A Major Storm Is About To Form...11-12-2009

Watch Monday Night at 10 PM For Our Winter Forecast in HD!  We will also be putting some more information online soon!

Good morning NBC Action Weather Bloggers,

While the remnants of Hurricane Ida blast the mid-Atlantic states today with 10 inches of rain, or possibly more, near the Virginia coastline we have what could be a wet storm heading our way.  There is even a chance that we could see our first snowflakes on the backside of this storm that hasn't even formed yet.  The energy that will begin developing and organizing into a storm is still well offshore in the Pacific Ocean.  You can see it below on this first forecast map valid at 6 PM this evening:

The eastern United States storm, now a cut-off low, will be centered just off the Virginia coast at 6 PM tonight.  This is the storm that will produce the excessive rain and winds near the coast of over 55 mph.  It is cut-off from the main jet stream and is moving very slowly.

Take a look, below, at the next storm forming by Saturday night near the Utah/Arizona border:

There is a lot to pay close attention to in the next two weeks as the weather pattern is about to get a jolt of energy.  Split flow is going to become more enhanced near the west coast and the southern branch is often under forecast during the earliest stages of any developing split flow.  Our weather is about to become much more exciting than it has been so far this month.  You can see the split flow forming off the Pacific northwest coast.  There is a very high probability that this next storm is just the beginning of an energetic and stormy second half of November.  Earlier this week I showed how we have had our first snowflakes before Thanksgiving the last five years in a row.  The last time we didn't have our first snowflakes before Thanksgiving was 2001.  As this pattern becomes energized I am expecting this year to make it 8 years in a row with those first snowflakes before the Plaza Lights go on!  Will we have our first inch to end the snowflake contest?  The deadline to enter the snowflake contest is Friday.  Go to www.NBCActionNews.com/snowflake to enter.

There are many uncertainties concerning this next potentially very wet storm heading our way.  The rainfall and snowfall forecasts will be trending one way or another in the next few days, but here is what the 06z (midnight) run of the GFS showed:

This rainfall forecast will move around west and east, a bit north or south, in the coming days.  But, it looks like a certainty that this is going to be a very wet storm for November.  For us to see our first snowflakes here in Kansas City we will need the upper low to track near or south of Kansas City.  This still may happen by Monday night or Tuesday and we will be working on some very special weather graphics on NBC Action News in HD the next few days to help describe and clearly show to you what we are thinking.  One thing we pride ourselve on doing is creating these weather graphics to enhance your experience in watching our weathercasts.  It is a goal I have every day.  So, watch closely as this storm approaches.

Get ready for increasing south winds today.  The nice weather has about two more days to go, and then the changes begin.  We may regularly return to our two blogs a day as conditions warrant so check back in later on as we analyze the new data.

Dang it, I just hate when there are no legends to tell how much rain the colors represent. Does that map indicate 4" in most of Eastern KS?

------------

No, it shows close to an inch of rain over most of eastern Kansas with many spots between 1 and 2 inches, but it isn't worth putting on a legend when it is going to change with each model run that comes out.  I will work on getting a legend made later in the week.

Tina - the legend is always the same on these model forecast maps.

Check out this map

The legend is on the left. Next time you see a model forecast map, the legend will be the same, so print this one out and keep it handy.

I'm happy to hear the snow will hold off for awhile. DH will be flying in from Japan on Tuesday and with that kind of jet lag, I hate to think of him driving 45 miles from KCI in sloppy road conditions. Besides, if we get an inch of snow next week, I'll lose the snowflake contest.

How have your thoughts on this storm changed since yesterday?

Also, are you going to inform viewers of the length of the cycle when you give your winter forecast?

ChicagoExPat, you had me going there on your last sentence, and then you clarified it!  I had deciphered it correctly, and you confirmed it.

I just entered my snow date and time in the Snowflake Contest.  It is also in the second week of December.  I picked the date my dog had puppies in 1970 and the time the 4th one was born.  The 5th one was born late that evening after I had thought she was finished.  She had given me a clue she wasn't through because she wouldn't give any of her puppies a meal until the 5th one came.  I just didn't pick up on the clue.  Poor Phoebe, that must have felt like a long day!  How those puppies enjoyed the snow after they were big enough to go out!  See,
this is weather-related!

Uh-oh, Weatherwunder, I hope we didn't pick the same date and have it go down to the wire on the time of day! Speaking of puppies and snow, we got our first guy at 10 weeks of age on my birthday in 1998. In the first week of January 1999, Chicago had its second biggest one day snowfall on record. It was about two feet!  Argh -- Jimmy was still being housetrained!  So we dug a path through the snow around the perimeter of our yard, and he was able to wander around and do his business. Then come springtime when we let him outside off leash, guess what? He kept to the perimeter of the yard because that's the route he was used to.
That saved us a lot of $$ on Invisible Fences....until we got Hallie two years later. Hallie needed that fence!

I am very excited to see snow in Northwest MO even though it doesn't look promising right now.  I have to say, we had our first flurries back on October 10, but you could only see the flurries in the headlights of the truck and a few on the hood...they didn't last long at all.  I don't consider that a real snow event of course, but there were flurries.  I think this was when I-80 was closed down in Nebraska into Wyoming the first or second time of the season.  I hope something develops this winter for our neck of the woods worth talking about.  I know there isn't much interest in Kansas City in our weather up here in the sticks, but I still enjoy reading the blog from you in the "South."  It's amazing the difference between KC weather from ours' here in the Maryville vicinity.  Keep up the good work!!!

what do I think? I think we need some excitement around here. I think we need a storm just like the one that hit us March 28th of last season to hit. man that thing was awesome. we just need more cold air in it this time. the comma head on that was beautiful and couldn't have been placed more perfect. That's what I think.

My Birthday is the third week of December, but I picked my current rat terrier's Birthday on 12/13. He was born in 2000. I remember it being very cold and we had a deep snow a week before Christmas.... 2000 was also same year that my old rattie was accidently killed by my filly on my Birthday. That is main reason why I don't like snow.

I can't believe that my little rattie will be 9 years old this year... I picked him up at 6 weeks old and he was the size of a coke can! Time sure does fly.

My BD is the 3rd week in Dec !
(How many blogger Dec BD's do we have here?)
Maybe it will hit one of us !
But, I cannot remember the last time that it actually snowed on mine. Snow on the ground...yes...but actually snowing...can't say that it ever has.
Heck, it snowed on my husbands BD, the 1st week in April, YEARS ago...BIG fat wet snowflakes....beautiful, and the family was all smiling about it. But he was grumbling, because he had wanted to go fishing ! lol

Rdub,
lol yea, I missed the good snow last year on my bday (Feb 28).  They were only calling for a couple of inches when we left for Daytona, then we are down there and find out it was 7 in.
I am trying to grasp all of these models and its a little difficult.  It is crazy to see big storms show up and then the next day..there's nothing there.  I was looking earlier..if I was even reading it right..and there was what looked like a pretty good snow for us toward the end of the month ( I can't remember how far out I was).  I am sure it will not be there or look totally different tomorrw.  Used to that.

I also have a December birthday, the 17th... w00t!

Now, onto the approaching storm.  I'm awful at predicting winter weather, but my gut tells me we just won't have enough cold air down here on the south side (Olathe) to get any measurable snow.  We might see a few flakes, but I think that's a long shot still.

This is mostly me just speaking from experience, and how often I am disappointed with winter weather (I'm a snow lover).

Lots of people born in december!  Yay!  How neat.  Hailjonathon- I would love it if that type of storm would hit on my bday.  It is the 9th.  I always asked for it to snow on my birhday, that was all I wanted.  Until- my 6th bday (I think) it snowed so much and only one little boy made it to my party.  He walked all the way to my house in the snow!  I am only asking for snow on my birthday again!

IT ALSO LOOKS LIKE SINCE IT GETS CUT OFF FROM ANY
REAL SOURCE OF COLD AIR THAT THE POTENTIAL FOR SNOW IS LESS. CUTTING
CROSS SECTIONS THROUGH THE SYSTEM REVEALS FREEZING LEVELS STAYING
ALOFT. WHILE THE CHANCE OF SNOW ISN`T ZERO IT DOESN`T LOOK FAVORABLE
GIVEN THE LACK OF A COLD AIR TAP INTO THE SYSTEM. AND WITH THE
SYSTEM BECOMING MORE BAROTROPIC DYNAMIC COOLING...THAT WOULD ENABLE
SNOW TO REACH THE GROUND...SEEMS LESS PROBABLE. ADDITIONALLY...ONLY
A FEW MEMBERS OF THE MEDIUM RANGE ENSEMBLE DEPICT SNOW ON THE PLUME

Its still way too early for specifics even at this point, however, the same problem that presents itself now has been the same problem that has persisted since the storm began showing consistency.

There is just not much of cold air to tap into at all.

Time and more model runs will tell the tale. For sure though, this storm seems to be signaling the beginning to what looks to be a very active pattern through the end of the month.

Hello everyone back in the Metro.

Just wanted to report that we had rain last night here in Weiser, Idaho.  I had an interview in Boise and there was snow in the foothills..    The forecast for the next 24 - 36 hours has light rain changing to snow.  They are expecting 2 - 5 inches in the mountains and foothills, and an inch or so here in the valley.

I'll let everyone know Saturday morning if we got any snow or not.    FYI, it has snowed twice, melted on contact...

Have a great weekend...

Also keep in mind that even if there is not enough cold air coming into this storm  it will be strong enough to have its own cold air with it as the dynamics would cool the atmosphere off.

I think you are not considering that normally at this time of the year, storm system dont track that far south as depicted by the gfs. Its not climatically correct for this time of the year. usually cut off lows being displaced from the jet in the southwest always make for huge problems in the models, we wont really know until the storm is on shore..but my gut feeling is that this will end up further north

momof3 and Chicago,
My BD is Dec 19th...so, yep, combo presents :(
And my sister's is New Year's Eve..the 31st....so mine is 6 days before Christmas and hers is 6 days after Christmas. Poor mom and dad..:):)
But sis got to celebrate her BD big time! lol
She is 80 now and still going strong. (there are 5 brothers in between she and I...) But sis was 19 when I was born and was already married and had a 10 month old girl..so I was an aunt before I was born! lol
All 7 of us siblings are all still going strong.
And we ALL love snow, even at this age ! Heck, 2 brothers still live in Alaska, where I grew up ...they cannot tolerate the heat here when they come to visit, so they usually come in the fall/winter....and it is still too warm for their blood ;) ;)...
So bring on the snow Gary !! SNOW DANCE !!!

If we're going to see two or three days of rain with totals of 1-2", how does that meet the criteria for a 'major' storm"  Or is that description subjective?  I'm asking because I've anticipated one or two storms lately that were forecasted as major, and they didn't seem all that major or memorable to me.
