Dangerous Heat Wave

Watch NBC Action News HD at 5, 6, & 10 p.m. for the latest on the extreme heat!

Good Tuesday bloggers!  Excessive Heat Warnings are in place for the entire viewing area right now!  The heat index has climbed to 112 at KCI Airport as of 2 p.m.  This could go as high as 115 before today is over.  At least 2 deaths in the metro are being attributed to the extreme heat.

After the extreme heat the day got kind of weird...as a couple of tiny thunderstorms popped up over the metro.  One storm produced 60-70mph winds over Liberty, with some trees being blown down and minor roof damage to one building.  See the radar image below which was the Liberty cell before it turned severe.

In the meantime, below is the chart that we use to determine the heat index.

RELIEF!  At least a 5-10 minute cooldown fround a few spots today.  A couple of isolated showers and thunderstorms popped up.  This cell below turned severe with some damage reported in Liberty!

Another tiny cell was over Franklin County this evening.  Our weather blogger JB took this shot of a nice towering cumulus cloud in the distance.  JB was at Hillsdale Lake.  Likely cumulonimbus, but I can't see the base:)

If you have a great weather picture please send it our way!  We've gotten a lot of great photos in the past 2 days.  Like this one...

Please, in addition to asking people to check on the elderly or family/friends with no AC, also remind people NOT to leave their pets outside in this heat. Can you imagine being kept outside all day in a fur coat in this weather?

Let's all be responsible pet owners, in addition to good neighbors.

Wow! That storm north of Omaha is about 220 miles away, yet I can see it on the horizon from here in Lenexa. I'm not a sailor so I can't do the math to figure the height of the storm. Jeremy, a little radar help??

This afternoon at lunch time, I put a 1 1/2 inch thick t-bone into a skillet and set it on the sidewalk out in the sun.  After about 30 minutes, I pulled it out with a fork - medium well done with a slight pink in the center!  Had eggs over medium and fried bacon this morning.

All kidding aside, I hope everyone stays safe, and that we check upon each other and those we do not know to make sure they have enough water and air moving.

Some isolated storms are popping up southeast of here and also west of us. In a way, a heavy downpour would be great, for about 5 minutes and then it would be a sauna.

Well I can see the storm tops from Omaha here in McLout as well.  Not 200 miles but, you can see them, hopeful relief that will never get here.  But, we are on a break and it is 102 in my backyard with a heat index of 113.  Definitely a hot time today.  Definitely a black flag day.

Remember, shadow shorter than you are tall = get out of the sun.

Small chance of a shower tomorrow afternoon.  If you want rain, Wednesday Night or early Thursday is the best chance.

I was wondering why nobody commented on the last blog for about an hour now...

That would be great to see if we could get a heavy downpour that would take us down to about 85 degrees. yeah, with 100% humidity LOL.

Now, time to pace around the house, which thankfully is not as hot as outside. It's only 85 in here... with the A/C on!

I see that the dew points are dropping a bit (now 64 in Topeka), even with a south wind (and dew points to the south, like Emporia, are still at 70).  Is this just the ground and vegetation drying out, leading to less moisture in the air?
June 23, 2009 4:37 PM

Taxman -
somebody else could probably explain this better than me, but about 60 days ago, the jet stream pattern was pretty much the same way.

I made you a special graphic
http://tiny.cc/LRC_Comparison1

As you can see, there are dips of lower heights on the NE & NW coasts, and the heights are higher in the center of the U.S.

This holds true still 60 days later, it is just that the high pressure south of the jet stream is much stronger and the low pressure systems are weaker, which is simply because of the strength of the jet stream. Hopefully that is helpful.

Ask if you have any other questions. Surely someone here can help you more than I!

@davidmcg:  Looks like it may have been a glitch on the Topeka NWS page-the 3:53 readings were 99 degrees, 64 dew point, but the latest update at 4:53 has the dew point at 69.  Never thought I'd be pining for 'only' 64...

OK...that was bizarre!!
We had winds that blew off a portion of the roof of an apartment complex in our neighborhood.  We have power lines down with the poles snapped in half.  We have trees and/or large limbs down all around.  Our street is blocked by some of them.
A few blocks over a very large, old tree was completely blown over at the base and is on part of a house.

That was such a sudden strange storm!

Don't know when we'll get power back and with it being so hot the timing COULD have been better!!!!

We live in Wilshire by South Valley Middle School in Liberty.

Amos said:

That sucks Sammie! How hot is it up there now?

These storms can be quite bizarre; storms like that seem to go down faster than they go up!

It's simple actually how they happen. They build up simply due to the heat, and since they don't move much, and the rain they produce cool things off significantly compared to what it was before, they lose their up-drafts almost immediately, and all of the rain it was holding up comes crashing down. That makes some pretty strong winds!

It is interesting how they do those watches, like the one in northern Missouri, If you look at the "watch box" itself, Atchison county, and Holt county are not even touching the box but they are in the highlighted counties, yet a large portion of Buchanan county is IN the box, but not actually under the watch.  Not complaining or anything like that, but it is interesting to see how they do the watch on the fringes of the "box".  You can see the clouds of the storms in IA from here on the horizon, will at least see some lightning to my north and east tonight I think!

We were in the Liberty Olive Garden eating our salad and breadsticks when the power went out briefly, then came back on.  After another several minutes it went out again.  The wind was blowing extremely hard and rain was pelting the south facing windows.  Some thunder was heard, but it didn't seem to be very loud from our vantadge point.  We continued eating when it was announced that we were to quickly move into the kitchen area (center of building) due to severe weather.  The staff handled everything very professionally and did a great job at keeping everyone calm.  We stayed in the kitchen until the storm passed.
Getting back to our neighborhood took a bit of effort since there was no power on Hwy 152 into town.  There is large limb damage near the new CVS area and the Liberty High school campus.  We took Liberty Drive home, and just a block or two south of Liberty Christian Fellowship a large tree was uprooted and is laying against a house with various limbs of other trees strewn about.  I also live in the Wilshire area and am hearing the constant sound of helicopters flying overhead.  The apartment complex has some roof damage and large limbs and a couple of trees down.  Seems to be typical damage due to a downburst.  FORTUNATELY we have POWER!!!  Our neighborhood, with its established large trees, seems to take the hit easily with any moderate winds.  We were lucky this time.

What exactly did happen here in Liberty?  Did the storm just develop right overhead?  It was almost perfectly clear, until...

We were driving to my daughter's dance class on 291 and it was lightly sprinkling.  Shortly after we got there, there was a bright flash and a loud boom. It started raining lightly, then heavier.  In the midst of it there was loud thunder, bright lightning, hail, heavy heavy rain, and lots of wind.  The electricity went out and was still out when we left.  Traffic lights were out all up 291, until we got the traffic light at Stark.  Then we get to our neighborhood, North Hampton, and not a single drop had fallen.

I pray father, all might ruler of heaven, Earth, and the Universe, please don't let this become in essance, reality;

. . . . .IT IS POSSIBLE THAT VERY WARM AND
HUMID CONDITIONS WILL PERSIST INTO FRIDAY AND EVEN SATURDAY. THIS MAY NECESSITATE A CONTINUATION OF THE EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING INTO THE WEEKEND.

Today we reached a high of 102 degrees in the sun and 100 in shade (wich I learned is where actual air temperature is taken) in South Johnson County. There were many power surges at my house and on facebook many of my friends said the power was going out. We must through ice-cubes outside every day to stop the heat wave. BTW, Johnson County is not "Snotty," Tina, if we knew mroe about the rest of the world I do think we could improove a little though. Why would you think that, you LIVE here don't you?

Interesting weather day...I am working on a little project to show what happened...long story short, a very small..and subtle gravity wave stalled over KC around 3-4PM...these cells are firing on it...

I am going to try to produce a bit of a hi-res loop specific to the metro to show it...we will see if I can get this to work right as getting the exact resolution, format, and timeframe from NOAA can be a bit challenging.

Here is a very cool look from radar of the Liberty cell outflow of the collapsing cell...
