July 8, 2009....Update

12:10 PM Update:  A small complex of showers and thunderstorms is drifting south down the state line.  We will be tracking this activity this afternoon.

Good Wednesday morning bloggers,

The forecast is rather complex as we are going to be near the edge of a heat wave developing to our southwest.  Already this morning we had a complex of thunderstorms move south from Iowa in north flow aloft around the developing anticyclone (upper level high height area).  Outflow from this complex switched our winds to the north early today and this will likely lead to our 11th day in a row below 90 degrees.  And, thunderstorms may form again near this outflow boundary this afternoon as we could have another interesting day of cumulus development.  A smaller verison of outflow happened yesterday afternoon.  Take a look at the thunderstorm that developed over Oceans of Fun yesterday afternoon:

Amazingly, most of the viewing area had sunshine with a few cumulus clouds on Tuesday, but not a small area along the Missouri River where there was a weak disturbance moving across and it triggered two or three thunderstorms over this isolated part of the metro area.  Look at the rain shaft and outflow that cooled the late afternoon off. This wasn't quite the microburst that we had two weeks ago, but it is a small version of it.  I am sure the winds in this downdraft were more like around 25 mph which wouldn't have caused any damage:

The above two pictures are from our American Century Investments Skyview.  Our Briarcliff North Village Skyview captured these next two pictures offering a different perspective looking to the south.  Look at the very heavy rain falling to the ground in the form of this rain shaft, unfortunately heading right towards Oceans and Worlds of Fun Tuesday:

This mornings thunderstorm complex may have fallen apart with the outflow boundary getting through us, but it is a great example of what will likely happen around the periphery of the upper level ridge or anticyclone during the next few days.  The heat will build quite strongly underneath this clockwise circulation to our south and depending on each days thunderstorm complexes, and the position of any front or outflow bounday, the heat that affects us is still tough to forecast.  One hour I think we will surge to 98 on Thursday and then the next model run I think it will only by 92.  It's only a 6 degree difference, but I think it is the difference from it really sizzling and us not quite getting into the heat.  So which will it be?  Here is the 500 mb flow forecast for Friday:

We will be following these developments on the new data today.  Our weather team has been working hard to create some very special graphics and time-lapses of the weather that we are experiencing and about to experience.  Look for some more special graphics today and tonign in HD on NBC Action News.  Have a great day!

Must be some fairly cold air aloft for the SPC to be worried so much about large hail....

That was quite a downpour that we experienced over the downtown area yesterday late afternoon. I think a lot of people were caught unexpectedly without umbrellas! Of course that is because they weren't following your forecast. ;)

Is that rain up around St. Joe going to make it down to the city?
My garden would like a drink, but I'd sure like the grass to dry out another day so I can mow it down and cut back some of the jungle, lol.

I hope we get some more outflow boundaries from those northern storms this afternoon. I was surprised the boundary made it to me in La Cygne this morning. Made the morning so refreshing that the horses were kicking up their heels.

There is a scout daycamp a little south of Lees Summit today.  Is there any lightning in that complex that they should be concerned about?  The radar loop looks like it will go south of the area.  Is there a chance that the bow echo turns the storm more to the east?

Wow it really looks as though those storms are really moving. They appear to be heading right to us with the stronger part of the showers on the Kansas side. I would guess that they are moving at 30 to 40 mph. Can someone with more knowledge tell us how you can tell how fast a storm is moving? I know you can sit there and do the math from when it hits one point to the next but is there a map or something that tells us how fast? Thanks

Well the edge of that anti-cyclone just dumped on us.  I emailed ya some pics of the approaching gust front.  Top wind speed was 21.9mph, some very small hail that lasted all of about 15 seconds.  A barn just west of lake Perry was hit by lightening.  Rain total when it stops.

Looks like a cloudy cooler afternoon and some rain too...wondering how this fits into this weeks weather pattern. Would seem to verify your take on a bit cooler and possibly wetter scenario than earlier in the week...when we were looking at possible upper 90's and dry. I'll sure take this...especially with some rain anyday.

NW Lawrence picked up 0.39" in our little thunderstorm that ended 30 minutes ago.

From my perspective, travelling west on I-70 from downtown to NW Lawrence, the thunderstorm continued to re-develop to the west. I stopped at Cabela's and the storm was directly north.  As I approached the turnpike toll booth, more development was beginning to form to the west.  There was frequent cloud-to-ground lightning; quite an imperssive show.

Picked up .003" a few minutes ago 2 miles South of Reno. Lawrence got a lot more. Vivid lightning. Am I dreaming, or is lighting more radical in storms that form when it's hot?

Wahhhhh, Lawrence and Ottawa got our rain. We got some thunder, just enough to freak out the dog, but we are just getting spit on. Looks like I'll spend tomorrow morning watering the garden.

A very much appreciated .3" of rain here in my corner of the world.  Temp has dropped to 75, although the sun is now out in all its glory so I suspect we will be warming back up shortly.

This is really getting old!! Here comes a line of storms/rain headed right for us here in Independence and it gets rights to the edge of us and poof there it went!!

Mother Nature the south bound bridge on 291 is ok to cross...LOL>> oh well guess I have to turn on the sprinkler system in the morning.

----------

There are two or three chances of rain between now and Sunday. If you miss out on those chances, the sprinklers may be needed as tripple digit heat is possible by the end of the week.
