Some signs of developing light snow

Good late afternoon bloggers,

We are finally seeing some signs of light snow developing and some freezing drizzle farther south.  If you read my blog entry from this morning then nothing really has changed.  This is why I haven't provided an update until now.  This storm is still very disorganized and our forecast of 1 to 2 inches is still possible, but expect the lower number.  Some spots may end up with less than an inch.

I will be tracking these developments on NBC Action News at 5, 6, and 10 PM tonight, and I will update the blog this evening after we look at the new data.  In the mean time you can check out www.LRCWeather.com and click on the weather blog there for a comparison of the past two years of precipitation.

Have a great evening.  Keep us updated on what you are experiencing. The ice storm to our south is causing travel problems already.  Let us know what you are hearing.

Gary

Gary, do you think the south KC area will get less than the north area?  Or is it really just going to be hit and miss for the entire area?

And when are you expecting the snow to start here?  Just hoping the evening rush is problem free!!

I recieved 20-21 inches in one storm December of 2006 (I think). It was awesome....a bob cat had to dig me out of my driveway for me to go to work 2 days later. We had to make a path for the god to do her business, :o). Ahhh what memories....I am hanging on to them, LOL!! I am not Metro KC but only about an hour south of you all.

Just drove from Raymore to Pittsburg, KS for some business meetings tomorrow.   Highway 71 from Belton to Lamar, MO wasn't too bad and I made good time, the precip didn't start until Nevada.  That being said, Highway 160 west from Lamar to Pittsburg was horrible and I was behind the salt truck!  3 wrecks in that 30 mile stretch of road and it took me over an hour.  From what I've heard, it's far worse further south towards Joplin.  I wouldn't do any travelling down south unless absolutely necessary and even then, I'd think about it some more.  I do hope it snows overnight because the roads are terribly greasy right now...

Gary---Against my worst intuition, I drove to OKC on business this morning..freezing drizzle started just south of the KS/OK line around 10AM and got worse as the day wore on..my car had 1.5 inches of ice on the wipers by the time I checked into my hotel (after kissing the ground when I arrived)...roads were treated early (thank God!!) ,but max speed on I-35 was 40MPH. Everything around here is cancelled EXCEPT the Bedlam Game in Stillwater....the radio said that admission tonight is FREE...guess they want to make a good show for TV.....just got logged into the my laptop and radar is showing precip moving NE with a small band moving through OKC now...nothing downstream looks to target OKC, so hoping for a better Tuesday....

I agree with "sweetness" everything in the town seems disorganized and guaranteed disappointment. It looks like this storm is going to cause my business to miss out on about $900 tomorrow. My wallet is sobbing and my pockets weaping! If we don't get 3" than it better snow dollar bills instead of flakes!!

Well I don't normally comment, but the weather is getting on my nerves. If it is going to snow I want snow that amounts to more than an inch. I am going to jump on the bandwagon of lets get this over with and move onto spring and summer. We always hope that the next winter will be better for us snow lovers, but I think this is as good as it is going to get. I hope that everyone south of us in the ice is ok and safe. I would never wish an ice storm on anyone.

I do have a question though, is this the active part of the "LRC"?

I reside in the Northland but I'm down in Joplin on a business trip.  It is like a ice skating rink down here.  I was on 32nd street by Freeman hospital and there was a handful of cars that couldn't get up the street.  I also seen about three cars that had slid and damaged the front end of their car on curbs.  It is pretty nasty down here.

Tinpusher - it's that seasonal affective disorder or something like that - it's been proven that it's mostly a winter disease, because it's brought on by lack of whatever you get from the sunshine, like in the summer.  They even make lights for it for people who have it bad - you sit under it for an hour a day!

Hi everyone. I read this blog often but have never posted. I just moved back to the Midwest (used to live in Des Moines) after being in Phoenix for the past 12 years. Boy did I miss winters!  Bummed that this is yet another storm missing KC but I am still hoping that Gary's winter forecast will hold true for around 20 inches this winter. I did want to give you a shout out Gary as I remember that during your winter forecast special you did say there would be one major ice storm to the south. Today looks like the day!

------------------

Yes, it is that day. Let's see how major it is. It is definitely causing problems already.  And, thank you so much for participating.

Yeah, and I think it is more prevelent in the Northern states.  I remember studying in college.  Of course, that was 15 years ago.

Good evening everybody!!

I'm just checking in-we have had a mix of freezing drizzle/snow flurries here in SW Lawrence for about the last hour or so-it is extremely lite but the side walks and my street does have a thin coat of ice-very thin and probably just in spots.

Good luck to those in southern Missouri!!!

Have a great evening

Bill,

Yeah, this is a tough one.  And, it isn't that surprising, but still very disappointing.  We may have one chance of snow during the morning on Tuesday and that could be it.

You have done a great job with the winter forcast as far as temp swings and "calm" part and  "active" part (if you really want to call it that),but your snow forcast is a total bust.Sorry if I sound angry, but I am vary dissapointed. My work gets slow in the winter and it sounded like this was going to be a good season for snow removal, and it has turned out to be the worst for me in 15 years.   :(

You guys seem surprised that yet ANOTHER storm has skirted the KC area!!  Come on people... this is the NORM for this area of the country.

I'm still convinced that our geographic location in reference to the Rocky Mountains and Gulf of Mexico has SOMETHING to do with why we miss all the good storms.  Whether it's winter snow storms or spring severe weather, the 50 mile radius that is centered in downtown KC always sees the nasty/big stuff go right around us.  It will be heading in with huge potential, only to dry up, move past us and then reorganize.  It's almost like it loses it's Rocky Mountain influence, pauses (as it goes over KC) and the regains it's strength from the Gulf flow in Central Missouri (I know it's much more complicated than that, but you get my drift).

This current storm is almost the icing on the cake for the KC area "missing out".  A huge snow and ice event south and southeast of here with wave #1 of the storm... while wave #2 is forecast to bring a very nice snow event 100 miles to our north.  It's happened so many times in our past... there HAS to be more than just coincidence to all of these misses.
