Update...Tracking an area of snow

Update at 8 PM:

A band of moderate snow is accumulating and creating some very slick and hazardous driving conditions.  The snow will taper off before we get to an inch in most spots.  I will be tracking it at 10 PM on NBC Action News.

Good evening bloggers,

I am tracking a gradually increasing area of snow to our northwest.  I will add to this blog after the 6 PM newscast, but some accumulation is possible in the next few hours.

O.K.  I was just on at 6 PM and this area of snow doesn't look that impressive.  Some spots could still get a bit more than a dusting up to under an inch and we will monitor this weak disturbance closely.

Let us know if you experience anything more than flurries.

Gary

Anybody care to make a guess about snow potential for this evening into tomorrow?  I have to drive from Warrensburg to Platte County - is the snow goign to be more "up North" in Clay and Platte?  Thank you!  Laura.

--------------

Laura,

I am on in just a minute, but a dusting to an inch is possible.  Let's see how this grows between now and 7 PM.  Saturday will be dry.

Thanks Gary - that answers my question.  Guess I'll go watch you on TV now - have to rewind the DVR!  I heard you babbling away in there but I was on the porch trying to get the dogs to come in and eat so I missed it!

Yep - I try not to watch too much of the news stuff!  They need to come up with a "Good News Station" or something that shows only happy stuff!

its snowing here at the fort.   light snow, but heavier than flurries.  looks good up against the HID street lights with the wind blowing.  this might come down pretty hard if the bands make it to us-there is no radar echo over me right now and its coming down.

Thanks murphy!  I am thinking a half an inch is likely in a few spots.  Keep us updated.  It is getting larger and more organized as it is passing you.

Garden City, KS
last 56 days - 0.01
last 94 days - 0.31
average - 1.95 ( ~16% of normal)

You have to go back to October 21 to see a semi-significant precipitation event with a total of 0.69. That's just one example of the drought building northeast into southern Kansas from Oklahoma and Texas.

Although, I still don't think the drought monitor accurately depicts drought for the high plains.

It's very slick on the highways!  Driving home from OP at around 8:00 and did a 180 on 435 near Nall.  Luckily, everyone managed to avoid it.  Moderate snow blowing in from the SE all the way to Harrisonville, with the heaviest band just north of Belton.  Be safe...it's unpleasant out there.

And how fast were you driving?  Was it on a curve?  Speed limit is what it is in perfect, dry daytime conditions.  Not night, when wet or frozen.  Slowwww downnnnn.  Maintain and extend distance between you and the car(s) in front and either side.  Better off taking just a bit longer to get where you are going than being involved in an accident and being injured or worse.  OK, thats the retired cop in me.

I was driving 45 mph and was going straight as an arrow. :)  Nothing was happening at all...I was giving other cars a wide berth and they were doing the same for me.  I just suddenly started skating across 435 and got lucky.

I just looked outside here in Sedalia, ground, streets, sidewalks and cars are snow covered.  It doesn't look nice out there.  I am glad I don't have anywhere I need to go.  How does Monday look?   I have to drive to Warrensburg for night class, is there a chance they will call off night classes?  I don't like driving in this stuff!

Correction on the .6 inches in Blue Springs, make that .3 inches. Sorry for the original incorrect observation. I did a more accurate measurement this time. Did anyone out there get close to an inch?

Im right there with you Davidmcg people in the city love to tailgate each other no wonder there is so many wrecks my sister drives that way all the time back to the weather I personally hope that the models are wrong and this storm moves more south. The models call for big time snows in Nebraska (keep in mind a big time snow for me now is 6'') how do we get missed out every time? About a half inch of snow in Wellington

This is the part of the LRC that sends me into hibernation mode, next week looks miserable, kind of like this cold I've caught.  I haven't had a cold in years but managed to let this one slip up on me.  Anyway, I digress, about 1/4" of snow on the ground here in Paola, Popeye the chihuhua, seems to think it's my fault after the second time of telling him to "hurry up" outside he finished and came scrambling inside.  I have to drive up to the city this morning, I sure hope the road conditions are manageable, I dont' worry about my driving, it's the others I worry about.  I'm heading out for a very quick walk around a few blocks with Windy, need a little exercise and then right back in, I'll finish up at the gym later and I'll take her for a run this afternoon.  Currently 7 degrees in Paola with windchill making it feel like -6.....oh how I long for a hot, dry spring and summer.  No drought in Paola, ground will be soggy for quite sometime......
