Thunderstorms Forming...Tornado Watch

Good Evening bloggers,

A thunderstorm just formed over north Kansas City as we were on during our 6 PM newscast.  This is small compared to the ones out west.  A tornado watch has been issued until midnight for areas just west of Kansas City.  We will be monitoring this situation very closely.  Stay with NBC Action News, we'll keep you advised.

I think the MCS will materialize from what is near Dodge City right now. MASSIVE cluster of storms out there, and it looks to have some characteristics I have noted in past MCSs. Don't hold me to this, but I'm pretty sure.

Those two storms in the Wichita area both have tornado warnings on them now. They're really the only 2 storms out there. Wonder where else something will form? Oh, wait, 3 storms now with a radar update.

Right now, I still see what has formed in Kansas City. It also looks like something is forming up to the north of Topeka in Marshall and Nemaha Counties. Also, as I look out my window south of Odessa, I see a cumulonimbus cloud that is growing pretty fast.

looks like an odd night ahead ;)

It certainly doesnt appear that this cell which has formed over NKC is moving very quickly to the east, if it downpours we'll easily see some flooding.

Seems pretty obvious that we are going to get a watch for the metro in the next hour or two. What do you think the chances are that instead of a tornado watch we could just get a severe thunderstorm watch?

The storm over Gladstone (just south of me) is really struggling to get its act together.  We've had thunder in the Liberty/Shoal Creek area for almost an hour, but no rain yet.  Watching radar, I've had a hard time figuring out what direction the cell is moving.  Is it possible for a cell to break through the cap in one place and then get "trapped" by the rest of the cap?  That may be a stupid question; I'm fairly ignorant about weather, but my nephew's a NWS meteorologist.

I think it would be on the border between the two. The tornado threat will decrease without the risk of supercells, but tornadoes are often found on an MCS too. Biggest risks by far are still large hail, damaging winds, and especially flooding rain.

Thanks Amos. I was trying to decide whether or not to put my kids to bed in their own beds upstairs or just call it a basement sleeping night. I think to be on the safe side we might as well sleep in the bed downstairs, even if nothing severe happens, the thunder won't be as loud and we can get better sleep (that's if they don't kick me all night long being in the same bed. :)

Just be came cloudy in Olathe, right as the sun sets, holding in heat. It was nice to watch the clouds building to the north, so this is the last chance for significant severe weather in the plains with this stomr system or will there be one more that cools the mini heat wave.

Pea to marble size hail and heavy rain and very impressive cloud to ground lightning.  This cell has not moved more than a few miles since it started forming two hours ago.

BoiseStateFootballFan,
I was having the same issue too. In the last blog I asked if anyone else was having the same issue. It is nice to know it was not just me. It seems to be working now by the way.

Cloudy getting darker here in eastern Independence. A few sprinkles and thats it. Looks as though the cap is in place here still. Saw some couds trying to rise but then they flatten out so to my untrained eye it looks as though the cap is still here. Plz let me know what the more expierenced think.

are those actually showers just to the south of Ottawa or is that a gust front showing up from the storms to the west?

Interesting (and omimous?) that the storm that just dropped an inch of rain and marble sized hail in the Liberty/Shoal Creek area still left the atmosphere juiced.  I just went outside and it's 75f and the air is thick with humidity.  Usually a strong cell like that pulls down some cooler air.  Not this time.  Stand by for an interesting evening.

The sheer size of the radar echo is extremely impressive.  One of the larger cells seems to be showing a bow echo across its entire leading edge.
