Lots of Cold...and Snow?...UPDATE

Watch NBC Action News HD this weekend from 8-9 a.m. and at 5 & 10 p.m. for updates on our upcoming snow chances!

*************************************

A quick update on the snow chances for tonight.  Best chances are still near or north of I-70.  The greatest accumulation will occur along and north of highway 36.  I'm showing detailed snowfall forecast graphics on the news tonight at 5 & 10 pm.  But in general there could be 1-3" of snow, especially near and north of highway 36.  The best chance of 3" would be a little closer to the Iowa border.  From KCI to just south of St. Joe there may be a good dusting to 1".  And south of I-70 maybe a dusting, but if the snow pushes farther south a half inch isn't out of the question.  And once again some spots will end up with just some snow showers or flurries and a trace.  This will be a very light and fluffy snow since it will most likely be in the teens when the snow occurs.  These snow estimates are for this evening thru Sunday.  I'll keep updating things as more data becomes available.

*************************************

The weekend is here!  I hope everyone that has been wishing for snow enjoyed the quick shot of snow Friday evening.  Snow totals were as expected in the trace to half inch range.  KCI officially measued 0.1", but I'm guessing with the wind blowing the snow around it was tough for anyone to get a really accurate measurement.

The big weather story today will be the cold.  Arctic air spilled into the region yesterday and we will be in its grip today.  Morning lows dropped into the single digits this morning, including +4 at KCI.  With sunshine I think we recover into the teens this afternoon, probably 17-19 in the metro.  Below is the forecast temperature map from the RUC.  Notice that some areas in the upper Midwest will once again not even reach 0!

The cold air is going to stay locked in place for a few days.  Sunday highs should be around 20, and then into the 20s on Monday.  But keep in mind our average high is now heading back up and approaching 40!

At the start of Saturday, our average monthly temperature was just over two degrees above average.  Back in early January I predicted that we would end this month between average and -1.0 for the departure from average.  With the colder weather anticipated over the next 5 days or so, I am confident this forecast will hold or be very close.

Now how about snow chances.  We have several in the next 7-10 days.  Our next chance will come tonight into Sunday.  The best chance for snow will be near and north of I-70.  I think 1" of snow is possible near the Missouri/Iowa border.  Totals around 1/2" near highway 36, and maybe another dusting in Kansas City.  A little shift could change things slightly either way.  Below is the GFS precipitation forecast for tonight into Sunday.  The light green shade represents areas that should see some snow.

With a general trough in the West early next week several disturbances will move east on our upper level flow.  Each little wave could bring the area chances of snow.  I think at least one of these could bring the area more than just a dusting or 1/2".  But I want to see a little more data to see the trends before getting too excited, but at this point we are pretty confident there will be more snow chances early this week, and probably another Thursday or early Friday.

Thank you for stopping by the #1 source for weather information in Kansas City!  I will add more thoughts later today on our upcoming snow chances.  As of today KCI has picked up 7.7" of snow this season, so we have some catching up to do.

What time do you think the snow might start falling around Lincoln/Nebraska City tonight?  (This is the last time I'll ask this : )  Thanks!

Probably late evening.  There might be some travel problems in that direction.

Will this be an all snow event over the next few days, or will we see any freezing rain or sleet?

I wouldn't say no chance, but right now it looks like snow.

Brrr... good morning all.  It's so cold even the doggies don't want to go out this morning.

Looking outside, it seems there's more snow on the roads and driveway than in the grass.  I'm sitting here looking out the window at my bird feeders hanging from the tree outfront, and the oddest thing is there are 3 robins out there right now scrounging round in the dirt and bushes looking for food.

Anyone else still seeing robins? ?

How many "dustings" have we had this year? Seems like alot. Last night and now sun. and mon. look like dustings also. These dustings just add to the frustrating winter for snow lovers. This winter has been so pathetic I am ready to sell , just give me 1 inch instead of all dustings and I will call it good.

Hang in there, more snow chances this week.

Just a quick reminder folks! It's cold outside--don't leave your pets outside with it. If they have to stay outside make sure they have a warm place to go and plenty of water!

Fairskys, I have seen robins all winter.  They are not always out but there will be days I will see ten or more in my yard.  Most of my feeders are empty right now.  I think some pesky little guys got into them last night.  I will have to go out and fill them.  If I see a lot of birds, I know big snows are coming.

While watching a TV program on the "other station" last evening, they had a tease for the weather last night on how cold it was going to get and the had a forecast high for today of 47 degrees!!!! EVERYWHERE I read or seen, today was barely going to make it to 20 degrees or a few above that.  My question is this, why the HUGE contrast in temperatures between stations and other media outlets?

My mom said last night, "I did not think it was supposed to snow"...I replied, "Gary said something in his forecast about it and on his blog." I asked her where she checked her weather and she said the Weather.com...I guess they have yet to jump on board with the LRC.  :-)

Need to run out and do some errands.  Enjoy the weekend everyone!!!!

We can only control our forecast and hope that as many people see it as possible.  Most large websites that produce mass forecasts have 1 computer model that spits out the data on a grid system...in other words where you point and click you will get a forecast generated by a computer.

LBF1958:  Thanks for reminding people to bring their pets inside.  Fortunately most of the people here on the Blog (at least those who post) are good to their pets and remember to take care of them.  Unfortunately there are so many out there who have no clue and are poor pet owners.  I always want to remind people to first take care of your own and then check on your neighbor's pets.  No dogs or cats should be out in this kind of weather waaaay too cold I don't care how much straw you lay on the ground, it's too cold!  There is not a more heart breaking sight than seeing a dog, on a chain, next to an empty dog house moved way out from the house in the direct line of the wind, why did they even get a dog?????????  Ok, enough of being on my soap box.  It is weather related though.

Wow, what a cold day today has been!  our low between hours at Rosecrans was 2!  Well it has been sunny but the high clouds are starting to stream in now as the  next "disturbance" heads our way. The snow last night kind of hopped St. Joe, we did get a period where it came down pretty good, but we got just a VERY light dusting which seemed to be gone by later last night! On the visible sat. you can see that just north of St. Joe it accumulated more and you could see a fainter area of white near K.C.  Well at least we now have several chances of at least some snow;)

DPannell & LBF1958  I definately agree.  Thanks for mentioning it.

Perhaps our weather team, or better yet, Stormy the weather dog can issue  a 'Cold Canine' Watch or Warning on TV to remind everyone to bring their pets in during this bitter weather.

Looks like we miss the snow tonight and Sunday to the north, and then miss the brunt of the precip to the south early next week.    I hope we dont get the squeeze play and only get a few dustings out of this week.... we are way overdue!

Do the road crews  know something we don't about tonight's snow? Everywhere I've gone today I've seen MODOT, Kansas City and Lee's Summit road crews laying down salt.

There's really a chance of snow in the forecast everyday thru Tuesday.  Each could bring a little accumulation to the city.

It is hard to remain positive when a nice snowstorm goes north tonight and Sunday and NE getting 3-5" of snow and then Monday - Thursday Springfield to St Louis will get a major storm.   The Winter storm watches are just now going out in Northern OK

Lets hope it shifts and we get in a nice snow band and leave the ice down south

I had to go to a funeral earlier today.  We went to the service but skipped the gravesite service due to the cold.  Both my mom and I couldn't stand out in the cold.  My mom and I waited for everyone to come back for the dinner afterwards.  My three brothers went to the gravesite service and said it was quick.

If it is going to be this cold, it might as well snow.  But I am really wanting it to be spring. :)

Hey all,

Checking in from MU. Me and a few other Met. majors are thinking that the storm for Monday and Tuesday is coming together quite nicely. The 18z data reinforces this. The I-44 corridor may be dealing with a major ice storm, again. While up towards Columbia may be dealing with several inches of snow.

Great to hear from you!  There will be temperature spikes in the next few weeks, but overall the cooler temps will probably prevail.

the radar isnt looking very good.... is the snow going to develop or are we not going to get any now?

********************

The snow chance for the metro isn't until after midnight...and probably not until 3am or after.  Some will not get any snow, that's why when I showed the snowfall map some locations have 0.0" next to them.  We'll have to see where the band of light snow sets up, but areas to the north stand the best chance of snow accumulation.

I know this is a little out of the viewing area, but has anyone else been looking at the model data and AFD's from KINX and KSGF for the Monday night through Tuesday time frame??  Potential exists for quite the icing event across the southern part of MO, basically KINX to the MO Bootheel.  I am not sold on the forecasted QPF for the area (more of me hoping it is wrong more than anything).  Column profiles look sufficient though with H7 temps near 0C along and just south of the MO/AR border with H85 temps in the same area of -5 to -10C.  KINX has hoisted WSW for NE OK for the period!  Sure hope this does not come to fruition for anyone, but preparedness should be on-going if you or friends/family live in that area!

*******************

Something to keep an eye on as the models do advertise a very wet looking storm in those areas.  Since this is still about 48 hours away there is a lot to be determined.  We have seen in Kansas City just how big of a difference 1-3 degrees either way can make when ice is in the forecast, not to mention the storm tract is far from set in stone.
