Cold Front Moving Through...Heavy T-Storms

6:45 PM update:

Very heavy thunderstorms continue to dump rain at the rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour over southern Overland Park crossing the state line into southwestern Jackson and northern Cass counties.  There is a chance of a microburst wind in excess of 60 mph but since the cold front has pushed south of the front this risk will shift farther south as the cells move away.  Jeff Penner will be showing an interesting time-lapse of this thunderstorm which did have some lowerings. Watch NBC Action News at 10 PM in HD tonight for more details!  Here is a picture of the cell as it broke away from the cold front drifting over Lee's Summit. This is looking north over Overland Park, KS, and you can see one of the lowerings at 7:15 PM:

Good evening bloggers,

A cold front is moving through the KC metro area at 5 PM. It has already passed through KCI Airport with north winds at 14 mph and this front is steadily pushing southeast at around 25 mph, so the entire metro area will have the north wind shift by 7 PM.  There are some pre-frontal and post-frontal thunderstorms developing this evening.  There is a slight risk for some severe thunderstorms this evening with the main threat being some microburst winds.  The thunderstorms forming ahead of the front have the best chance of being severe. The post frontal thunderstorms will most likely produce some lightning and a few heavy downpours, but the threat of a microburst is much less in these post frontal thunderstorms.

Once again, thunderstorms forming along and ahead of the front have the potential for a microburt wind of over 60 mph.  The front is moving steadily south and this threat will shift into southern parts of the viewing area during the evening hours. There is a weak upper level disturbance approaching from the west and this will keep a threat of showers and thunderstorms behind the front for a few hours as well.

We will try to get the comments back on soon.  You can email our weather account: Weather@NBCActionNews.com and let us know if you experience any severe weather or just leave a comment here as I think I did get it fixed.  A severe thunderstorm warning was just issued for Johnson and Miami counties for the cell that has formed right on the front just south of Olathe.

There's a blotch of red and yellow popup storm just to the west of us in south Johnson County. That's enough to make me come inside from watering the garden. Lots of thunder, should be a shortlived event I think.

Bizzaro Jerry-
These storms like the ones we've had have this week mainly been formed by heat and not the classic major convergence. These storms are able to form on any little boundary, including outflow and summer cold fronts like today. Since these boundaries are relatively weak, they need massive amounts of heat to keep them going. As you may know though, rain cools the ground down, and inhibits updrafts. This means that basically the sky falls out above you, and all of the precipitation and cool air comes down and spreads out across the ground with some wild winds.

Today is not identical to the previous days, as this cold front has a little more convergence, and is more constant than that of an outflow which can easily wash out. Today's storms also are moving faster than the others, but the rain cooled air can still rush out in front of the storm and cool things off, and the storms can easily collapse still and there could still be microburst wind events, especially due to the coverage of the storms

I personally prefer an antenna since it is free and I don't have to worry about the TV going out. Since none of our 'real' digital channels in this area are on the VHF and are on the UHF band, we do not have to worry about those channels breaking up. Brings up a topic about how lightning effects the DTV transition in some areas, but not in Kansas City.

We decided not to post this letter.  So, I am deleting it now. We don't want to even discuss it.  Everyone should know the rules....no personal attacks on anyone, no bad language, and we will keep the topics to weather or whatever is discussed in an open forum that is brought up through the blog.  We had to shut down the comments because people were not following the rules, it was affecting more than just the one or two posters causing the problem. Well..guess that was a fun finale.  NW winds start.  It should dry up some.  Finally, some more temperate air masses.  Alas, we end our 6 days or so of "Heat Warnings"

Whatever.  I guess two out of six days was accurate enough for the NWS.

Time to look ahead to some better and calmer weather.  Not looking forward to the last week of July...as we transition back out of the NW toward the split flow, we should find a similar ridge in the central plains again...but this time, we won't have the obscene humidity as we did this time, but with that...it could shoot the high temps much higher.  Could see some 100 degree days then.

David, Earthrite absolutely does not break up clay soil and turn it into topsoil. Clay is one of three soil components, the others being sand and silt. You might see a temporary improvement due to more humic acid being produced in the soil, but it's a temporary improvement. There is only one thing in the world that breaks up clay and improves the soil the way we all want it: organic material. Add loads of it -- leaves, grass clippings, composted manure...I won't go into the science of how organic materials and soil organisms break up clay, just trust me. It's the only way. Soil science was my favorite course in college.

The Empress Tree is very undesirable for several reasons:  It's invasive, it is barely hardy in this area, so if we get a really bad winter, it will be toast. It can't tolerate being overwatered, which it probably was this spring, and worst of all, it needs acidic soil, pH 5.6 - 6.0  No soil in Kansas has that low a pH unless the gardener has worked very hard to get it that way. That's blueberry-growing soil. Google "paulownia tomentosa" to read more about it. I know what that website says, and I never believe it. If you want a naturally fast grower, plant a willow, and put it in a wet spot.

Fast growing trees are weak trees, period. I know, I have two small mimosas, too. They're short lived, invasive and I wanted a couple of them anyway. Just know what you're getting into. The slower the grower, the stronger the wood. Google "trees for Kansas" and read any link from the www.oznet site -- that's the K-State extension service. Great articles on the best things to plant here.

Sorry, I'll stop talking horticulture now. Nice weather, eh? Scott, I'm ignoring your prophecy of doom for the end of the month. Our lawn is fried enough as it is.

ChicagoExPat said:

It can easily get colder than -10 here. I wouldn't plant anything that isn't hardy to -20. And the Metro area is in Zone 5b. I plant for Zone 5a to be safe. Just be aware that any fast growing tree won't be as wind resistant as a slow growing one.

Please -- no more massive heat waves!  Last week was like the summer of 1995 in Chicago -- hell on earth.

We only got 3/4" rainfall yesterday. The garden already needs water, and the low areas in our lawn that got the wettest in spring have succumbed to fungal diseases. No wonder so many people don't bother with gardens in Kansas. It's a real acid test for sure.
