday to Sunday.  Highs on Sunday will probably be 10 degrees cooler than Saturday.  Enjoy the snow early Saturday, it likely will be melting quickly this weekend.

For those longing for warmer days it looks like next Wednesday or Thursday could make a run to 60.  Here is a look at the 18Z GFS 500mb map.  The ridge should translate to a nice warm-up.  With our next possible storm beginning to show up.

Gary is gone until next Tuesday so I will be in for all the shows thru next Monday.  I did some digging around this evening and looking back at November.  Coming up on Saturday I will show some what I think are pretty cool LRC relations.  So check back Saturday.  And if you are looking for an accurate forecast on weekend mornings make sure to tune into NBC Action News Today from 8-9 a.m. both days!

Have a great day and thank you for stopping by Kansas City's best weather blog!

Just got in on the tail end of last blog..
so I'm reposting

How about this for a Kansas City forecast
Today:
Chance of cloudy or sunshine,
unseasonably hot or freezing;
chance of rain and wind....
snow possible or hail ...
or stuff from the sky for which
there isn't even a name yet !

Would that please the ones who are
so critical of this team?

Give 'em a break !

Jeremy, is the next Alberta clipper on Sat? And will this be another 40+MPH wind event.

My horses manes have been getting tangled with all this wind. I spend several hours a week untangling and brushing. Getting very tired of it! I am happy though that it has been dry this long... no mud to brush off . But there will be now when the snow thaws!

*******************

Winds will probably be in the 15-25 mph range.  I don't think 40mph winds are in the cards this time.

Great job team once again.   While others might want a 24hr notice on a small event, you guys handled it perfect IMO.     You guys did mention that the models had this wave of energy but it was a tight band and gave no promise too far out.   Last night, Gary put out 1" for the metro and nailed it.    If you are going to be critical of his forecast, I cannot imagine what you think of the other stations, with one calling for less than a dusting... whatever that means.

Again great job as the ground needed this moisture bad.   I cannot wait till it really gets going.    I will enjoy next week while I can and soak up those temps :)

McLouth KS 0.75" snow.  Right now the temp has dropped to 19 I thought temps were supposed to continue rising or level, not drop.  Did forecasters, not just at 41 forget to take into consideration the effect even a small snowpack would make?  Doesn't matter, its game weekend and I have too much meat to smoke and 4AM will come to early around here.  Have a great night and weekend.

********************

A temperary drop is likely this evening...we just showed 16 on our newscast.  Then rising temps as winds pick up after midnight.  The snowpack will play a part this evening, but sometimes winds can 'deliver the goods' so to speak.  In this case the milder air.

I know its pretty far off- a week, but is this storm this coming friday look bigger than todays or is it to far off to tell?

*****************

The upcoming storm is one that has been on our 'radar' per the LRC.  It has potential.  The 18Z GFS both Jeff Penner and I thought was a little out to lunch.  We thought the 12Z GFS fit out thinking better.

.9" at the fort.  sounds like a well distributed snow event.  its nice to get some sort of precip to fall, its becoming quite a dry season.

Thanks for the total.  Jacob in Lee's Summit is now up to 11.2" of snow for the season...KCI is at 7.6".  Slowly creeping up with the active pattern yet to come.

I had to go down to Springfield MO this morning for business. While I was on 71 highway I was listening to a local radio station from KC who has a morning TV weather guy doing weather updates ( it was not Gary) I had to laugh because he had phone them in and they were recorded until after 8:00 AM and he kept saying "Just a few snow flurries in the morning nothing to be worried about" as I was watching cars spin off the road in front of me. After 8:00 he came on live and said 1/2 inch to maybe an inch.

***********************

Thanks for the note.  There were some huge differences on forecasts this morning, I'm just glad we were on the 'winning' team:)

Has the front already come through Topeka and Lawrence?  Its warmer there or is it just because they don't have snow on the ground?

I think Lawrence has snow on the ground.  But those areas are closer to the milder air and also the winds are picking up a bit there.

Good snow glistening in the starry light evening to you sir!! It is kind of chilly out this evening but you can sure feel the warmer air working its way into the area. That was some surface map you posted-what a cool winter to follow this year!!!

Well, I got a ½ Get Smart Affect this morning and I intended to Blog back in and give a total but I winded up spending the day rebooking flights and hotels for the school senior trip (the original trip was just too expensive so had to start from scratch!!) and right now I have a full blown sleep over event blowing through my house LOL!!

As was reported earlier we ended up with close to an inch here in Lawrence-we had a decent band move through between 6:00-6:30 where it snowed as hard as it had all year-man it was awesome!! The boys are with me this weekend so we went out and caught some snowflakes on the tongue before school and then all had a little shoveling experience this afternoon-it was fantastic!!

I think one interesting aspect of this week has been how a regime of the LRC can produce some different results at different parts of the year-in mid to late November when the NW flow was at its strongest (I have thought all week we are looking at the period from around 11-21-30) we had 3 fronts come through and we bottomed out here in Lawrence at around 15 or so-this time, with the NW flow in full swing, we get a clipped by a dump of arctic air-same regime but deeper into winter, these fronts had more punch. Just a little something I have been thinking about!!

It will be interesting to follow the next 7-9 days and the warm up next week is to me right on schedule as I think we are now seeing the relaxing of the NW flow and are entering into the transitional phase before the active cycle really kicks in-very similar to what we saw in late November. I haven’t had a chance to really look at any models today but the 0z ensembles of the GFS last night really were showing the ridge/height rises developing in the Eastern Pacific and the operational runs of both the Euro and GFS continue to show this as well on various runs. Am I making any sense at all?? LOL

Now that I have probably made myself look quite foolish with paragraphs three and four I am going step away from the computer and make sure the sleep over doesn’t wipe out my house!!!! LOL Have a great night Jeremy-I am sure I will “bother” you several times this weekend and on Monday….LOL

Take care and as always thanks for reading!!!

Bill,

This weekend is a tricky little forecast temperature-wise.  We may trim a few degrees off of the high for Saturday, but 40s still look good.  I found some fun LRC stuff to share on Saturday.  I kind of stumbled onto it without even trying:)  Maybe we can share the limb tomorrow:)

119th & Ridgeview in Olathe 1.5", measurement was just taken. As "powdery" as that snow was I'll bet we were closer to 2" earlier in the day. Dog, take heed my fellow warm weather brother, there are 12 months in a year and 9 of them AREN'T winter! Think warm man.

Dodge City had a low of 8 and a high of 62! Of course that has to do with the strong westerly downslope they had and the fact that they have only had 0.32 inch since October 23!

Jeremy - its amazing some of the things you can find out of the blue.  Just today while researching a request for someone, I stumbled upon a very nice bit of data that to date had been hidden to me.  Oddly, in looking at the precip for KMCI in the last 30 days, we are in a surplus!

Did not get a chance to get a good measurement on the little bit of snow we've got up here in Holt, but if I had to guess I would say about 1/2" or a little more since I did not get home until this afternoon.

For all the ones that are thinking the forcast was a bust, they must not watch the forcast on the news at 10.Last night Gary said 1/2 to1 inch maby a little more in some spots. That to me was a nail on the head, with the cold temps and fast forming snow.

Keep up the good work and get some rest after Gary gets back, you will need it in the next few weeks.

A question for anyone on the weather team. Last night, on the radar loop that showed the area of snow moving south from S. Dakota across Nebraska, I noticed a band of clouds that preceded the main disturbance. It almost looked like an outflow boundary, but seemed much larger. Anyone have an explanation?

*********************

I'd have to see the satellite picture and setup...I was off on Thursday.  Off the top of my head I can't think of what that was.  Maybe someone else saw it and can help us out.

Quite a bit of the snow we had melted yesterday afternoon, hoping to warm up fast today and get the rest of it out of here!  The ground will sure mud up quick as it's still so saturated, I'm going to get Windy's walk and run in early to escape some of the muck.  I'm so glad we have a cement backyard, I knew when we put it in last year it would be days like this that would make us thankful.  Paola got about 1" of snow, currently it's 28 degrees, I'm hoping we hit 50 today...fingers crossed!  Have a great weekend everyone.

Deb,

Good morning and thanks for checking in!  50...maybe not yet.  But 40s should feel pretty good today after the bitter cold the past couple of days.  Enjoy the snow this morning, it may be almost gone by the end of today:)  Have a great weekend!
