Two storms of very different intensities

Watch NBC Action News in HD as we  Debut Our New Weather Look Tonight!  We have been working on our new graphics and they will debut on our Midday Newscast at 11 AM this morning.

Good morning everyone,

We are tracking two storm systems this morning.  The first one already affected us as it passed by on  Sunday with the band of rain and thunderstorms.  It dropped into Texas, reorganized and the upper system has become negatively tilted and it is being ejected out as a much stronger storm dives into the western states.  You can see the two storm systems on the this map:

There is an area of light rain showers moving into southern Linn County this morning and the showers are drifting north.  There is a chance that these showers could make it close to Kansas City later this morning, but areas to the north and west will not be affected much  at all today by this system.  The second storm is much stronger as you can see on this next map:

Quite often we will talk about a major storm system for days, and then when it moves through we only experience a quick band of showers when the system tracks to your north.  This system will eject northwest of Kansas City, with a trailing southern split off of the main storm which will fall into almost the same spot as today's storm system.  As the northern part of this storm moves out we will likely get that one band of showers/thunderstorms. So, we have two more days to talk about this storm, but the impact will likely be small.

After this next storm goes by, the jet stream is forecast to lift significantly northward.  But for how long?  The LRC is still becoming established with the first cycle still in progress.  There is going to be much more to it than just what we have experienced the past few weeks.  So, as the jet stream shifts north it should be a reality check for anyone who has jumped to any conclusions on what this weather pattern means for winter.  We are still analyzing the new LRC and our winter forecast will come out November 16th when I do a special segment on NBC Action News.  Here is the retreating jet stream as shown on the 500 mb GFS forecast valid at noon on Sunday.  I would have usually said 1 PM, but the time changes this weekend, which means the data will come out an hour earlier.

Have a great day.  We have brand new weather graphics debuting tonight on NBC Action News in HD. Let us know what your first impression is later on today.

Good Morning Everyone,
Not actually a "weather" question, Gary, but can you or Brett (or anyone) tell me if that was the space station I saw this morning? I was looking east into the pre- sunrise sky (around 6:45 a.m.) and saw a small but bright dot just north of Venus moving eastward on a smooth, arcing trajectory . It did not blink like an airplane. What do you think? Space station? I don't believe that there are any shuttles up there now, are there?
Congrats on the new graphics - I am looking forward to seeing them tonight! Have a great day everyone, RickyTim in Ottawa

Ricky,

Not certain what you saw but I was told a couple of years ago that with the solar panels on the space station it will be the brightest morning star in the sky.

You can find the space station's transit times, along with the time of various other satellites by going to www.spaceweather.com/flybys.  Doing so, you find for this morning:

ISS 06:41:35 am NNW 06:43:47am 34° -2.5 (very bright)

Wow, this is a big change from how things looked last week..."This will bring us our strongest cold front of the season so far and it will be cold enough to snow by the time the storm is exiting the region"...long-term forecasts are tricky this time of year...

--------------

Not really a big change. It is still, perhaps, our strongest front, but the upper system is sliding by and ejecting out, mainly to our north, thus no chance of a snowflake.  But, remember Rdub, this is still two days away.  And, once we know the LRC and this year's characteristics we will be able to make better medium to long range predictions.

Gary,

Again last night, your graphics showed two different values for today and I'm curious which one is the one you use for the high.

On last night's 10pm broadcast, on the slide for the upcoming afternoon, you had a temperature of 56...then on the 7-day, it showed a high of 55 for today.

Last week when the temperatures were different, you indicated that the afternoon slide was not intended to show the "HIGH" for the day, just the afternoon temp...and that the actual HIGH temperature forecast is the value represented on the 7-day.  That made sense when you went for something like the upper-50s for the afternoon slide, but a technical high of 62 (since it'd be 62 at 12:01am that morning).

But when you show an afternoon temp of 56, but a high on the 7-day of 55, the same logic doesn't apply (as the high can't be lower than a temperature forecast for the upcoming afternoon).  I'm hoping you can clarify a bit.

Thanks.

-----------------

Last night we changed the high just before our weathercast to 55 because we thought the clouds would really move in around noon. We just forgot to change the daily high.  Our mistake.  So, we are going with what is on the 7 day.

Strongest front of the year? With highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s? Doesn't seem that dramatic.

So the high on the 7-day is the one that is used for your guarantee?

It seems there have been a few times where multiple highs are shown on various graphics and then the one that validates closest is used for the guarantee.  But if you now stick to the the 7-day is the verification point, then that clarifies the confusion.

Do you have any thoughts on how long your cycle is this year?  I know you keep saying the wheel is spinning and we need to wait and there are a million teasers that have been tossed out over the last couple of months, but I'm curious what your initial thoughts are on a LENGTH of your cycle, if you have started considering a certain number yet.  It might be interesting to toss out some numbers and see what the bloggers think.

Further, it might be interesting when you ARE ready to reveal your number, if you were to put out three numbers (like 35 days, 52 days, and 67 days) and give the bloggers, say, 48 hours, to play around with it and check it out on their own and then vote on which length they think is the actual value for your cycle before you reveal your number...just might be interesting to show if a consensus can arrive at a value prior to your input.

Well.....ummmmm.....JMHO...the new graphics are very slick, but I think there is way too much orange. It was a bit hard on the eyes. There were so many warm colors in the 7-day forecast graphic that I found it harder to read.  (You wanted feedback, didn't you?)

Well, I couldn't see the new graphics, but I'm sure the look good. It will be interesting to see orange on them. Personally, I thought the now "old" weather gfx's were fine and didn't need to be changed for a while...And doesn't a change of weather graphics mean a change of all the other ones for the newscast?

Alden,

Yes, all of the graphics have changed.  It has taken a lot of work. I love it. I think the 7 Day is showcased really well.

Based on the new weather open, the graphics would stick out like a sore thumb compared to the blues that were used for the main graphics.  I would hope that it comes with new opens for news, new graphics and hopefully new music...the old stuff is baaaaaaaad.

when I say bad....i meant the music.  The graphics were okay...I guess not flashy enough for me in HD as compared to SD.

The music bothers you?  Wow, it's interesting to see what people like and don't like about the presentation. I'm used to the music and kind of indifferent to it. I really like orange, but mostly as highlights, not a whole screen full of it. But let's face it, what we really care about is an accurate forecast...

Now the non winter lovers think the winter trend is this moderation Gary is talking about! Forecasting for what you see right this second and nothing boefore or after isn't good, but maybe it will be a nice winter for everybody! Warm and dry and cold and snowy, that would make everybody happy. I wouldn't mind both, just not only warm and dry.

I really like the new graphics.  I think they are really pretty!  Very fall looking I think.  Change is always nice.  Now, if I could just see the cold and some snowflakes on that 7 day I will be soooooooo super excited!  I am hoping and wishing we don't have to wait too long, even some flurries soon will be exciting!

It's quite obvious we're going to have a moderate winter. It's the "freaky factor". We had a freaky summer which was abnormal, so we will also have a freaky winter which is abnormally warm. Everyone will be saying "This doesn't really seem like winter"  It's the WFC (WilliamR Freak Cycle)
