Strange weather pattern....January 23, 2009

Good afternoon bloggers,

If you see snow this afternoon or evening, please post a comment in the blog and let us know where you live and what you are experiencing!

From 67 degrees Thursday to a chance of light snow Friday evening.  We have experienced another big temperature drop and more are on the horizon.  I do believe it is going to snow this evening across many parts of the viewing area, but it should be light with trace amounts to around a half inch.  And, with the wind blowing if it does snow it will just blow it around a bit.  We will be tracking this light snow potential on LIVE:ESP tonight on NBC Action News.

I will add some graphics in a few minutes on why I am calling this a strange weather pattern.....this morning I was wiped out and took a long nap.  I am sorry about that.  O.K.  Here we go... I am awake and preparing for the 5, 6, and 10 PM newscasts on NBC Action News.  We will have some special graphics to describe the following set up so be sure to watch tonight and let me know what you think of the way we decided to show this strange set up.

This first map below is the 500 mb forecast by the GFS model valid at 6 PM Sunday enening. Remember the 500 mb level is around 18,000 feet up and what I believe to be the best level to pick out some of the smaller scale as well as larger scale upper level storm systems.  The X near Denver is a vorticity maximum, what we call a vort max, and this is heading right into western Kansas Sunday evening. There is a stream of vorticity coming out ahead of this X into northwestern Missouri. If this verifies it will snow along that stream and just north of it.  So we should have some snow on Sunday into Monday from this set up. But, these are just fast moving weak upper level impulses.

This next map is also valid at 6 PM Sunday.  This is the surface set up with the anchor Arctic high over southwestern Canada at this time.  We are in the cold surface air, but a warm front is setting up across Oklahoma. This is just a strange set up and there is not much support to lift the warm front north, so with all of these disturbances coming across there could be some fast moving bands of precipiation in our region for days.  The blue dashed line is the snow/no snow line.  South of this line the precipitation would likely be in the form of freezing rain or sleet.  Remember, we are expecting just very light precipitation with each of these disturbances, so we still do NOT see any major storm systems.

Have a great day.  We do expect some snow tonight and we will be tracking all of these things and bring you Kansas City's most accurate forecast on NBC Action News.  Jeremy Nelson will keep you updated over the weekend and I will be checking in as well.  Have a great Friday Night in the big town.  Stormy the weather dog will be on the air at 5 PM tonight.  Elizabeth will help her do one of her tricks.

Gary, is this next distrubance and it's potential a matter of moisture or a matter of position in regards to snow potential?

It looks like Nebraska and Iowa will get the brunt of the snow this round.    I remember you saying that this storm would get its act together east of us, but it appears it is wanting to stay out west and come out in waves.

Thanks, Joe

Where did Gary say that?  I think you are referencing the wave that moved by late Monday/early Tuesday.

The funny thing is "one of the other stations," claimed earlier this week that this would be a major storm that would produce heavy snow starting Sun evening and not ending until Tuesday afternoon...I though it was funny that they would call for that, 5-6 days away...

Brian, hoping that theory is true, but knowing Gary and company will be right...as always  :)

***************************

I would never forecast a heavy snow event to last 3 days long 5-6 days out.  All that does is get people worried.  Thanks for the heads up though.

I'm happy and proud to say that I never know what "those other people" are forecasting.  I have one place, ok, make it two, the tv and the internet, where I depend on the NBCAction Weather Crew to give me an accurate forecast.

Thanks again Gary, for taking the complex science of weather and putting it in terms I can understand.

Have a great weekend all and hold on to your hat!

Thanks for the post, we love to hear that!

Wow, according to the map on a website that I only really trust for the current map, there is a lot of snow from about St. Joe all the way up to Omaha.  Is this really heavy, accumulating stuff, or what?  My mom is supposed to be heading this way from Nebraska City at about 3:30 and she's really not wanting to drive in a huge mess.

She heard on the radio that it was near white out conditions in Lincoln.  Does she have anything to really worry about for her drive?  : (

********************

Where she is at there is likely some light snow right now.  I would say a little accumulation is possible there in the next few hours.  I don't expect huge problems, but as always, drive as conditions allow.

I think it is interesting that one of the other stations in town (They're pretty Foxy) is talking about how we seem to be in a pattern right now that keeps repeating itself.

I'm sure this person would never give any credit to the LRC but it is interesting that he is noticing the same thing.

It's still 26 in Rulo, NE.  The cold front is certainly taking time to get here.

Attached is a link for cameras around Lincoln Nebraska. It looks like it's coming down pretty good. I don't intend to scare you, just wanted to make you aware so your mom can make the best decision.

the radar echoes are really starting to fill in where the lift is improving into north central/north eastern KS.  looks like several hours of heavy flurries on the way.

Thanks, weatherjunkie.  Actually, she's in Nebraska City, so she's east of Lincoln and leaving there now, to head down I29 into here.

Anyone know how the roads are up north on I29 near the Iowa/Missouri border?  According to the online road conditions, it's partly covered to about St. Joseph.

I was in Iowa this past weekend, they had almost a foot of snow on the ground. I'm sure the last thing they want is more snow, so I think they should send it down to us!

Me again : )  Question for the weather team, or anyone who knows... I'm looking at the animated map on weather.com and it looks like there is snow everywhere -- from Omaha to here and west...  But when I look at the ESP Live Radar or the Interactive map, it doesn't look quite so bad.  So which one is more accurate as far as what is falling and the intensity?

Emmy's...radars can be set for different sensitivity levels. If you set the radar to be very sensitive, it can pick up very light precip, but it also picks up a lot of other stuff that may not be precip. It looks to me like the ESP is set in a mode which is not that sensitive and may be missing some of the lighter snow flurries, while weather.com is in a more sensitive mode.

thanks for asking gary.  i see limited moisture but decent lift in central ks heading due east for the most part.  at this point i would say a heavy dusting is in order especially north of I-70 mainly because it would appear that the echoes are having a tough time passing east of topeka at the moment.  dewpoints are slowly rising.  it looks like upstream they needed ~65-70% RH to get the stuff to fall.  we are sitting in the low-middle 50's at the moment.  se we have some saturating to do(like you mentioned).  there might be a band around the atchison area that could drop closer to 1/2-1" if saturation occurs before maximum lift reaches the area.

------------------

Murph,

There are some jet dynamics that may help out with the lift this evening.  I think a 1 inch band of snow could form in the next two hours.
