Heavy snow is developing

Good late afternoon bloggers,

Heavy snow is rapidly developing in a band from near Leavenworth through North Kansas City northeast to just north of Chillicothe and near Trenton. Snowfall rates are increasing to an inch per hour.  It is uncertain how this newly developed band will track as the main storm reorganizes as we had discussed earlier in the day.  The heavy snow is confined to a small area in the center of this band.

We will have complete details on NBC Action News at 5, 6, and 10 PM and we will update the blog this evening.  Let us know what you are experiencing as we already have new reports of heavy snow in the KC metro area.

Are you expecting this band to increase and expand and sit in the same area for awhile?  It seems like that is what has happened in Central/Southern Missouri today

Moderate to heavy snow in Joplin.  We are seeing at least an inch per hour.  We have had 1/4-1/2" of freezing rain, 1/4-1/2" of sleet and now several inches of snow falling.  SORRY GARY AND JEFF

This is weird, having the snow re-develop like this. Must be a little jet streak or something touching it off.

Is this a "quick mover" or is it going to sit over us for a couple hours?
Any chance it could be out of here in less than an hour? : )
I fear this is not going to be a fun rush hour!
It's almost freaky just watching the animated weather map, where it starts out as almost nothing and just explodes right on top of us.

I just hope it maintains its course, it's accumulating fairly quickly up here in Leavenworth.  Would be nice if it stuck around for at least a few hours to get a few inches out of it.

Snow falling in Lawrence this hour - I wouldn't classify it as heavy though - if anything, it's fairly light.

It's funny we have a nice steady snow in leavenworth but it's sticking to surfaces rather than the grass I thought that was wierd.

were looking at about 3/4 of an inch of snow here in southern leawood... looks really dry... its been blowing around around on the driveway all day. Currently im sitting at 17 degrees... very very overcast with very light, small snow falling.

I'm waiting for that band to drop south! it looks like its intensifying to the west, but getting smaller and moving faster...

Ahh, critics.  I was away for a bit, and missed some fun in the prior blog entry.  I agree with some of the points, while humored with some of the others.

Rdub- sorta agree.  Notes-your thoughts interesting as ever.  Country - canned response.  I got what I deserved - qualitative critique/opinion for qualitative assertion.  Folks forget how much of a critic I was of this theory a few years ago...

Guess we will enjoy this snow and let the debate continue on.  I believe the LRC exists, but would agree with all - that forecasting with the LRC will require ongoing experience and improvement.  No different than any model analysis/forecasting.

Gary, the band of snow that is giving us snow in Leavenworth and coming in from the southwest looks like it could keep producing for a few hours at least.  It's coming down at a pretty good clip, and you don't have to squint to try to find the snowflakes!  Do you have an estimate on how much we will get.  Thanks.

Gary, I just picked up this useless piece of trivia but it sure makes me appreciate what you do day in and day out!!!

Here's a weird question - I've noticed over the past 8 years or so Springfield MO has had a LOT more 6"+ snows than Kansas City. Why is it that a city farther south (i.e. Springfield MO) is more likely to get heavy snow than Kansas City? I'm guessing it has something to do with the proximity to the Gulf of Mexico - but still - weird.

My 3 year old is loving wearing her snow boots in actual snow, LOL!! This keeps up for a bit longer I may be able to build a snowman. My snowman decor is safe for a bit longer, LOL!! I am enjoying this just in case I do not get anymore this winter. Have a great day.

So disappointed here in Belton, just barely a dusting......as of 4:45pm there's tiny and I do mean OH SO TINY flurries in the air.  Could be what's on the ground just blowing up and about, it's that small.

I know all the kids are hoping for a Snow Day tomorrow, so I have my fingers crossed for them.

Maybe a dusting every 10 years or so. Nothing measureable.
